Tutorial & Solo Playthrough of Earth - Solo Board Game

Ойындар

In this video, I play the solo mode of Earth by Maxime Tardif and published by Inside Up Games. Earth is an engine and tableau building game. In the solo mode, you compete against the AI, Gaia, to develop the Island with the best flora, fauna, and ecosystems.

    I really enjoy earth. Normally tableau builders can be stressful because every card you discard or miss out on feels like a wasted opportunity, but because of the often blind composting and the massive stack of cards it feels like there are limitless equally good options. That on top of the gimmicky tactile nature of the trunk/canopy and the vibrant art makes this one of my favourite relaxing games.

    Thanks for this, I simply can’t make rule books go into my head without your videos. Watched this one before playing, and now again after Gaia trounced me 130 to 113…. (beginner mode) am convincing myself I gave her too much compost! 😂. And I refuse to give HER sprouts for multi coloured cards! Your tips are great - like using dice to count HER sprouts (the names I have been calling mother earth while playing this game are not to be repeated).

    Thanks again for sharing. Just a newbie, but I think a score near or over 200 for a solo game is great. I just played my 2nd solo game and scored 208, but I played as beginner and skipped 4 of Gaia's turns. It may be the newness factor, but I'm enjoying it a lot so far. It is definitely card dependent, but I'm able to get a look at more cards than in a game of Terraforming Mars or Ark Nova and I like seeing a lot of cards. That obviously helps mitigate bad card draws. My game was pretty neat in that I had a lot of both sprouts and canopy which helped in scoring the Ecosystem cards in play. Definitely a - 'many paths to victory' kinda game. Going to be fun refining tactics and strategy.

    Yeah, all my plays have been enjoyable for me. I have a video on modifying the Terraforming Mars draft for solo mode that may help 😁. I still have yet to play Ark Nova, but look forward to it. I'm glad you enjoy Earth. I should have my review out in a week or two.

    Haven't played ark nova solo yet, but this earth looks quite nice in solo. The main issue I might see at first might would be the quite long scoring. But all in all, once you get used to iconography and rules like you do, the pacing and length seems quite fast. With Power Plants, and After us coming soon into my collection so I can try those both... My wallet is watching me, with that afraid look as he knows earth might be the third one... And then there's Revive which looks promising, even it's only a basic scoring system in solo... Good job on those solo playthroughs. Always welcome and appreciated! Keep it up ! Cheers from Belgium

    Thank you so much for your kind words. I agree that the scoring in Earth can be long. There is a good feeling when you tally that score at the end of the game, but unfortunately you have no idea where you stand until then. You'll have to let me know what you think of After Us. I am trying to obtain a review copy, but chances are slim. I absolutely love the look of it. I love Revive, even with the scoring mode. I probably will actually develop some goal cards for a win condition on top of scoring. Oh, and I have yet to play Ark Nova. 😆 Maybe I'll get it to the table soon. Thanks again for watching!

    @@tabletopforone Hello, thanks ;) I hope you'll find a review copy of After Us. I don't really know what to expect from it, but i read that the solo mode (wich is a rush against an IA - 1st to reach 80pts win) is good. I'll surely let you know what i think of it after a few plays. (same with power plants) Speak of After us, I was a bit cooled down by the Tribes of the wind wich was really nice and have a nice feeling once played, but the scoring mechanics were a bit off for me. The main issue we had was that the game was a racing game but none of the mechanics there gave us the need for rushing, as the game was quite relaxing. So i hope After us will do better there. And why am i speaking of Tribes of the wind then ? Well coz it's Vincent Dutrait that draw both of those games :D Speaking of vincent dutrait, have you tried HEAT in Solo ? I quite really love what they've designed on the IA system ! So if you ever design some little objectives for Revive ! let me know ! Recently i really enjoyed the solo (and 2 players aswell) from "Guild of merchant explorers" And i'm speaking about it coz, the basic scoring (multi players and solo) is just a classic scoring. BUT You actually have to succeed the 3 objectives card in order to be allowed calculating your score. It's simple, yet very effective giving you a better feeling and goal instead of just a beat your own score with a table at the end of the rulebook saying "Between 100 - 120 : not bad for a start, i'm sure you'll do better next time !" I really found this little simple twist, quite nice. By the way that game (guild of merchant explorers) quickly became one of my favorite "COMFORT solo game" (just next to cascadia) And last but not least, i sometimes like the idea about you don't know if you're doing any good compare to the IA and discover that at the end of the game, analysing where you did good or could have done better ! So, yeah... As i loved traveling and hiking in new zealand, iceland and the likes, those nice pictures from Earth are going to certainly makes me buying it just to try it ! And that's it for me ! Sorry for the looong talk ! Glad speaking with a solo pationate ! If you ever speak french someday, here are one of our little French speaking youtube channel ! This one is more about gameboard and also videogames (like diablo 4 recently) But i got 3, 4 videos to come out in the next coming weeks. www.youtube.com/@latanieredesjcetv9226/videos Cheers from belgium !

