Turning Simple Three Part Goblet - Low Risk - High Reward

www.AsWoodTurns.com
Of the many types of goblets that I have turned, I think
a three piece goblet is the simplest and very rewarding.
Simple: Only smaller pieces are extending out from the spindle.
Therefore, no steady rest is usually required.
Efficient: Smaller size pieces of wood can be used.
The stem does not require wasting most of a block of wood.
Pretty: The bottom of the base is easily turned and finished.
My goblet is about 8 inches tall and about 2.5 inches diameter,
finished with wipe-on poly.
Some newer viewers may wonder why I insist on wearing a face shield for safety. Please check out this video:

Enjoy.

I can easily see the advantage of making a goblet in three pieces. As you point out it lessens the probability of failure due to the slender stem. I like the use of contrasting wood also. Lots of possibilities there. Yours turned out very nice. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe. I will too.🙂🙂

Beautiful goblet Alan. I mainly make one piece goblets but have had to resort to three piece ones when the stem broke while turning. Then a three piece one is an easy repair and no one is the wiser.

I’ve been doing three piece goblets using a similar method but I have used a 1/2” tenon on the stem and grab hold of it using a set of pen jaws. The other difference is that I put a 1/2” mortise on the top of the stem and then epoxy in the goblet from an old wine glass.
