Tutorial: Transferring Citadel paints into dropper bottles

When I first showed some Citadel paints in dropper bottles on my blog about a year ago I got a lot of questions how I did it. Well here's the process caught on camera :)

    I did the same thing with the older GW paints. Had to water them down in their container before transferring so that the transferring flows more predictably. I did top up a little more with water to keep them flowing nicer. Use a wet brush to get the last bit of paint out. An then use a heat gun to remove the older papery stickers. I did end up using clear tape over top of them as their glue was done and kept curling off.

    You can buy bottles and staninless steel funnels for decanting paint into them online. I will get some vallejo thinner for my citadel paints as well.

    I did a similar thing with mine! Some differences: I poured mine in by hand, and then blue-taced the pot to a deodorant can and used small funnels to let all the paint pour in without my arm getting tired, and you can do 4 at once. I used a glass bead as an agitator, and used a scalpel to remove the label, reducing finger contact! I much prefer the dropper bottles, however I have about 5 1mm wire uncloggers lying around, and with metallic paints, the bottles need to be shaken from side to side before being shaken up and down, otherwise the medium will get stuck in the top and all you pour out is a the medium without any pigment in it! Also, when working in warm conditions, the air inside the bottle expands when it gets warm, so if you shake and then open, the pressure will result in a volcano effect on the paint, which is annoying, but solved by opening and unclogging before shaking

    Thank you for your comment! Yes the volcano effect is something I am familiar with also. Might try to open the bottle before shaking next time, thanks for that tip!

    I personally hate the small pot design Citadel uses. Paint gets dry too soon...especially with someone like me who has periods of paint-inactivity due to other commitments. I loved the original pots Citadel made back around 2nd edition 40k (when I joined the hobby). I still have two pots from that old product line, hardly ever used them...but when I do, they are still just as smooth as if they were opened for the first time. THAT is a quality container! Will transfer the new paints to drops. Thanks!

    Just wondering, would it possibly be more effective to use matte medium to do this? It won't thin down the paint pigment if you do mix it up, that's all?

    A lot less mess if you take the lid off first. I definitely recommend just using a funnel. If anything, use your blue tac to hold the bottom bottle down, put the funnel in it, and upend the citadel pot on top. Let it pour on its own while you do other things.

    Another note (to add to many) for those looking to transfer for the purpose of fitting citadel paints in paint cases designed for Vallejo/Essential ooil/Dropper bottles. Many sizes of dropper bottles are in markets like Amazon. 15ml, 20ml, 30ml and so on. While all three of these sizes will work 15ml is pretty small and as long as you add no water or thinner will fit the paint from one citadel pot, but without much room... Also the 15ml bottles are a little loose in the case slots. On the other end 30ml is great because you can fit the paint and some thinner or water to help get more out of the original pot but most the 30ml droppers have the same diameter as a citidel pot, meaning they will jam into the case slots barely, but any more than 3-4 next to each other will rip or tear the foam. Trust me, it sucks. The magic bottle I found was 20ml. Fits like a glove, and fits the paint + just enough thinner to get the majority of paint out of original pot. Dont be me and first buy 30ml bottles (as is recommended in most videos on youtube; because they just want dropper bottles and not to fit them in case slots!), take the time to start transferring paint only to realize the bottles are the same diameter and no help in the end goal. Then buy 15ml bottles and move the paint once again only to realize now you cant fit it all in one bottle due to the thinner used to get it all out of the pot the first time! Then to buy a third batch of bottles (20ml) just to feel like you didnt just waste $25 and a week playing tag with amazon orders and paint bottle transfers just to end up with extra unlabeled bottles with only 5-10ml of paint in them. Just go with the 20ml and save the time and money I wasted.

    I did this, added 2x oval shaped glass beads for each bottle, but when the thicker paints(like the metallic) separate, I can't shake them. I tried "rolling" the bottle and spinning them but none of the above works. Does anyone have any ideas? I do not own a paint shaker or jigsaw. All I have is a drill.

    Why do you think it was that gw didn't switch to the dropper bottles when they made the new paint range?

  • @samb7088

    @samb7088

    9 жыл бұрын

    sunsofruss I personally think its because they way the pots do when you open them and use them. The paint will run up into the lid where the pot is supposed to seal and keeps it from forming an air tight seal. That air getting in makes it dry up and if it dries up you gotta run to the store and buy up more of their paint. Do like me and avoid this by using the end of your file or something kinda pointed and dig out the paint thats gathered in the top of the lid. It will make your paint last much longer and saves money. I personally like GW paints but I dislike the design of the stupid pots. Im in the process of putting all of mine in dropper bottles which also makes the paint last longer. I just wish the paint didnt cost so damn much for the little that comes in a pot.

  • @ShastaHawk

    @ShastaHawk

    Pure greed. Everyone knows that paint in dropper bottles last longer yet GW keeps selling their paints in the tub so more money is spent on them in the long run.

  • @TheDamit84

    @TheDamit84

    Leaving greed out of the picture, I think those paint pots are designed for very very early beginners. You can just open it and straight paint from the pot without the use of a palette. I think it's a shame to not give us dropper bottles, because even Duncan in his tutorials always uses a palette and thins his paints. Don't get me wrong, I really like the standard GW color palette but having these little pots made me ponder every time i have to restock not to buy GW.

    Just a piece of advice, you should use something other than a metal nut to act as a paint agitator. The water in the paint will eventually (very quickly, actually) cause the nut to rust which can alter the chemical balance of the paint and eventually ruin it. I use beads made from volcanic rock because they're chemically inert and natural, so there's no risk of them seeping chemicals into the paint or rusting.

  • @Alamaric

    @Alamaric

    5 жыл бұрын

    USe a stainless steel nail polish agitator. you can find them on Amazon for $9 for 300. Stainless steel does not rust or tarnish.

  • @violetvulpine5356

    @violetvulpine5356

    @@Alamaric Stainless steel can rust and tarnish. The higher the level of chromium the less likely it will occur but it does happen. Stainless steel is not rust/tarnish proof it is more rust/tarnish resistant than normal steel. Although they are good to use if you use the paint in a short time for the price.

  • @Alamaric

    @Alamaric

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@violetvulpine5356 I do not get what you are going for other than to try and up-show. Under normal water-based atmospheric conditions, stainless steel does not rust or tarnish. It will corrode and rust away under harsh conditions towards specific elements in the stainless steel or if pitted, damaged, etc.. HOWEVER since we are talking about acrylic paint which is water-based and we are talking about specific agitator balls designed to be in that kind of liquid, it will not rust or tarnish. So what was your point other than to see if your brain-pan was larger? Context in which a specific thing being used is important and the poster is using it stir acrylic paint, not sulfuric acid or a strong base.

    The problem with Vallejo is finding stores that carry them and that keep them in stock. I wanted to use Vallejo but after looking at the prices for Vallejo on the likes of Amazon there is no way I am paying $7 a bottle for Vallejo. So until someplace like Amazon carry Vallejo at MSRP I will have to stick with Citadel.
