Been ignoring mine for 1-year now I've had five letters through the letterbox and three goon visits at my door , which incidentally I just close the door in their face as soon as they show me their ID to who they are without saying a word that way , like chili John Carney (the KZreadr from Essex) says ,they have no evidence at all to get a warrant to enter your home .

Congratulations, you beat me! I'm hitting 15 years this October. I cancelled my licence following the Ross/Brand Sachsgate phone harassment scandal in 2008. I decided I wasn't going to pay for stupid yobs to torment a much loved national treasure with voicemails about having sex with his grandaughter. May I ask what prompted you to cancel your licence three years earlier?

When Clarkson, May and Hammond left top gear, I realised that there was NOTHING left on terrestrial TV that I'd miss. So I replaced my licence with Amazon prime and Netflix subscriptions, removed my TV aerial cable, connected a cheap media PC up to the TV, and cancelled my licence. That was about 3 or so years ago, but once a month I STILL get an extortion racket letter* from TV licensing, and I treat it like every other piece of junk mail that's begging for charitable donations. If a company sent you a letter falsely stating that you are a liar, a thief, and a cheat, they'd be committing libel. What are the TV licencing letters doing if they're not stating the exact same thing? They're saying the equivalent of "We know you SAY you're not using our service, but we think you're lying, and believe that you're steeling our service without paying. So we're going to insist that you let one of our people into your home to look for any shred of proof that we can use against you. If it turns out that we can't find anything and have to admit that you ARE being truthful, we'll only accept that you're not lying to us for at most a few years before we decide to call you a liar and invade your privacy AGAIN" ! Would anyone accept this behaviour from ANY other company? If you cancelled a magazine subscription, would it be acceptable for the publisher to send threatening letters, and say they're going to send people around to check you're not shoplifting your monthly copy instead? Would doing this routinely to all unsubscribes result in the publishing company losing everything in a storm of lawsuits ? So why should TV licensing get away with it? (* If ANY other company sent out letters worded like the ones TV licencing send out, they'd be in court over it ! They're pretty much saying "Pay up or we'll send the boys round..... And you REALLY wouldn't like THEM turning up unannounced". From any other company, it would be extortion.)

You're obviously competent enough resist tvl tactics, but for those not too sure about their rights: - Addressed to THE LEGAL OCCUPIER is not targeting a person, so they skate round the laws of harrassment etc. No respectable organisation or company, concerned about their reputation and goodwill, would behave in such a disreputable fashion and expect to survive in the market place. The public-facing element of 'bbc tvl' is contracted out to Capita et al, and in doing so BBC distance themselves from the negative, frankly barely legal, practices they engage in. You are left dealing with self-employed, door to door sales persons of the lowest order, passing themselves off as 'inspectors' and 'officers'. RETURN TO SENDER all their mail. DON'T OPEN YOUR DOOR TO STRANGERS.

@ David Cooper - Capita doesn't mail out the threatograms, tvl does. It does cost tvl: every piece of paper, every print run, every envelope, every mail out and mail return. RETURN TO SENDER

@@jonwyatt3694 I believe that you will find that Capita are like Serco who run prisons amongst other thing. TVL is just one of the many things Capita run. So in many ways as far as costs go TV licensing & Capita are one in the same. Our local post man says it will not cost Capita/TV Licensing any thing to have letters returned. Apparently like you or I they don’t need to accept returned post. Our post man has an elderly relative whose eyesight is bad. Her TV broke down & now just listens to the radio. He says she phoned TV licensing. Told them she no longer had a TV/broadband or a smart phone so wouldn’t be watching/recording live TV or iPlayer. She had been paying by direct debit. Her next bank statement showed a refund that had gone in about two working days after her phone call. TV licensing explained that they are required to check that a property is correctly licensed ever couple of years. Our post man says that was about 18 months ago & she has not heard anymore from them. He did also said that everyone in the distribution office gets to know the properties that keep receiving letters from TV Licensing. That they draw their own conclusions about the people living there. Because it seems to upset some people I can’t see why having the option to fund the National Broadcaster is a good idea. Why not take the money out of general tax like they apparently do in Russia.

