Yes, it was. It’s best for the yarn to come from across the way rather than its own stitch.

was this a Rib edging? Knit1, purl1 ? ???

I'm very sorry about the huge delay in getting back to you. I'm hopeless with notifications - I only just saw your question. This particular case is a double knit, but the same applies to ribbing.
