StarTalk-ology with Alie Ward & Neil deGrasse Tyson - Cosmic Queries
Ғылым және технология
What kinds of ologies are out there? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice explore and answer questions about the vast world of niche sciences with science communicator and host of Ologies, Alie Ward.
Is there such a thing as butt-ology? We touch on gluteology, the science of humor, and what it takes to be curious and nosy in the sciences. How do you convince someone who doesn’t believe in science? Learn about vaccine infodemiology (studying vaccine hesitancy) and agnotology (the study of willful ignorance).
We discuss the advancement of civilization and language. What is language? We explore scientific feats and their relationship to language. How do you introduce a new concept to someone? How do you correct the record when you’ve said something wrong? We discuss misinformation, the study of fear, and how to handle anxiety. What do flat earthers fear most? Is there such thing as a stupid questions?
Next, we discuss electric car-ology with the help of Chevrolet Bolt EUV. Are electric vehicles as good for the environment as everyone says they are? Discover how electric vehicles are transforming the transportation grid. We also explore oil as a strategic commodity and how we can future proof our society. Are electric vehicles only for people in cities? We address range anxiety, Michael Faraday, and how electricity actually works. All that, plus, who’s faster the Chevy Bolt or Usain Bolt?

Not Chevroletology. Was a great show until the shameful 10 minute Chevrolet ad. Not only did it take time away from the guest & her topic, but it shamefully (shamelessly?) shilled for a car company rather than about EVs in general. Please stick to the guest.

Always a great show when the guest can match wits with Neil & Lord Nice
Neil reminded me of something my Dad likes to say a lot "Most people learn just enough to get through life and then they stop". Truer words have never been spoken.

I´m 54, and i find your fathers words to be wisdom i could have used decades ago. Personally i have come to call it mental laziness. We are all lazy and that many times leads to inventions that save time, and moves civilization forward. But when that laziness means ignoring facts logic and science, they become destructive forces that hinders us from moving forward as a species.
I kinda wish that would have been one episode on EVs and one episode about -ologies, the EVs are super interesting, and something that's going to touch so many people in so many walks of life. I'd definitely love to see a future episode with an EV expert, or another episode featuring Alie Ward.
As always, I am absolutely chuffed to have found this channel and to have watched this particular video
To the contrary, Lord Nice, you are very much needed on Startalk.

Love u Chuck! Love you Neil! Need both u guys together! And special guests are a bonus! Thanks StarTalk!
"-ology", as you mentioned, is the "study of" so there should be a never ending list for those that are curious. How many skills does it take for survival? Not to misconvey, but work skills are learned. I think those that know how to use tools are the foundation of our technology, economy, and future.
Can we all just agree that Neil needs to start an asmr channel, I don't care if he is reading the worlds most boring thing, he has the most relaxing voice

I knew I recognized Alie from somewhere, having grown up in San Francisco (Sunset), I was a big fan of Nash Bridges, and she played Cassidy's (Nash's daughter) roommate, Miranda. Who knew that she grew up to become a superstar Science Communicator and hard-working demigod?!?!? Loved the episode!! Alie rocks!!
OMG! Alie Ward on Startalk!!!! This is like my dream interview :)
I like Neil`s idea of finding another room, when you notice you might be the smartest, in that room. I have one that I use quite a bit, that is basically the same thing. ~If I can`t prove myself wrong, I will find someone who can~
I am a teacher. Everything Alie is saying is ABSOLUTELY on topic. Growth mindset is the way to teach. Don't be afraid to MAKE MISTAKES.

Alie Ward is awesome! Her "Ologies" podcast is the best. You learn so much from so many passionate people. I am also so surprised by the episodes I didn't think I would like, they end up being some of my favorite.

It's not StarTalk without Chuck.
I was talking to my former father-in-law and mentioned how all local route postal vehicles should be electric because they always travel the same route and electric motors excel at stop and go driving compared to infernal combustion. His question was "where would you charge it?" As if there was a post office that didn't have electricity. I don't know what he was thinking but it didn't make sense in context
Love the t-shirt that Chuck is wearing.

