    It’s completely perfect length not to long not to short, it’s entertaining with some creative though process, it helps a lot to not just copy but understand how to use that knowledge in personal workflow, now waiting for more complex animation tutorial, with actions and NLE used it would be amazing

    @@iko3D You might not be in the pose mode. it only works inside the pose mode, not the edit mode. and make sure you have an active bone selected. (light blue color means active bone)

    @@artlab_one If I had to guess I'd say he used a glass shader for the transparent part and an emission shader for the blue glow and mixed them with a mix rgb node with a voronoi texture plugged into the factor. Animation was probably done by animating the voronoi texture using the location on mapping node.

    If you have problems at 35:00 with the "Follow Path" (leg just flipping straight) just select the curve and press Ctrl+A and apply everything. I saw this solution further down the comments and thaugt to bring it up. Polyfjord thank you so much for this tutorial

    34:59 for anyone who is having trouble animating the bone to follow path, you have to apply scale and transform to the circle path first or your bone will act weird when you add the bone constraint. Atleast for me, maybe i did something wrong (blender day 17 newbie here) but hope that helps

    I notice you use a lot of bevel iterations when you set your edges. I have found a solution to sharp corners using the bevel modifier that generates much less geometry and arguably looks even better. When making the bevel modifier, you want to set your segments to 2, then go into the profile dropdown on the bevel modifier. The shape is automatically set to .5; Set it to 1 instead. This preserves the actual angle of the corner being beveled, but adds geometry to either side of that corner. This essentially 'tricks' the smooth shading and preserves flat surfaces while making the corners look rounded. Discovering this has been a godsend for me.

    @@Polyfjord Make sure you do not use any auto sharpening or edge splits when you do this, or it won't work. There are no sharp marked edges needed or edges split, the bevel modifier does all the work.

    What I really love about this is the demonstration of basic, really good principles that are totally lacking from other videos. The re-use of basic elements to save time, the approximation to make things look "good enough", and the emphasis on good shapes over complex designs is really nice and something other youtubers seem to either completely drop from their tutorials, or sometimes even just lack as skills.

    I am not a total beginner, been using Blender as my retirement hobby and this will be my fourth project. There are a lot of things to learn (and review) in your tutorial, but it all makes perfect sense to me and I have not had much trouble following you. I do things over if they're not right and learn a little more. I don't really care if it takes me awhile. I enjoy the accomplishment of finishing a project but I enjoy the getting there the most. You are nice and chill and your instructions are nice and clear plus the written keystrokes help a lot. I don't think I've bitten off more than I can chew but we'll see. I'm learning new things and having fun. That's what counts. Yes?

    The goPro-ish camera angle on the last robot (with the neon tubes or something) made it look extremely realistic. Just goes to show that camerawork is one of the key things when it comes to "selling" the render.

    Now I know CGI... :) For an engineer, it feels uncomfortable to watch not dimensioning things exactly, but, this approach is so cool to illustrate concepts, that I feel convinced to learn Blender for such needs. Thanks for all the keyboard shortcuts! Amazing!

    Wow, this is fantastic. I really learned a lot from your rigging technique... I think you managed to make me finally understand how the IK stuff works.     At the 35:00 mark, after you make your walk path, make sure to apply any rotation or scale, otherwise when you do the bone constraint, it does weird stuff.

    Bro, you just got a new sub. You have just taught me new things about blender, and you have also gotten me into a new type of creature. This video helped me make my own type of mechanical spider of my own. Without your help, I would have never learned how to rig things in like, 5 or so minutes.     for those who can't redo the rigging at 28:40, delete parenting in object properties (relations). In pose mode, subdivide the last bone, reparent the meshes and then (tricky part) you need to rename the bones so that they follow the right order. Blender uses their names for the hierachy of bones!

