Tuning A Bass Guitar

Музыка

In this lesson (from the Bassic Fundamentals course) we look at the basics of how to tune the bass guitar. We match an open string to a reference pitch and then tune the bass to itself using the 5th fret and an open string.

as of earlier this month , I bought my very 1st bass guitar. Never played one b4. Never played guitar b4. This is all very new to me. Like learning a 2nd language. I was inspired to learn bass when u went_to a friends concert near where I live. I've almost always loved the sound, but_the thought of playing one, Just wasn't_there yet. Well, now it is. I'm just learning how to-tune-it. I've been watching bass videos for beginners for quite a while now, but until I could get an actual bass in my hands, & start learning to play, all the videos were just_that, videos. Now I can start putting videos like this to good use. I'll have lots questions as time goes on, while I'm learning.

@@skeletoneagle7886 I had forgotten I asked this question. A lot has changed in 3 years. 1st of all, I lost motivation to learn after I had to give up my bass lessons with an instructor I was working with, (ran out of money). Secondly, I really don't like the bass I have. It's "boring". (one of the things I learned from watching other videos of bass players. "if you really don't love the bass you're buying, you'll never want to play it"). I may have early signs of dementia. I'm 54 (my short term memory is very poor, due to sleep apnea & medications I take). Although my interest in learning still remains, & never wavered. I'm deeply in debt & save a small fixed income. Until I'm out of debt, (maybe 5 - 6 years), Nothing else matters. ¶ although, once in a great while, I have the urge to pick up my bass, put it in my lap, & pick the strings a little. ¶ I know the bass I really wanted, but buying a new one at $2000+ (at the time when I first saw it), just wasn't an option. ¶ I've had a lot of trouble understanding the basics & over time I've learned I'm very easily bored & lose focus. Learning an instrument for me will be Extra challenging, considering my current mental health. ¶ I know this was "long winded", but I wanted to tell you the truth.

hey mark, i want to learn more about bass playing to compose, be able to solo, improvise, etc. should i watch the music theory videos before the rest of your videos or should i go straight into chord progressions and all the more "practical" videos?

So this probably doesn't make any sense because I'm not educated in music theory and not even hardly a musician, but if I have a 3 string cigar box guitar tuned G, D, G, and I wanted to write a bass accompaniment for a song, wouldn't it be easier for me to do so if I tuned my 4 string bass to G, D, G, D?

I can tune it this way and using 5th frets and harmonics. The lazy git that I am I just use a TC Electronic polyphonic clip on tuner most of the time if not all of the time, worth every penny!

This is great but I use the 5th and 7th fret harmonic as long as the G string is in tune.

I can tune a guitar just fine but the bass just so hard to even tell cause the different plucking techniques and even then all the reference tuners all sound different

Don't make the same mistake I did, if you buy one from a music shop try it stood up with a strap, if theres neck dive put it back on the shelf (neck dive is when you let go of it then the head goes towards the floor)

For my first bass I wouldn't go over £300, in case u might not like playing it but don't go too low either, cos you don't want one that sounds like mud, that might put u off playing. Maybe as low as £180

As somebody who started with a $90 bass I second this. Also because the cheap ones break all the time, you do get good at fixing them though i guess haha
