Turning A Cigar Pen

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I turn a cigar pen and a Wall Street III pen from Woodcraft. I turned a pen and pencil in one of my earlier videos but I was never happy with the quality of that video. To those that have watched some or all of my previous pen video, I thank you. This one is a repeat project but a better quality video. I usually turn pens before the holidays for two reason 1) I get requests from family and friends and 2) they make great gifts for the "hard to buy for" people on the list. I hope you enjoy this video. Comments are always welcome.

    Herms - Thank you for the comment and for watching my video. I bought the assembly press from Craft Supplies. They call it an Ultimate Assembly Tool. Cut and paste to your bowser or go to their website www.woodturnerscatalog.com and search for Ultimate Assembly Tool. Good luck and thanks again for watching. Take care, Steve

    hi steve i noticed when you used your insert tool it kept rolling around on you. i think if you ground down some flat spots on the handle it would help keep it still.

    I have a few questions: with linseed oil how many coats did you do & how many coats of CA? With everyday use how does the wood look. I ask as I have some bog oak & didn't like the finished look of 8 coats of medium CA. this might be an option.

    Brad - I'm sorry but I don't recall how many coats of BLO and CA I put on this pen. I no longer have the pen so I can't comment on how it held up. I stopped using the BLO a few years ago and just use a CA finish now. Sorry I can't be more helpful. I did see a video from RJBWoodturner where he used BLO and CA. The video is less than a year old so he might be able to answer your questions. I put a link to his video below. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. Both pens turn out great. Is that a special tail center instead of the usual 60 degree cone? Thanks, Cip Mendez

  • @slindsley1951

    @slindsley1951

    10 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Cip. I got the tail center from Penn State. They call it a pen mandrel saver. It's hollow in the center sized for the pen mandrel. The mandrel passes through the center which allows the center to push directly onto the bushings. Theory is that it doesn't cause the mandrel to flex like what might happen with a cone center. It works pretty well. I've seen something similiar in the woodturner's catalog. Take care, Steve

    Great video - one question - do you have any tips for aligning the drill bit with the axis of the blank - so that the drill bit runs straight down the work piece? Some trick for aligning the table with the drill bit?

  • @slindsley1951

    @slindsley1951

    10 жыл бұрын

    The only tip I'd have would be to use a sharp drill bit. Brad point bits seem to wander less than a normal bit. Proper drill press speed is also important. Go slow when drilling and clear chips often. If find that if it take my time and back the bit out often I have better luck. Even doing all that I still come out a bit off sometimes but never enough to ruin the look of the pen. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching my video! Take care, Steve

    Thanks! I guess I was also wondering about how to measure the 90 degree angle(s) between the vertical bit and the drill press table. Can one assume that the bit is exactly parallel to the post on the drill press, for example?

  • @slindsley1951

    @slindsley1951

    fgriffintx Smith Making sure the drill bit is at 90 degrees to the table can be as simple as checking it with a square. The blade of the square should touch the drill bit along it's length. I use a digital angle gage (Wixey makes one as do others) to check the angle. The gage has magnets on it's side that hold it to the drill bit. Zero out the gage while it's on the bit and then put it on the table and if it still reads zero they are 90 degrees to each other. There are other ways to do it with little or not cost. Google "squaring up drill press table" and you'll find other information. Hope I answered your question. If not let me know and I'll try again. :-) Take care, Steve

    Alf - I'm not sure that I understand your question. Pen bushings are specific to the type of pen. For example, the bushings for a cigar pen won't work for a pen such as a Wall Street II. The instructions that come with the pen kit usually provide information on the appropriate bushing size. There are videos on KZread on how to make your own bushings. Search KZread and you'll find them. Not sure that I was all that helpful. Take care, Steve

    Yes, very !!! but thats what i mean ,you need to buy bushes for the Slimline ,the Euro ,the Churchhill style pens. It seem pen kit manufacturers want us to buy more,, but it will stop me from making different types of pens,and just make the ones i've got bushes for ,are there any bushes that will do more than one kit. Thanks i will look for those other video sites ,,Regards Alf

    Alf - I've found that the bushings for a cigar pen from Woodcraft, for example, also work for a cigar pen from Craft Supplies. I believe some of the bushings are interchangeable between pen kit suppliers but only for the style of pen. Using a pair of calipers and a pen kit you could turn a pen blank without using a bushing. You'd have to take careful measurements of the pen parts and turn the blank to those dimensions. I'll be turning some pens in the near future and will try without a bushing. If I can get it to work I'll post a video. Take care, Steve
