***** Drawing poses with Ahmed I think, he has a bunch of tutorials with tips scattered throughout, it's not really step by step but more of observing and trying it out I would say plus he teaches how to draw dynamic poses not just arms by the side and standing straight poses

Great tutorial. I always kinda wondered the same thing as I see some artists start with a feature to flesh out as they go whereas I really like structure but then I can see where the structure can hinder some of the expression I could put into a drawing. It's like if you already know where things go, you should just jump right in but if you don't have structure down, then things just start to look way off and the drawing suffers because of a lazy artist doesn't want to master fundamentals first.

As a former nurse I studied anatomy and physiology in great depth all the way down to DNA and how all the different cells are made up. I have only begun diving into art this past year very heavily and these videos are how I am learning so much so fast. I have done some of the mapped out type heads and faces and my style of learning simply doesn't allow for that type of, shall we say, scaffolding build up since I know that's not how the human body is built. Everything is imperfection, you just don't notice it unless it's exaggerated. When you broke into the skulls and built of that I very loudly said "YES!" waking both of my dogs up. That was incredibly helpful. I did buy an anatomy for the artist book that I have yet to use, I just got it a few weeks ago. You breathed new life into me with wanting to take on these challenges such as the 50 heads. When I first began drawing, knowing people struggle so much with hands, the first thing I did was draw 100 hands in all different positions. I am very confident in my hand drawing now so I'm excited to do the heads but won't be putting a time limit on it. O try to avoid putting pressure on myself that intense because the reason I started art and am no longer a nurse is because I have a chronic genetic illness (the irony) that has rendered me medically and physically disabled and I sleep A LOT. 20 hours a day typically. I tried to participate in Inktober this year and felt so much pressure it was fun for me. So the time constraints are tough, down the road and looking at my growth and confidence just in the past year, I will revisit I next October. I am really glad I found your channel and your art. I usually struggle with tutorials done on the computer with Procreate or whatever it is. But this was much different and was extremely helpful. I am pulling out my book, the - Basic Human Anatomy (An Essential Visual Guide For Artists) by Robert Osti book I mentioned and have decided to draw 30 skulls with and without necks and or shoulders. Thank you for all the awesome help you offer other artists of all degrees. I am a beginner and you helped me tremendously in the first video I have ever seen of yours.

Yep, I definitely think for studying and learning the more structured approach is super beneficial. The second approach is more fun, but only if you know what you're doing! Usually I'll draw the face almost gesturally and then draw the underlay afterwards to correct the mistakes, since starting from the underlay often yields really boring results for me.

I'd recommend getting an anatomy and/or figure drawing book to help as well. If you compare your drawing's proportions to something, you can address your faults as an artist and improve them faster. I don't think I have the authority to give you a good recommendation because I'm not a master of the human body either, but I have heard that the book "figure drawing for all it's worth" and "figure drawing design and invention" are pretty good. I can't give any confident recommendations on anatomy books because I haven't seen a book for anatomy that is a "must buy", unlike the figure drawing books I talked about. So, you're probably going to want to Google a good book on anatomy for artists. Like I said, I'm still learning so take what I say with a grain of salt but I hope this helps you on your art journey! ^^

Idk if you still need help or not, but old books & magazines are your best friend! My mom had tons of old fashion magazines and I would take a sharpie and trace all day long. First, find a full figure draw and organic skeleton over it ( torso and pelvis boxes, beans, the spine, head, etc). Second, following the creation of the skeleton, you trace over the body parts of the full form to understand the shape. Finally, on a separate sheet of paper, recreate the skeleton and draw the body over it. Just remember that reference is always at your fingertips. You can even take a pic of yourself for reference if you can't find the pose in a book, on the internet, or simply don't have or want to draw in magazines lol.

I think it was half on accident, but the skull reference was actually very helpful. I'm trying to get back into art - used to be fairly good at landscapes, but I've always been horrible at anything more alive than a tree. Had to take anatomy too though, just somehow never connected those two subjects. Always thinking cartoonish instead of realism, clearly it can work for a bit of both. Thanks!

I personally do variation 2. I feel it gives more of a personality to your character. When using outlines/pose lineart the character tends to become a cookie cutter with just different styles. Where when you build from scratch the character has a more unique look. After all humans are far from being identical.
