Tutorial: Changing out the Blu-Ray assembly out of your Slim PS3

Ойындар

This is a tutorial on how to change out your Slim (CECH-2001A/B) PS3's Blu-Ray Assembly Drive. If you're unsure if it's your laser diode that died or something else, here's a link to ifixit.com where you can diagnose the problem.

Also, here's the site where I bought my replacement assembly

I forgot to mention that these Blu-ray drive parts are NOT interchangeable, so you cannot change out a Blu-ray drive from one PS3 to another, the part you get HAS to be the same one that came out of your system. For example, a Blu-ray drive (KES-450E KEM-450EAA) will not work on a PS3 slim that has a Blu-ray drive (KES-450A KEM-450AAA) or on the earlier "FAT" models and the newer super slim models too.

I own a PS3 Slim 2001a that runs on a (KES-450A KEM450AAA). A couple of weeks ago it gave out on me. If I were to purchase another (KES-450A KEM450AAA) from Amazon or eBay, would replacing the entire disk drive also work?

mustafa rashad I keep my PS3 in a well ventilated area with a box fan behind it to keep it cool. Every now and then when I'm on, I place my hand on the back of the system, if I feel its getting hot then I turn the fan on to help cool it down; but other than having to replace the laser, I never had any other serious problems with it. Like I said, I got the slim PS3 back in May 2010, I remember that because two days after buying three new games, the PS3 I had before getting this one YLOD on me, that one was the 40GB version and I had that thing sitting close to the wall. So keep any game console in a well ventilated area and if there's enough room behind it, put a box fan behind it to help cool it down a bit, also, I heard that leaving a console on a carpet or rug would heat the system faster so don't do that either.

gunsnipe033795 ok thank you very much man I really glad to talk to you and just a quick question. do the fans that you use to cool down your PS3 are these fans located at the back of your PS3 and they are pointed toward the back of the PS3 where the hot air comes out from or what?

mustafa rashad The box fan I use is pointed right behind the heat exhaust vent, this is also where the capacitor is. So as the heat is coming out, cool air is also going in to help cool the system down.

Why do you replace the laser and the track that it runs on and just not the laser itselt? Can i just buy a new laser and put in back on the old track?

I bought the entire assembly just to make it a little bit easier to install. If I bought just the laser, then I would've had to take apart the track assembly to install the laser; but with the new assembly, all I had to do was take the rubber feet off of the old assembly and put them on the new assembly. It's up to you if you want to buy just the laser and install it into your old assembly; but for me, I just went the easier route

then you'll have to get a new system. You MIGHT get away with finding a used pcb board from another system that has the same serial number as your system's motherboard; but the chances of finding that are slim, so your best bet is to get a new system

I don't know if an unlocked pcb board will work and as for the other thing, they would need a logic pcb board to to run the laser, without it the drive won't work

Trent Bilello personally, I heard people buying stuff on ebay and they got ripped off; but if you can contact the guy and see if its all legit, then give it a shot. The PS3 Motherboard and PCB Board have a unique serial number that allows them to communicate with each other. If you were to put a PCB board from a PS3 that doesn't have the same serial number that matches the serial number on your PS3's Motherboard, then it will not work

Hey i heard from somewhere that every ps3 blue ray drive is married to a motherboard, in other words only one blue ray in the world will work with my ps3's motherboard. is that true? I hope its not. but if it is I gotta know. would somebody tell me?

  • @Gunsnipe3795

it is true, the logic board on your Blu-ray drive is married to the motherboard that's in your PS3. Even if you find a PS3 that has the same serial number that yours has, the chances that the logic board in that PS3 will match "marriage" code that the motherboard in your PS3 is very slim to none. If your Blu-ray drive isn't working and its determined that it's your drive's logic board, then your best bet is to get a new PS3

Andrew Sultzer So you need a replacement blu-ray drive system (the black plastic thing that holds the laser). You can find those on either Amazon or Ebay. As long as the laser and controller board are fine, you'll be good to go
