Turkey Canyon, Queen NM - EP 61

Trail riding OHV's in Lincoln National Forest, Guadalupe District near Queen, NM.
Day 2 saw us ride thru Turkey Canyon.
This was a great ride. Any stock SXS or 4-wheeler can ride it. A few fun sections to climb, a few rocky slow-going roads for a while but the majority was comfortable riding and awesome sightseeing. We took our time, stopped often and this trail took most of a day. Minimal shade options so when we did pass a large shade tree we stopped. Off the trail and riding Rd 504 ( Klondike Road ) back to base camp the wind was whipping up something fierce thru the valley and up the cliff side. I would imagine 50 mph or more. It was impressive.

great observation, LOL. yea they still tire bite when there fresh. this video was second day of trip so they were very happy to ride inside. If they jump out to tire bite, I usually motor on for a good while and let them run it out. Old school discipline. Thx for commenting.

Just wanted to say that I love what you do and that you’re looking very healthy. We got a chessie about 8 months ago and we are absolutely in love with him. His name is Ranger.

@@ChesapeakeBayProductions Ranger will explore all damn day. He’s become such a well behaved dog in public. But at home we are still working out some resource guarding issues. He will find something he’s not supposed to have and then get all shark eyed and nips at you if you try to take his thing. He fights you for it. Thankfully, he has never bitten me since he was 3 months old. But he growls and lunges at my wife when she tries to take something from him. He doesn’t do it so much anymore after training him for hours a day. But he still occasionally does it. If you have any advice, that would be great. I’m sure it just boils down to continuing to train him. But if you know of any specific methods that maybe I’m not aware of, I’m all ears.

@@bradlarrison191 O Man. I am no handler, just a guy with dogs. Ranger is still young but early habits can be lifelong. I used bagged popcorn as training incentive. Offering 1 or 3 pieces from my closed hand "after" a command. Sit/Stay/Lay Down/Come/Eat. Voice "OUCH" if the pup get's to aggressive or bites down on your hand to hurt when presenting. When they settle, up palm, Eat. I also expedited training with a 1'-0" long swimming pool noodle in my other hand for discipline help. A swat on the snout with noodle for bad behavior. I worked with dog's separately at first and eventually together. About 5 min. each pup a day for a month & together for a week. Done. And I ate popcorn during training too so great. I worked toy's the same way. Throw, they will of course retrieve, then your hand out, then command Drop. Pool noodle helps. FYI.....My Chessie's have always growled while playing, with a stick, tug-o-war rope, frisbee, tennis ball, each other or rough-housing with me. This is not a fear me or aggressive growl, this is how they are. Good luck

@@ChesapeakeBayProductions Thank you for those techniques! I’ll try them. About the aggression, it isn’t play. He does growl when we tug and wrestle. But this resource guarding is pure guarding aggression. He stiffens, does prolonged guttural growls, his eyes go black because his pupils get so big. I’ve seen him defend himself against nippy dogs and he usually just charges, growls and barks, nips the air, then backs away when the aggressor gets the point. But he’s a perfect gentleman around dogs and other humans unless a dog initiates aggression. So, I say all that to say I’ve learned his moods and his behavior fairly well. And this resource guarding is by far the most aggressive he ever gets. It’s almost rabid dog behavior but he’s not rabid. And usually I can get him to snap out of it by grabbing his collar and putting him between my legs and repeating my command “leave it” and he will drop it. But occasionally, just like literally what happened 10 minutes ago, he will grab something not his(today it was shaving razors just brought home from the store) and go full Cujo and I will have to push him to the ground and hold him there for the safety of my family and grab the leash. Once the leash is on him he obeys. I’m never aggressive with him. I just hold him in such a way he can’t bite or lunge. Hopefully with persistence he will eventually learn he just can’t grab whatever he wants and run off with it. He has dozens of toys that he doesn’t resource guard. It’s just found things like groceries we just brought home or a tv remote etc. Its bizarre because he’s the perfect dog otherwise. He’s good with kids and other animals. He treats our new kitten like it’s his own baby offspring. He so gentle. He just becomes demon possessed when he finds something not his.
