I'd seen this video when it came out, but now that poorhammer is berating me into possibly buying one, I'm back at it again after they reminded me of it

Imagine all your thoughts, starting a new hobby. Countless hours of watching videos. Just to stumble across this gem, and all your questions being answered

@@michaelpeila8794 I'm not trolling, I'm leaving a negative comment. The video was terrible. There was some decent information in it, but the presentation wasn't good and he stuck a commercial right in the middle of it and then said at the end of it that he doesn't have sponsors!!!!!!!!

So many people discuss how to use an airbrush, YOU SHOW PEOPLE HOW THEY WORK, this is a huge difference, and as a visual learner, this is so helpful, thank you

@@EDYKILLS Aaaaand that's my problem with the concept of "visual learners", because it implies that some people are not visual learners. Everyone is a "visual learner". What people mean when they say "thank you for making this easy to understand for visual learners like me!" is "Wow, you're pretty good at explaining things to a general audience. I learned something today, which I am not used to doing, because people are generally sh**t at explaining things properly" The idea that you, or someone else, are a "visual learner" was a lie told to you by your teachers as a way for them to excuse their sh**tty teaching skills.

In 1981 i started airbrushing t-shirts while in college, i was a totally slow beginner. One day a local young airbrush artist worked with me at the tourist shop in panama city beach florida. A young girl came and and asked if we could airbrush a photo of jim morrison onto a t-shirt, she had a round button about the size of a quarter with morrison's photo on it . He was just filling in for our friend so he looked at me and said ''You wanna do this ?'' I said no way, i was way too slow and awkward with airbrush to try that for a paying customer. He took it from her and told her ''come back in 45 minutes''. She smiled and ran off. For the next 45 minutes i watched Wes Hardin freehand airbrush a large portrait of Jim Morrison onto a t-shirt and i was in awe of his speed and talent. Back then the local guys had a policy ''No penciling, no laying out any lines except with freehand airbrush'' They didn't even allow pencils to be in the airbrush booth lol. Young guys then were into challenging themselves. I've never seen an artist do something that amazing since, literally in 45 minutes it was complete and looked not only accurate but had feeling and emotion to it and was absolutely beautiful , he'd made the hair fade out off to the sides of the shirt, it was something to see. Wes had been airbrushing for a few years and he'd tired of portraits, i think that day he wanted to show off for me. When she picked it up her mouth dropped open with amazement. She was as happy as she could be. Little did she know she'd gotten a piece of fine art that spring day, and my understanding of airbrush was never the same

How's your journey?

Am a spray painter by trade. A cheapy face mask is fine for acrylics BUT the harmful (cancer causing/liver killing) compounds in solvent based paints are readily absorbed through your eyes and skin. Respirator + gloves don't really cut it. So.. Scott's wife if you're reading, you know what to do!

Speaking as a comparatively new airbrusher, the method Scott demonstrates for cleaning, by cleaning the cup into a container *before* you spray cleaner *through* the airbrush, was a revelation for me. It makes cleaning so much quicker and easier, and my hesitation to use the airbrush much because of the labor involved in cleaning between colors has been drastically reduced!

I'd wear that airbrush trouble shooting flow chart on a t-shirt. It's basically what I'm going to talk about to anyone who says "hi" to me anyway.

SUPREMLY helpful!! OUTSTANDING!! A part-time mini-painter for 50 years, I steered away from air brushing after deep frustrations with my early attempts. This video, especially when added to your "after 1 year of air brushing" video, are the most thorough, concise, easy to understand, directly applicable introductions to effective, non-frustrating air brush use (plus just watching you paint) that I've ever seen. As a one time tech-writer by trade, I'd also like to say that your approach to technical instruction is outstanding. My decision to use or not use an air-brush and how I'd approach it now feel SO much better informed. Thank you so much. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

Well done, a very well produced video, concise but giving me all the information I need. I'm not even into modelling but just bought a cheap airbrush II already have air in my workshop)for painting fishing lures, and I only do that in a pretty basic manner. Great job, sir. Best airbrushing video tutorials I have found and viewed. I am a complete airbrush noob, but inclined to all of the technical aspects of any tool I use and how they work, including strengths and weaknesses, pros and cons. I am getting back into scale aircraft modeling after a 40-year hiatus, and, being 57, have less patience for errors and mistakes. Subscribed! I just got an airbrush for scale models (mostly Star Trek) and used it for the first time a few days ago. I then realized I need more education and found this video after some how-to searches on KZread. I've watched a number of them, but this is the one every one should watch. Your diagram and explanation of what's going on in there when you pull the trigger is what most tutorials gloss over but its the kind of detail I needed. Well done!

