Tutorial: ripping textures and 3D models from Playstation 2 games (part 2: models)

Ойындар

Tutorial: how to extract textures and 3D models from Playstation 2 games (part 2: extracting models, fixing problems and refining/smoothing, applying textures to the model). Tutorial in English.
his tutorial is split in two parts (two videos, one video for each part). In the first part I have shown how to extract the textures from PS2 games, in this second part I show how to extract the 3D models.
Things that you will learn in this tutorial:
1) Extract models from PS2 games using PCSX2
2) Fixing critical problems of distortion in the 3D models (PCSX2 model converter)
3) Moving and placing the gismo/pivot (XYZ arrows), remove undesired models (clean up the target model)
4) Resize and move the model, fix problems with the orientation of faces in the model (normals) and resize the normals indicator.
5) Refine or smooth the model (auto smooth)
6) Split the model in multiple objects to apply the textures for each matching object
7) Fixing remaining distortion problems in the model using a skew modifier
Software required:
- PCSX2 (v0.9.8): pcsx2.net/download/category/34...
- PCSX2 Model Converter: www.mediafire.com/file/t5exm9j...

After months of searching for a more efficient answer, five years after this was posted, it's a shame this is still the best answer we have. But, since it's the best answer we have (and since months of digging around trying to figure out better options has made me exponentially more familiar with all these game ripping apps and blender and whatnot) I am super appreciative that we at least have this option. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this and the previous tutorial on how to use this method to extract ps2 models!! I was able to successfully get models from Magna Carta: Tears of Blood, Clock Tower 3 and Rule of Rose so far using this process. Never thought someone like me would be able to but you presented the process in such a clear and instructive way that I was able to follow along just fine. So thank you again for sharing, I'm extremely grateful. ❤

  • @dariendark7263

    @dariendark7263

    8 ай бұрын

It would require a complete reverse engineering of the original game code. At that point, you theoretically could extract the fully rigged and textured model. However. You have to keep in mind. If you then attempt to inject a model with a metric shirt load of extra polygons. That would cause either some slow down or just outright cause the game to fail. So you would probably have to stay within the general poly count and texture size as those are set for the ps2 limitations

Okay, I've done everything correctly up until the part where you have to apply the textures. When I look in the UV Editor of the model, all the UV shells are packed into the corner of the UV editor and they're really small. They're in the wrong position, so I'm not sure how to adjust the UV's correctly so that they align with their respective textures. Has anyone found a way around this, basically what I'm looking for is a way to preserve the correct position of the UV's of any ps2 model.

A while back (probably a couple years now) I saw where someone had mentioned a fix for model distortion. Saying something about having to shift the model's vertices by the Z axis? (might have been Y axis) I can easily fix the "pancake" model by stretching it out to size. But my character is still leaning forward. not horribly, but just enough to still look a little funky. I captured my character in T-Pose so I know he's standing as straight as possible in game. I use Blender Version 2.79 due to my hardware on this old machine. also I'm only about 4 days into giving blender a real try. (I've mostly used BlockBench on my phone so I have *SOME* experience modelling. but 99% is voxel models, not poly.) On blender, using "Shift+V" in edit mode I can move the vertices around, and get said character to straighten his pose. Problem here is only when he's (nearly) perfectly straight, it causes holes in his body/clothes. Of course I know that means some of the vertices have been pulled too far from their default position. Does anyone know if there's a better method for shifting the vertices to better fix ripped models? Game I'm ripping from is "Siren" aka "Forbidden Siren" in some countries. Apologies for any info I've forgotten to include. I'd be more than happy to fill anyone in. Any help/advice is appreciated. :) (I'm aware that worst come to worst, I'll just have to shift the character until He's straightened, then manually fix the holes. I'm just trying to get this model as close to 100% natural as possible.)

I'm hoping to get some help with this. I was able to get textures from my game of choice (.hack\\infection) but the models I'm having trouble with. I downloaded the converter and used it exactly like as in the video, buy Maya keeps throwing the message "//Error: line 0: Error reading file." It will import the original unconverted obj just fine except I can't see it, even though the names of the imported assets appear in the outliner.

Hello and first of all thanks for this very detailed video about this topic! Unfortunatly, the PCSX v0.9.8 you are using in this Video cannot run my (japanese) game rom properly, but the newer Version does. The problem here is that the newer versions don't create OBJ files with shift+F8. Do you have a clue if/why they removed this feature or if they just switched hotkeys? I tried Ninja ripper instead but that didn't go well. I already searched for this problem but i can't find any solution. I will additionally ask in the PCSX Forums where the feature has gone. I hope you know some solution for this. :(

Oh I see your problem. :/ Unfortunately it seems they totally removed this function in the newer versions of PCSX2 because of copyright issues, I hope I'm wrong and that they can provide you a solution in the forums. If your game is kinda famous in the gamer/moder community, you may find a QuickBMS script for extracting the 3D models and textures directly from your game. I suggest you to take a look at QuickBMS website and forum. Let me know if you find a solution for this problem. I will also take a look on the forums.

Would an updated version of this be possible? Can a more accessible modeling program like Blender, Unity, Unreal, etc be used in place of 3DSMax? The main issue is 3DSMax's site has changed and now to get a free trial, which only lasts 30 days, you have to either have a business or be a student. I'm unable to fake either and I don't have $205 just laying around I can use to rent this software for a month. Unless I am just not seeing a truly free option on their site, which is very possible since companies like to hide their free offers as best they can, 3DSMax is effectively out of my reach and I believe out of the reach of many others.

Unfortunately every game I try to rip from may be using a thing called _backface culling_ as it'll repeatedly remove any part that isn't directly being stared at by the camera since the game doesn't render them. Which is unfortunate since I've tried a lot of different things now. The games I've tried include U.C. Climax, Zeonic Front and Encounters in Space. All of them end up the same way. If the game can't see a surface, it won't render it, resulting in ships that has one side exactly right, and nothing on the backside. That is most unfortunate since I've wanted to rip the Blanc Rival Pegasus Class from Zeonic Front. Far easier to rip models from Dolphin but not every game is available on there unfortunately. Couple this with the fact that you have to use a horrible outdated version of PCSX2 because they disabled the rip model function in later version only serves to further frustrate the fact ( _kinda like Zsnes removing multiplayer years back and never went back to fix it_ ). Really wish PS2 emulation scene would get more love, especially when it comes to model extraction. Of course, I feelt his way about PS1 as well and Sega Saturn but yeah.
