Totally agree with you Nick! I tried to go really slowly and repeat several important concepts in this video in the hopes of helping beginners absorb some of these rules. I also tried to keep this video focused on the core rules. One thing I like about Mage Knight is you can kind of ignore the details for Mage Towers or whatever until you are ready to encounter them. I really hope the video helps people who are struggling with the game. It is so fantastic. Thank you, Boardgametherapist!

Thanks for that compliment, Valen-D. I appreciate that. I'm very much an amateur at filming and editing, so it is probably taking me even more time than it should. Definitely a ton of work, but I'm really trying to make videos that express what I feel when I play board games. I want to grow the hobby and help people find games that they will love and that takes a lot of work. It is nice to know that you appreciate the effort. @@jacobpad Yes, I have been planning to make more MK videos and things have slipped through the cracks a bit. MK videos are hard to film and edit using my style. This channel is a hobby that I do in my spare time, so it takes weeks to finish one. I just haven't had the time. But full game MK playthrough will happen this year. Thanks!

Mage Knight got me into solo board gaming. Never get sick of playing it.

You are the best! My collection will grow exponentially due to your reviews)) I was kinda interested and afraid of this game. I really like the Heroes 3 and this game reminds me of it but I know that not any of my friends will play it with me because of the game weight or because it is not localised into my language. So it is only a solo game for me and it looks too heavy for my solo experience. But looking at your playthrough it was really fun! I cannot wait to see more and maybe I will be engaged to the point I buy and try it myself! Thank you for the experience you give us every time!

Sorry for the delay in responding. I was on vacation. It is definitely heavy, but in a great way. You can ignore most of the rules until the situation presents itself. Most of the time you are pondering how to use your cards and mana to best effect. That puzzle is wonderful and you get to do it again and again. It can be long, especially if you are like me and AP every turn, but with a solo game I don't mind that as much. Hope you enjoy the next Mage Knight video. Thanks!

Question- at 33:30 you’re talking about the resistance break skill. Was that done correctly? Should the armour be reduced, then the resistance is added- so armour of 3 would go down to 2, then with physical resistance you need a 4? Or is it really 5 like you’ve said here?

I interpreted it the way you did. I think it would bring the armor to 2, so you would need 4 physical damage, not 5

Came to ask the same question. I didn't consult BGG, but I'm pretty darn sure the armor would go to 2, and would therefore need 4 physical attack (not 5). On that same note, I believe you could even use ice attack 2 (or fire) at that point to kill it.

Great video! Although for First Reconnaissance, I don’t think you add a card to the dummy between rounds based on the spell mana. I think that’s added in the full walkthrough.

Just in case anyone else had this problem: At around 2:54 he says "For this tutorial scenario, we only need to use numbers 65 to 80. Remove cards 81 through 92..." My standard edition copy of mage knight came with 28 Advanced Action cards numbered 1 through 28. NOT 65 and beyond. Even my game walkthrough book that came with the game says the words "65 through 80." I searched high and low to figure this out thinking maybe I have bad cards or something. But thankfully at 3:01 he includes a picture of the cards that would be numbered "81 through 92." If you are in my situation, THE REAL ADVANCED ACTION CARD NUMBERS TO REMOVE ARE 17 - 28!!! I guess the seller included a Ultimate edition mage knight manual instead of the standard edition version. 3:14 SIMILARLY SPELL CARDS 109 through 112 are actually numbered 17-20!!!

This would be a tough one to grasp as a kid! When I was a kid the most complex game I had was Axis and Allies. At the time it felt like the most epic and strategic thing possible. Ha. Wow things have changed. Thanks for checking out the video!

Best Video on the Rules!! At 33:16 youre talking about Resistance Break. I have a question about it: I thought I would need to get 4 Attack to kill the monster in the Example. 3 Armor + physical Resistance. Lowered to 2 Armor and Physical Resistance. So 4 physical Attack needed. You described it like this: 3 Resistance meaning 6 Attack needed, minus 1, so 5 Attack needed. Wich one is correct? Thx for any answer.

I have been enjoying watching all of your videos. Have you tried the Mage Knight campaign? It’s a fan made campaign on BGG and it is fantastic. Takes this game up to an 11.

That is definitely a good thing to learn. The full game is so much more as well, it is not for everyone. It is like spicy food. Everyone has a different point where the heat stops tasting good and is just adding pain. Thanks for watching!

