In this video I show how to turn your Android smartphone into a TV tuner. I'm not talking about live streaming TV channels through the internet - I'm talking about using an actual digital TV tuner to pick up free local over the air channels with an antenna.
Below is my link to the tuner. Make sure to select the right variation for either a Micro-USB or USB-C output depending on your phone.

    An HD HomeRun is a pretty good option for around the house. It's a network-attached tuner. You can leave it plugged in all the time and connect clients over your LAN (WiFI) to it whenever you want. No need for USB-C or lightning or awkward portable antennas. You can also stream from it to a hard drive and use it as a DVR.

I also tried it on my older Nexus 7 with Android 6.0.1, on that it works fine for both the TV and the record function, so I'm guessing the lack of ability to record on the Lenovo is an Android 10 issue. I remember when they made TVs that were really am radios. Then came Sony walkmans which I never owned. I had a 12 inch Admiral that had Compactron tubes in it. The set was always on except the picture tube. When you turned on to watch the picture tube lit up instantly. Also the sound came on also. Someone told me to remove a diode then you can completely turn off the set. Well the only close thing to a small set was my DVD player I bought at BB. It had a seven inch screen. Now they make a small monitor that does all inputs: composite, HDMI, VGA , BNC and USB even with stereo sound. Eight inch color screen with HD quality. Perfect for my car so I can use a laptop computer for my GPS using Microsoft maps with GPS antenna. Much better than a Garman or Tom Tom GPS real maps. Then it won't tie up my cell phone for calls. I can use the HDMI inputs for a tv tuner and the VGA for my laptop. I know this dongle is much smaller but my.phone would be tied up for tv.

    Some people (especially older people) are not into Internet & social media tend to spend more time in front of the TV. Some younger folks prefer to watch whatever content available online. Getting a good reception indoor can be tricky. Even if you're within 20mi from a broadcast tower, you still want your antenna to be near a window facing the tower to maximize reception. In a high-rise with concrete all around, positioning an antenna near a window is even more critical.

    I get tired of UK content creators and discussion forum commentators who state that handheld TV is impossible in the digital age because you can only receive TV via an external rooftop aerial. I have the DVB-T2 MyGica dongle (only Micro-USB available so I have to use adaptors to connect it to the USB-C devices I have) so what I did as a response to these claims is get a cable, make a dipole antenna out of it using two bits of kitchen foil, oriented it horizontally (what people tend to get wrong is that they put the antenna vertical which won't work for the main high power transmitters) and it worked! Picked up everything including the low powered HD multiplex, bearing in mind I am 35 miles away from the transmitter as the crow flies. Even managed to pick up that low powered multiplex using a different Labgear indoor antenna in the middle of town surrounded by apartments and buildings.

    That seams to be a thing in south Korea. Several years ago I worked as an app developer for a company in Berlin. We developed an app to be released in south Korea and we had phones from that market for testing. One of these Android phones (I think it was from LG) had a built in TV tuner. We always made fun of that thing. A phone with a pull out telescopic antenna that made you look like some weird 'phone home alien'. There was a preinstalled TV app. I would have loved to see that thing in action. Sadly it wasn't compatible with the digital TV system in Germany, so we couldn't pick up anything. It didn't support the local 2g/3g/4g frequencies either - only Wifi for us.

Got one of their USB TV tuner's one of the few with FM radio, I like to take it around with my laptop when I go places. Used it once I was sitting in a train station in Chicago waiting for a train an hour early still haven't quite figured out the train system. Found out my bowtie antenna stuck nicely to the magnets in the lid of my laptop. Only downside to using a phone you drain the battery in your communication device, much better to use a tablet.

Also there is a Fox station I don't get. The question is can I use this phone tuner to see the signal strength while I'm on the roof so I can slowly turn it to get the highest signal strength? Interesting device, unfortunately I'm using an iPhone. I have a question about RG6 Quad Shield Coax. I'm using a Channel Master copper coated steel center conductor and signals are just fine.

  • @ghz24

    @ghz24

    3 жыл бұрын

    At TV frequencies only the surface of the conductor is actually carrying the signal ( see skin effect). So the copper coating is virtually the same as solid but, the preamp may suffer from voltage drop if steel core wire is used. If no preamp then I'm pretty sure shouldn't matter. Having said that I'm using steel core coax and a ( cheap) preamp with no issues at 50 feet of coax.

If Apple was against external antennas, they wouldn’t have approved the SOUNDOT. As an iPhone user... I love the SOUNDOT fm earbuds... nice to have actual fm radio on iPhone. I’m fortunate I downloaded the app in time because now it has been taken down :( (the SOUNDOT was too unpopular). (Apple took out fm capability starting with iPhone 6)