I appretere this video for it's informative content and approachable stucture well suited for absolute beginners and novice airbrushers - this is what I could not find when I started early this year.

I couldn't find good beginner airbrush videos early last year when I bought my own airbrush, so it's just been sitting in my tool closet. Looked up videos again today and THIS. This is excellent. THANK YOU. I like the explanation of how the tool works, too. Very helpful.

First time here, your approach to training and helping first timers to understand the basics of this awesome hobby, is fantastic. I wish I had a Miniac for every new thing I need or want to learn in life. Cheers man.

Scott, solid vid! Best I've seen on the subject. One suggestion? We clear our paint cups the same way, but I use a sciency "wash bottle". It floods the cup, ensuring those pesky dried bits and pieces are washed out. Thanks for the info and entertainment. Digging the podcast too!

Love your videos but as a airbrush salesperson and instructor of 26 years, I have the say the larger the nossle/needle +quality of the airbrush are the most important factors for someone new to airbrushing. A 0.5 nossle size makes for less clogs= more likely someone new to airbrushing wont get fustrated and give up on airbrushing.

I build 1/12 & 1/6 scale dioramas, and have come to the conclusion that airbrushing would save me time, and heighten the level of my graffiti on each project. Only so much I can do with brushes and markers. That said, of all the “airbrush for beginners” videos I’ve watch on KZread, this one has, by far, been the most helpful and beneficial. The fact that you broke down basic mechanics and even threw up a graph on how to avoid speckling and spiderwebbing was the $#!T! So, thanks. &☮️

Totally getting a 'Good Eats' vibe during the fluid dynamics explanation.

I've been using an airbrush with an air filter, with a quality sensor in it in the room for a few months. By doing this I've learnt one important thing, once you've finished airbrushing the air quality in the room stays really bad for something like 45-60 minutes after I finish. I've taken to leaving my face mask on while I clean up after I've finished.

@@AsheramK I also noticed that if you just have an external window or door open in the room the air quality doesn't get AS bad, and it gets better quicker once you've finished. It's obvious, but some people seem to think having a window open on the other side of the room is pointless unless there is something blowing the air out.

You really shouldn't be airbrushing in your home unless you're using some kind of air extractor or airbrush booth. Paint particles including acrylics are seriously bad for you.

Started using an airbrush with a cheapo airbrush last summer and was looking for a video like this. Now I'm finally getting a sotar, and this is the exact video I needed to watch. Nice vid, by the way. I always love checking out other people's take on the fundamentals. I'm a scale modeler who also enjoys the occasional miniature. I just subscribed. Looking forward to watching more.

I'll tell you guys the single biggest and most frustrating problem I had starting airbrushing and the solution - I was experiencing constant clogging. It felt like I couldn't even get through a half hour painting session without experiencing a clog, much less a big batch of troops without having to stop and thoroughly clean the airbrush several times. The longer the painting session, the worse it got. One of the effects of this was that I thought I was mixing my paint to thick so I ended up over thinning, causing even more problems, bit still did not fixing the clogging issue. The culprit turned out to be the cheap disposable pipe cleaners you can get at virtually any store. They shed tiny nearly transparent fibers which would inevitably work their way into the paint and clog up the tip. Stopping to clean the airbrush in the middle of a painting session would just make the problem *worse* as it would deposit more fibers into the airbrush. If you're using the disposable pipe cleaners, I suggest you switch to a mix of the reusable nylon type pipe cleaners and interdental brushes. I cannot stress enough how big of a change this small thing was for me. It took airbrushing from the realm of a being a massive headache to something I really enjoy doing. I recently did an art project where spent nearly every free hour I had for two weeks straight with a combination of four different airbrushes where I was honestly pretty terrible about keeping them clean and I had exactly zero clogs. On a related note, I would also advise you don't use paint brushes that like to shed bristles or are otherwise decaying to mix your paint and don't use paper towels to clean the tip either.

I've only ever started with paint in my cup and have only mixed my paints in the cup. I don't generally think this as a bad practice, if your not mindful this method can clog a brush. BUT, I always make sure that I have thinner in the cup before initial paint as well as add thinner before introducing more paints for the highlights.

Super useful video! Especially for me, since I started airbrushing less than a month ago and I am having some of the problems with pressure-dilution-distance. You helped me figure out why some of them happen. Also I am using Vallejo Flow Improver instead of the Thinner...have you tried that? Is there a significant difference between the two products?

The thinner dilutes the paint and makes it easier to achieve a smooth airbrush performance. A flow improver extends the drying time of the paint and prevents dried paint on the needle tip. A flow improver is a synthetic oil.