It is an enormous undertaking considering my editing style. I haven't had the time to tackle it yet, but I will. Fortunately, there's no shortage of Mage Knight videos out there. But it might need to be multiple videos, like Frostpunk or Halls of Hegra. I used to do that all the time. Now I try to fit it all in one video, but we'll see. Thanks for watching!

I'm so happy I've finally played it enough to get hooked. Vlaada was already my favorite board game designer and now he is untouchable. What a collection of games: Thru the Ages, Mage Knight, Galaxy Trucker, Dungeon Petz, Tash Kalar, Codenames, Space Alert...holy moly! Guy is a genius. It is a shame he has been quiet for so long. Great video thank you! This has inspired me to get my unopened mage knight to the table this week. One quick question.. do you have a table cover or something? It looks really easy and satisfying to pick up cards, rather than scratching around on wood or plastic haha. Appreciate if you could help me find similar! Thank you.

I personally like it very much and recommend it. Good luck with Mage Knight! I plan to make a video playthrough for the entire solo conquest here in a month or two. can you use range and siege in ancient ruins?

Maybe a stupid question but I don't have the game and I'm just getting familiar with the rules by watching videos: I'm wondering what if you use the green crystal on 'Concentration' card? Would you get the 4 movement from 'March' + 2, so six movement from that single card?

For the advanced cards how do we know which are 65-80? Only marking I see is the lower right card count. Thanks

At 43:07 when they move into the mines, why doesn't the enemy attack them? My understanding was that if you are adjacent to an enemy and move to a space adjacent to an enemy, they will attack you.

43:15 You still get the benefit of the Foresters even though there is a symbol on it? Is that because you originally used it to "Move 2 + the benefits"? Or even if you had used Block 3? Is that power "always on"?

I explain it at 37:00. I used it for the top ability which includes reduced move cost for all movement for the entire turn. The block is a different ability. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

43:15 shouldn't you be attacked by swordsmen? since you moved from adjacent hex to another adjacent hex. or does it apply only to orcs? also thanks for the vid. i think it's the fastest way to learn the rules - by doing :D

Hello Shagi 🙂 Been a while but still not feeling well. Most gaming is done sitting in my armchair, but I can see so many new boxes on the dining table that it is frustrating me 😣 Anyway, managed Shifting Stones on a tray...good puzzler (along with the usual IQ Smart puzxlers...keep my little grey cells working 😅 Do you know that I have Mage Knight since it first came out and found it rather convoluted so once I can hobble to the table I will rely on your tutorial...All the others failed ! Thank you so much Shagie. Mage Knight never really made any sense even watching so many videos "demonstrating" how to play it ! I simply put the box back on the shelf 😊 But having watched your video and the calm way you describe everything, it will certainly make it worthwhile to bring it to the table at some later date....using your tutorial ofcourss. Guess what Shagie ? Managed to buy Titanic 😊 I can see it from here 😣 However, Maquis and Black Sonata are not available; the latter is but in Italian ! I would love Maquis since you made it look so good....just like all the other games you play. Again,with great respect I send you Kind Regards.

Can i ask some question. Can i end move without spend all move point. For example i get 4 move points from card so i decide to move just 2 point to village and interact.

I am a little confused with the setup you mention to remove cards 81 through 92 but i don't see that anywhere in the rulebook i have.For Solo i remove 109 to 112.I looked at the first reconnaissance on page 18 and i follow solo rules page 19 of the rulebook

If I remember correctly -- and someone please correct me if I am wrong -- that is one of those "for your first game" instructions in order to reduce the complexity as you learn. I don't have the rulebook in front of me at the moment to confirm this. You can totally ignore that and include all the cards. It won't affect anything. Thanks for watching!

Something that I wasn't clear about and I couldn't see mentioned here is what enemy units you use in the starting scenario and beyond. I brought mage knight ultimate edition and the enemy units from the expansions are quite complicated and powerful in conjunction with the starting scenario. Mage knight does a really bad job of explaining how to set up these initial starting scenarios as solo campaigns and certainly doesn't discuss this particular aspect of play. I really want to get into this game, but this aspect of play is somewhat intimidating and creates a very steep learning curve. Any idea whether you are meant to include all the enemy units or was the starting scenario only meant to be played with the base game units?

This is the Ultimate Edition. I thought the numbering was consistent through the different versions but I guess not. Perhaps your version of the rulebook explains which numbered cards to remove and which to keep? I don't have any other version of the game, so I'm not sure how to check. Sorry.

No bother at all. I'm currently on a mini vacation close to home. This summer hasn't been very productive. August looks crazy busy. My guess is it comes out late September. I was hoping for sooner, but I don't think I'll have the time.