What a great episode to watch after seeing your panel at stony brook!
Min. 17:00- regarding language limitations impacting understanding of advance science. That question reminded me of the book series Clan of the Cave Bear. The central premise of that story was that the reason the Neanderthals were doomed was that they were psychically communicating thousands of years of knowledge to succeeding generations and never developed a new way of learning, which would have entailed learning a new way of acquiring understanding and communicating that knowledge.

Enjoyed this... Would love in depth analysis of the mining/production of EVs
Hi Neil! Im a big fan of your show. Instead of asking the questions Im having, think it would be great if there is an entire episode of startalk just talking about what would happen if string theory will officially be proven aside from more understanding in quantum mechanics and having a unifide theory of both general relativity and quantum mrchanics, what else could it give advantage to other fields of scientific studies? Thank you guys!
Ali...I've not had a crush in a long time. Your mind is beautiful. Thanks for sharing my Planet. Keep rocking. Cheers.
Chuck Nice is the man. Funny as heck.
I've watched 100 humans AND Brain Child with my daughter (10 yrs old)! Will def check out her other stuff! 🥰
They could have done a show for April's fool's day by having only comedians on, trying their best to answer questions about universe xD
Never replace Chuck
You can do these shows without chuck, but the ones with chuck are the best ones. ✌️
I have to say, I live in upstate NY. I Installed a 8Kw solar system on my house over 6 years ago. For that 6 years we paid less than $20/mo, for that time. It was $20,000 after state & fed tax rebates. I had a net meter on house, so I made WAY MORE electric in summer, the meter tracked it & gave me a kw/h credit for what I made & didn't use (it essentially went to the neighbors). So it can be done, EVEN IN UPSTATE NY! BTW, sold my house, after 20 years, raised a family there. It was totally worth the investment. Bought it for $105,000, sold for $175,000.
The science vs art college major conversation really struck me. In high school, my oldest daughter had a great talent as a visual artist, but also got top grades in sciences, and was especially interested in environmental science. I tried to influence her toward art (I was a theatre arts major), and she came back with the best response. "Dad, I can teach myself art. I can't teach myself science." I couldn't argue, and the topic never came up again. Both of us work in the IT field now. Also, in the discussion about types of vehicle power, I was listening very hard for something about the built-in efficiency of economies of scale. That is, that a small internal combustion engine is far less efficient in creating usable energy than a large power plant, even if they are both using fossil fuels. This is why we build our homes on a regional grid, and only use gas generators as emergency backup.
Wouldn’t be near as fun without Lord Chuck!!
This was a cool episode, never heard ofnher before but those shows sound interesting and she seems awesome (great sense of humour too)
lol chuck that look from neil was 'you are not suppose to explain the joke bruh! @26:48
In the discussion about electric vehicles, I am glad that you included annual savings in the calculation. I am a fan of electric vehicles for several reasons, including lifetime costs/return on investment. Lately, I have become concerned about EVs after news stories like the 36 hour back-up due to a winter storm in Virginia in January. If I'm driving a completely electric vehicle, how do I survive that kind of event. They aren't that uncommon. There was a more recent one in Pennsylvania in which 70 cars wrecked in one or more pile-ups. I don't want to take this conversation into the climate change arena, I just hope to address a concern.

@40:37 - A bunch of startups in Europe like Sono motors and Lucid motors are coming up cars that have solar panels integrated directly into the car body! All the time that is is sitting out in the parking lot while you are at work, it charges up the battery - for free! It is not a lot of range addition, but covers a big part of daily commute for most people.
Epistemology is the study of knowledge
Alie Ward felt more like a guest co-host at times. Definitely need her on the show regularly hint hint 😉 Startalk
Best way to teach people is actually to have the students teach each other and the teacher be the guide for the students helping the more advanced students learn more intricate things and then have those students teach the moderate students to teach the slower students. This is because you learn better whenever you teach someone else and you're more likely to be able to reach them if you're coming from a similar place of lack of understanding within your recent past so there for someone with a college degree is extremely distant from someone in elementary through high school and still pretty distant with college students versus College professors who have master's degrees and or a doctorate. The problem is that whenever you have known it for so long it's difficult for you to remember what it was like to not understand so you're going to not come at it from the right angle usually
Neil just gave me an excuse for being the way I am.....I put my own unique print on whatever I do.....thanks neil
Great show guys! Is there a study on ishes?? And Chuck I always get mad when you get cut off by the " smart people" . Stick with it guys 😉
