That side was darker because I'm sure the motor was laying on its side at the junk yard and the oil was flooded into that valve cover and probably sat that way for a long time... Just my guess

Apparently it has to do with the pcv, the fresh air gets sucked in the one side and the oily air goes out the other that's why the one side was a little crusty

If it froze it should of popped the freeze plugs to help prevent cracks and split age

Yeah unless like my mustang engine it got water down the intake into the cylinder then there's nowhere to go and bad thing happen haha

The driver side is darker cause its the pcv side…..passenger side is always cleaner on LS
