TUTORIAL // OXI ONE - FUNKY BASS // LØSTLVLS

Музыка

Was chatting on Elektronauts about using the Oxi One to make funky basslines and user Amy asked me to make a video - so here it is!
This is a video aimed at a fairly knowledgeable owner of the Oxi One. It's not massively complex by any means (the Oxi One goes deeeeeep) but I don't linger on concepts and settings and button combinations. I will consider doing more back-to-basics videos if it will help people get to grips with this incredible device.
Further to the disclaimer in the video - I am not in any way sponsored by Oxi. I backed the Kickstarter in 2021 as a Super Early Bird so I may have got it for less than most people, but it was because I put my faith in this product early on. :)
This is the first tutorial video I have made - please leave a comment if you wish as I am eager for feedback and constructive criticism. One thing I will do in the future is use an external microphone, as the phone mic leaves something to be desired, but it definitely sounds better than a lot of dedicated but cheap microphones from the last couple of decades.

Very easy to follow, you made a good tutorial. Also voice was very good to listen too, one non edited breath i heard, but that is really minor, keep em comming. I am really interested in the oxi, so having more techno focused hybrid setup examples are welcome.

Elektron can do this, you can set a trig condition per step, so when you take 3 notes out of your sequence and don’t give it a trig condition they’ll always sound. Though this is handier and faster because it’s like, do it with all the notes except these 3

Thanks so much for making this video! i am scaaaanning YT for basic tutorials on the Oxi One (i'm a new user) and can use all the help i can get.... Any more vids you want to share will be incredibly appreciated, as exhaustively reading the manual can only get me so far - the current manual says that "Randomizers & Generators" is on page 34, and IT is actually on page 39 🙄 Any chance you could hip us onto the best workflow with the Harmonizer functions? i tried to record a chord progression, and then record a same-scale mono bassline in Harmo, only to find "Harmo Rec not supported" on the mono track.... i was really hoping we would be able to just make any kind of music happen in any direction with the Oxi - chords first, or leads first, or bassline first, and just match same-scale other tracks up with the Harmonizer and be off to the races, but there seems to be some limitations involved.... Any help (or even a short video!) would, again, be incredibly appreciated 🙏🙏🙏🌌

Thanks so much! I would love to make a video on the Harmoniser, I use it a lot when making those funky basslines bounce in tune with a chord track. What firmware are you using on the Oxi One? I've never seen the message 'Harmo Rec not supported'. I just tried it on my Oxi One - Sequencer 1 as a Chord track, Sequencer 2 as a Mono track which is set to HARMON mode, and it let me record notes from the keyboard no problem. Which firmware are you using? I'm on 4.0.0 but there's 4.1.2 out now.

How did you get the black Oxi One if you were part of the kickstarter campaign because the black version was released quite some time after the kickstarter batch? I was part of the kickstarter early birds too so I was a tiny bit miffed when the black version was announced after we had already purchased the regular one.

Hello, very good question. I had one of the first ones with the white grid buttons. However, I had to send it to Manu for repair as the MIDI out port wasn't working... To be fair I moved house one or twice while I had it so probably that shook it loose. Anyway, the black version appeared on social media and I got a new Oxi One with the black pads as apparently they can't just be dropped in kinda thing. I paid for the upgrade but it wasn't very much as it was a gesture of good will. :)

Haha, I know what you mean. Random pattern generation is brilliant but like AI artwork it can be rather soulless... The Oxi One really does allow for funky, human-like patterns that get me grooving!

@@lstlvls2521 The humanise function is the biggest attraction for me. I come from using a VST called Phrasebox which does a similar thing - the bass notes would change with chord changes. Its a cool feature but a little fiddly in VST so for a hardward device to do it - great. I also like the HY sequencers (again VST) which the OXI seems to do well. I wonder if the OXI would play nicely with the TE KO2?

do you also use oxi to record arpeggio's?

  • @lstlvls2521

    @lstlvls2521

    5 ай бұрын

I don't use arpeggios very often in my music, what I prefer to do is modulate the arpeggio mode's Strum parameter on a Chord sequence. You end up with these lovely, musically-correct and endlessly variable sequences that conform to the chords being played. The strums, when set really slow, don't necessarily conform to regular time divisions like 8ths, 16ths etc, so you get lovely free-floating notes. Perfect for slow 'ambient' music. :)

From the point of view of a beginner and that of someone who favours hardware over daws.....would you say this is a good place to start within the world of sequencers? I've got an sq1 but already find it a bit limiting. It's basically either a beatstep pro or the oxi 1. Was just wondering about it's work flow and efficiency with say a DRM 1 or other hardware synths Thanks

  • @lstlvls2521

Hi! I'd choose the Oxi One over an SQ1 or Beatstep Pro any day but I've been playing with sequencers for quite a while... As a complete beginner I would definitely struggle with it! I guess it depends what you want to do - Beatstep Pro is a brilliant sequencer and perfect for most styles of music. I personally need something more flexible and Elektron-like and that's what the Oxi One offers, and much more. If I was a beginner I'd go for the Beatstep Pro first, just because it's super easy and fun to play around with.

The updates are constant, which is a blessing as it shows the commitment to feedback. This can be a dual-edged sword for those who want something to always reliably work the same way, but there's no requirement to update it and the updates are fantastic! Looking forward to getting stuff into the new Loop function that Manu added the other day. Take care!