Well I will not be answering the door they are just bully’s for hire ❤ The best think to do is never answer the door as everything you do they will try to use against you to get you to pay or a warrant to get in your house. My TV has never robbed anyone, ran anyone over, caught fish, lit fireworks, owned a weapon.. anything like that. My TV is pretty innocent and useless tbh, don't think it will get up to much trouble so don't think he'll ever need a license, same goes with my other 5 TV's, they're all very well behaved, they barely move and never even go outside! :)

Why do people in the U.K. have the option to pay or not to fund the National Broadcaster ? In places like Russia the funding comes from general taxation. For some reason having a choice appears to upset people. To my mind. The simplest solution would be to follow Russia’s example.

I am saving up their monthly letters unopened (from Darlington), and maybe in a couple of years time I will send the lot back to them in one go marked "Unsolicited Mail, Return to Sender". In the meantime do NOT talk with them should they visit, just shut the door in their faces.

I love getting these letters! I have an incinerator in my garden and I never have anything to light it with, thankfully, TV licensing send me weekly fire lighting letters for me to have my little fire going! THANKS BBC! You saved me a fortune on fire lighters and wasted a ton of your own money in the process!

It’s just yet another tax.

Cost of a 2nd class basic letter 75p. Printing costs, envelope, call it £1 per letter. Sent out across the country, thousands a day. The BBC is responsibly spending licence-tax money 😅

Haven't watched TV for at least 5 years but finally had the courage to cancel my license a couple of days ago and it was the best feeling ever!

If I had my way, I'd ask everybody in the UK, to not pay the license fee. TV is boring ,same people day in day out guesting on each other's programs. TV whether BBC, ITV C4, it's all rubbish and that's why I don't watch it. Ant + Dec, Holly + Phil people like this are getting richer doing the same old crap and now we have as beens advertising postcode lottery, they're all looking after themselves while we the payers struggle. Withdraw their implied right of access to your address( they have a form online ) The only way they can then get near your house is with a Warrant , but if they can’t approach your address they will not be able to gather evidence sufficient enough to obtain a warrant .

Stopped paying it 5 years ago, never heard anything from them.

all you need to do it call them, I have been getting an exemption letter from them for years, just call them and tell them you don’t watch live Tv, if they ask if you have a capable device just reply, I have kitchen knives but haven’t committed an offence, your point is…. Just call them

no.. not always.. i had to phone them up and tell them to delete my details after 10 months of a 'no lisence needed' declaration.. because they sent 4 threat-o-grams.. even after i got a rebate.. been bombarded with threat-o-grams to legal occupier since.. but i am aware of my rights on this.. so have zero fear

This is nothing new and nothing to worry about, I’ve been getting threatening letters for years and they’ve only visited once and I didn’t answer the door, he soon left.

Bin it. I haven't had one for 12 yrs now. I don't believe in paying for something I don't use. Shame we can't knock the police of the council tax bill. When u need them after being burgled, they don't turn up. But a company tells them someones using a dangerous camera. And they're out with emergency lights. 👍

It is a licence either to watch or own a tv depending on which European country to live in, E.G a licence is required to watch live broadcasts in the UK or in Ireland a licence is required to own a TV, in Germany you need a TV licence even if you do not own a TV.

If you genuinely don't need a license, just ring the number and tell them, they will stop sending letters. Easy really...😅

Communications Act 2003, Section 363 (1)A television receiver must not be installed or used unless the installation and use of the receiver is authorised by a licence under this Part. (2)A person who installs or uses a television receiver in contravention of subsection (1) is guilty of an offence. So if you break point 1, you're guilty of an offence, so how do you NOT need a TV licence? I've been looking for answers on multiple channels but no one answers.