    When I move my object or the empty in object mode my whole rig just moves with all the bones just gets misplaced. In the tutorial when he moves the empty his end part of the bone stays in the same place and only is empty is moving but that's not happening for me any solution for this ? Will be great full

    I love these insect robot tutorials 😊 Just a quick idea for the floor: when you increase the array count to not run out of floor, you don't need a long floor actually. Instead you can animate the texture mapping. Let's say you move the floor 5 m in X direction between two keyframes. When using the "Object" texture coordinate, you can move the texture with the Mapping node 5 m on X (or -5) and the floor can stay in place. As long as the texture is set to repeat, the creature can run forever 😁

    Thanks for watching!! Hmm in my experience animated texture mapping doesn’t support motion blur! I have previously solved this problem by making a conveyor belt, which is especially useful when working with a lot of particles that would otherwise slow down the render: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dY2d0c1-XZfVnrg.html

    THANK YOU Polyfjord!!! I finished my very first animation and render(s) with your help. Plus it was my first time doing anything with the armature. I got Blender because I needed something to make models with for my 3d printer. I chose it for multiple reasons, one of them being that I knew that it is capable of that, this, and so much more. I also knew that if I had it, I would almost have to learn. It's just so hard to find the time. Yeah, there was a LOT of valuable information given in a short period of time, but you can pause/rewind any time you want. That's just one of the benefits of learning from KZread videos. Also you were there for me day and night at any moments notice. Thank you. I want to add that I started watching your "next" video. I think the first thing I noticed was that you moved your "chat" window so we can see the keystrokes displayed onscreen. It must have helped because I remember looking at it quite a few times. I see you have streamlined the whole process from presentation all the way down to more of the powerful mechanics built into Blender now. The timing feels perfect. I am glad I went through all of the steps to finish this. I feel like I understand more of the underlying fundamentals than if I went straight to the new quicker and much easier approach. I am confident that it will go quickly when I get back to it. I'm just thinking I need to add a little bummpety-bumpy audio to this one first. I am so excited and happy. I will create!!! I will create good things! (I hope) :)

    Excellent video! But I have one request for the future. I understand that you can't go into too much detail on modeling every time, but for beginners like me, it would be VERY useful if you just turned on the display of keystrokes. Some manipulations are not always possible to catch, even if in general you explain what you are doing)

    jeez watching you work in real-ish time is incredible. obviously there are probably a bunch of cuts for brevity’s sake but when you’re talking and casually flying through shortcuts it’s actually very inspiring. edit: aw man, idk what happened to my armature. the movement starts at the second joint, not at the first z-axis one. edit 2: LOL nvm I figured it out. the chain length was the same as yours but you forgot to add the last bone. got iiiit.

    Fantastic tutorial, as always! 48:18 do you have Persistent Data enabled for renders? If you go to Render Properties -> Performance -> Final Render, there is a checkbox titled "Persistent Data" which sends the scene data to the GPU only on the first frame and keeps it in the GPU's memory for the next frames in the animation. Not sure if that would help your situation, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

    if your bones and mesh move at 33:01, make sure your cursor is at the exact center of all your armature, or else scale around the median point

    @@Polyfjord CTRL+L -> Copy Animation Data. And you can then make local under: Object menu -> Relations -> Make Single User -> Object Animation or Object Data Animation (idk the difference between those two)

    Having trouble at about 32 minutes in. I have all 6 legs, the IK seems to work fine, but when I use the child of constraint to attach a leg to the body controller it just moves the leg around instead of using the IK and bending it. It seems like the small controller bone at the end of the leg stays in place when you move the body controller, but mine just floats around. Any idea where I went wrong?

    Found the problem. There are Bone Constraints and Object Constraints. the Bone Constraints tag you can only see while being in Pose Mode, so go into Pose Mode and add Bone Constraints instead of Object Constraints, even tho if they looks the same, so thats a little bit confusing. But i hope i could help you.

    Is there a reason why you use shift + d to duplicate the actual geometry instead of alt + d which duplicates the object and uses the same geometry? With alt +d you would just have edit the original not every duplicate and it should perform better overall as well.

    First u should join both bezier curves if you duplicated them in object mode (select both of them then press Ctrl + J) then select both of the top vertices and press F to fill between. Then you'll have a weird thingy u'll know when you see it. Select one of the two vertices and delete it by pressing X -> Vertices. Hope it helps :)

    31:55 Im having trouble with attaching the armature leg to child of the body controller, whenever i do it and move the body controller, my leg is dead stiff and moves in a straight line, (it doesn;t bend at the joints) anyone know the reason??

    I've figured it out and I'm kicking myself for not realising what it was for this long. The reason it isn't working (at least for me anyway) was because I was using the object constraints panel on the right rather than the bone constraints panel. Hope this helps!
