Turning Back Time with Neil deGrasse Tyson and Kevin Stone

Ғылым және технология

How do you extend your longevity? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-hosts Chuck Nice and Gary O’Reilly discuss epigenetics, tissue replacement, nanotech, and how to be in your prime forever with surgeon Dr. Kevin Stone.
We explore the phenomenon of older athletes staying fit for their sports longer. Are these people outliers or about to become the norm? Is 36 the new 26? We talk about lifestyles like Mick Jagger’s. Is a lot of your health actually in your head? Is it possible to overcome bad habits? How do we make a 30-year sports career possible?
Which joint is the one to fail first? You’ll learn about the different forms of arthritis and the frontier science that goes into it. How do stem cells work? We talk about replacing body parts and when humans will begin to turn into cyborgs. Discover the leading medicine in extending the length of your mobility.
Why should humans avoid space travel? We discuss what space does to your body and gene expression. How does epigenetics play a role in our longevity? What is the future of nanotech and surgical robots? Are we going to have robots going through our bodies like The Magic School Bus? We also explore medical applications of 3D printing and how we could regrow body parts. How close are we to living forever?
Thanks to our Patrons Thomas MacKay, Kristina Norris, ichigo kurosaki, Courtney, Franklin Soto, Josiah Figueroa, and Donjohrae Marts for supporting us this week.

I remember Dr's. telling my dad to stop playing hockey at 80 because of potential injury from a hit or fall. He quit hockey. Then at 88 he was asked to stop skating in case of a fall. He skated till he was 90, when an abdominal aneurysm took him. He was always moving, and never had pain.

  • @hypernova4997

Dr. Stone's point on mentality assisting recovery and longevity of play (especially the part about addicting yourself to your sport) is especially true for skateboarders. The only way to continue willingly throwing yourself at concrete and injuring yourself constantly is to be addicted in such a capacity. Tony Hawk is obviously the most well known example, but there are plenty other skateboarders in his generation that are still riding too. Are they in their prime? Definitely not. But their bodies put up with an impressive amount of strain for someone of that age and I argue that this addiction to self improvement plays an important role in that since it is a fundamental part of skateboarding. There's a saying among skateboarders that goes "you dont stop skateboarding because you get old, you get old because you stop skateboarding."

As a patient that has many surgeries (not elective, or cosmetic) it is EXTREMELY important to have a *POSITIVE* outlook before, during, and after the fact. Those people trying to help you don't deserve to be berated and brought down by misery and poor-me left and right. They're there to *help you,* please -- Let them, work with them, and KEEP ON KEEPIN' ON -- it's a bad day, not a bad life.

This gave me a much-needed emotional boost! I am 58, and although I switched from outright running to racewalking when I turned 44 to spare my knees from further damage and put most of the impact on larger joints, it is still quite a workout. I was lamenting that I may not be able to keep doing getting my cardio fix for much longer, now I feel more positive if I continue to be careful about what I eat and how I stretch. I rather like being in the same exclusive club with other aging athletes.

The doctor forgot to add, when you run properly, you can run forever. Most people don't mid-sole land, which loads our entire system in to a spring and instead use heel striking, like they do with walking. Which is also bad even for walking, because you literally have to over come stopping every time you heel strike, which your joints bear the brunt of rather than your muscles when mid-sole landing.

I like how they challenge each other. In my opinion pro athletes obsess over their bodies because it's not just a sport. It's their job. A contract that they have to fulfill physically. I feel they are always thinking ahead of how they can always do better because the job is nothing but performance. I also totally agree. If you feed your body positivity it will react that way because you are kind of tricking your brain in a way.

I'm REALLY glad the doctor is going this route, as there are too many in his profession who think what you eat has NOTHING to do with your conditions. If they did, they'd be telling you what to do, rather than saying, sorry you will just have to keep coming back to make sure it doesn't get worse, rather than FIXING the problem. People have NO IDEA how much the human body wants to keep itself at peak performance, but the vast majority of people DO NOT fuel their bodies properly, what so ever. Heck, even some top athletes STILL eat fast food garbage, because they don't know any better. However, if you're on top of it and keep it up, consistently, you'll notice that your 'decline' isn't ANYWHERE near what people keep saying. Why is that? Because the VAST MAJORITY don't do the RIGHT THINGS to begin with! So of course you're going to hear all the qualms of those who choose to go down the easy road, only to find out that it's not very easy on the body, at all. The only problem with our society, is everyone has been conned and we all know the adage 'It's easier to con someone than it is to convince them they've been conned in the first place.' I mean, why does this specific group just keep getting larger(pun intended)? Why do the diseases that plague our society keep getting worse and more widespread, not just in areas of the west anymore? Weird, how one diet, is taking over the world and destroying it all at the same time. Go Westerners! =P

I agree with Gary so far only certain people have this comeback ability and I seem to be one of those people, but then I always had a baby face and could abuse my body not that I did at least not all the time. I think that this develops the mindset needed not thinking you are handicap...

Dr. Stone is so smart that he forgets not everyone is in the top 1%. Not everyone has access to the best medicine, procedures, foods, facilities, etc. Its not just about mindset.

Everyone is different. I am just about the same shape i was in my 20s in my 40s. Yeah,i should have played pro something. And some perform better later in life because of being more efficient and smart about how to use your body and what it is capable of.

Great discussion! As an extension of this topic you should talk with Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard University Medical School Dept. of Molecular Biology.
