TUTORIAL: Burying Racing Stripes: Part 2 | Sketchy's Garage

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this 2 part video, we show you how to prep, paint, and bury stripes on a steel aftermarket hood for a 72 Chevelle. If you are just starting out and are thinking of getting into the auto body painting game, my advice is to take a leap and make an investment in a GOOD spray gun set. A cheaper one will get the job done, but you will encounter more issues and have some troubleshooting on the back end to correct. The same holds true for your paints.
We are using Glasurit 460 Clearcoat in this video.

    Took me forever to find it but this is exactly what I was looking for, great tips and your process makes sense. Especially since the main concern I had was burying the transition. Can't wait to try your technique!

    On top of all this talent he does it without a paint booth. I was looking for the next video where he buffed it out. Thanks for talking us through the layout.

    We ended up not buffing it because he was going to hang it on the wall in his man cave. I do got some videos on how to wet sand and buff on my channel.

    Awesome video - I didn't see you clean any of the basecoat after striping since you were touching it with bare hands. Maybe you didn't film that but very important

  • @SketchysGarage

    @SketchysGarage

    Just be sure your hands are clean and you'll be fine. When spraying a metallic base, you don't want to wipe it because it can disrupt how it looks.

    Im following the techniques on the video except I'm using Custom Shop primer/ sealer over K2 gray. The epoxy primer is black because I'm base coating Candy Green and Gold racing stripes. At what stage do I apply masking tape to form the double stripes? (K2 primer like on the video; or on the black primer?) Thanks bud!

    Coats are in this order: Gray Epoxy primer....2 coats. Gray High build K2 primer...2 coats (Thats where I'm at . Next will be black primer/sealer. Then base; then clear. (planned)

  • @SketchysGarage

    @SketchysGarage

    I would go ahead and paint the whole hood and trunk lid gold and put 2 coats of clear on it. Then let it sit a couple days and take some 600 grit paper and knock the shine off both the deck lid and hood. Next mask off your stripes once that is done put a coat of black sealer down. Then you can paint your green, after the final coat of green remove masking from stripes check the gold to make sure it didn't get any over spray on it then clear the whole panel with 3 coats. If you need anymore help just let me know. I have another video about stripes on my channel. I think it's titled how to use candy for racing stripes.

    Cool. Clean tape edges? No dust or nibs? Is the rest of the shop dust free?

  • @SketchysGarage

    @SketchysGarage

    3 жыл бұрын

    There's no tape edges that's the reason we did it this way it buries everything, a few nibs but your going to have that. The shop was what a typical shop is just kinda cleaned up in the area I was spraying and went to town. I did have steady airflow being pulled across it. Thanks for watching!😎

    Is that green and gold lol nice work but the colors not so much ,should have went with white not gold ,to me just lay down 3 coats of white /your gold and 3 coats of green and then the clear looks like an awesome job but white would pop much more then gold ,but that's just me nice job you rock !