    I am definitely eager to hear your thoughts on After Us. I love Vincent Dutrait...I'm near positive he illustrated Atlantis Rising too (and others I own). I like races against the AI (Rocketmen comes to mind), so I do look forward to this one. I have not played Heat, nor do I own it. I'm honestly not sure if I want it. I am so glad you and so many others enjoy it. I just don't know if it is a game for me. I may just get it for the channel, as I think the audience would like to see it. Guild of Merchant Explorers is on my wishlist. I'm hoping to get it for my birthday in a couple months. I love the look of it. The fact that you enjoy it so much does make me confident I will as well. That scoring mode sounds like Honey Buzz and The Pursuit of Happiness, and I happen to like that addition to beat-your-own-score games. Thanks as always for chatting with me here. I enjoy our talks.

    @@tabletopforone Thanks ! ;) Heat is defenatly a strong themed game, wich, not everyone will like, car racing is not specially my stuff even if i liked those game on my computer and console when i was younger, i'm not a motorcycle addict at all, and if i could live without a car and just with a bicycle and a horse i would be more than happy ! ^^ But i really enjoy Heat as a solo and multiplayer experience. It can be though thus, a bad luck might make your car to spin and get a bit behind, but i experienced some games where i was way back, then manage my hand pretty well while my opponant get some bad ressource managment turns, and then i reach the podium and sometimes the 1st place. And the IA, is a master piece of simplicity ! Easy to manage, fast, and smooth ! Just a pure beauty of design :D And what i like in that game is the really strong feeling of living a race. I can't wait the day when they'll release an expansion bringing 2 more car and (hopefully) 1 more double sided Track board. it would make 6 tracks to make a championship on it, with 7 cars in solo mode, would be an amazing experience 'im sure ! But yeah, we can't all like those strong theme and having all the games in the world :) Maybe you can find some review copy or someone nearby your place to share it with you ? About The Guild of merchant explorers, i didn't expect to love it that much, it is really what some players calls a "Comfort Game" ! Really satisfying gameplay, simple, smooth and the 3 advanced cards you're unlocking while you play are great fun ! As you said that little "you must complete the 3 objectives to be able to score" is really simple, yet add that little layer making it better than a simple scoring. I hope you'll like it. And i'm glad someone else like the artwork from that game ! All my friends found it horrible ! were i, in fact, really like it ! A bit of an old school with sober tones ! And puting cubes on the map to explore a bit further every turn is really enjoyable ! Yeah, i wish you'll have it and like it :) You just have to see it as a really light game, to be played while you're tired, before going to sleep ! some of those games to "cool down !" works great on me ;) Cheers ! Really enjoying the talks aswell Take care of yourself and yours

    It's actually a different symbol marked for the beginner setup on page two in the little spreadsheet with beginner, standard, and advanced modes. In the solo rules on page 15, the second paragraph says, "Begin by setting up the game as you would for a regular or advanced game..." As far as I know, that line is referring to the modes listed on page 2. I apologize if I did not explain that in the video.

    Great playthrough! I was wondering if you made an error at 27:34 by not playing another turn before flipping another card for Gaia? Edit: I assume that since you play on Medium that's not the case. I was a little confused because I thought of beginner and medium as one level since they use the top actions from the board but they are different difficulty levels when it comes to AI cards.

  • @tabletopforone

    @tabletopforone

    Thank you very much! That is correct, I was playing medium difficulty which meant top actions but no extra turn on Gaia objective cards. The difficulties and how they work are perhaps not as clear as they out to be in the rulebook. Hey, it's possible I'm wrong lol. Either way, great question and I'm glad you enjoyed the playthrough.

    It is my understanding of the rules that you must run the colored abilities on the cards in order left to right bottom to top. Starting with your player board. I noticed you ran the tableau first then the board. Is my understanding wrong?
