Thank you, thank you! - I have tried and failed in the past and got a mate with a Rabaconda to do mine for me. Decided this time to beat the demon and do it myself. Followed your guide to the letter (used my own random tyre gel/lube). Took off an old Maxxis and fitted a brand new Tracker in 30 mins or so. Well pleased. The key was making 100% sure the beads were properly broken - I used a lever to push (well, lever) them in all the way round - once that was done I could get my lever under the bead and start the process (I could not before I'd done that, standing on the bead wasn't enough). After that was easy enough going. I used two good levers, and one spanner ;-) (just needed the spanner after the 1st two levers were on place to stop the bead popping back in after the initial bead removal, after that, two levers was happily enough for the job. Thank you mr Pindie.

Oh - and I used the new tyre to work on in place of an old car wheel, and the old tyre once it was off.

Hi Peter, I used new Tubliss rim tapes with these. I cleaned the rim with brake cleaner and then isopropyl alcohol before fitting them to a warmed, dry rim. It is really important to not stretch the tape as it goes onto the rim or it will undo when you pressurise the inner core. I loosely fit the tape squeezing it well into the gaps between spoke nipples as I go. Air pressure does the rest. I know people who use high quality duck tape/gorilla tape though with good results use two to three rounds though. I no longer use soapy water in the tyre. Loads of silicone spray inside the liner and inner core plus around the sealing lips of the liner. No issues at all so far. My original inner core tubes have lasted 275 hours!

Thanks, this is the best tubliss tyre change video out there. I have been using armour all but will switch to silicon spray as it seems easier. I also rubber grease the inner tube and liner near the rim lock where it kinks as I've had it rub through and a mates also. now zero issues. Thanks again.

Nice video but working with a used tire is like heaven compared to a brand new one haha. You're definitely quicker at this than I am for sure!

I love my tubliss system front n back on both my bikes!! I did use electrical tape the 2nd time and that bike doesn't seem to loose air pressure as bad if the bike sits awhile.. And that tire you took off looked brand new hope you don't throw them out lol

It was just a tyre swap from a Starcross 5 I was testing over to an MX51 for a race. When tyres are this easy to change I don't mind swapping/turning them often. I run them till the centre carcass between the knobs starts to hit the road. At low psi you still have loads of grip.

Excellent tutorial. Helpful tips and very efficiently done. Any thoughts on what you'd need to modify for changing a tire or fixing a flat out in the bush?

Nicely done. I wish my stock Shinko tires that came on my Xtrainer was so easy to work with. Mine are complete bastards, and fight the last amount of bead on/off. Can't wait for them to wear out so I can buy new ones.!! I also use the bicycle tire pump. Much easier an accurate than a compressor regulator.

What brand are those tire tools with the lipped end for installing the tire? I like that design.

  • @MrPindie

Yes. Soapy water works perfectly fine but so does lots of silicone. It's certainly drier.

Hi James, Did you use electrical tape on the rim ? In case did you use more than one round ? I found that the tape that comes with the set comes of easy when using a lot of soapy water on installation.

What tire irons do you use for this? I like those. They are way slimmer than mine. Thanks

I've never bothered about a flat on a ride. The Tubliss holds the beads in place on the front and rear wheel so you can still ride happily. If you did want to fix a holed tyre on the trail you need the goo strings and installation tool. You basically push the string into the hole and cut it off sealing the hole. It's a 2 minute job and no need to remove the wheel to do it.

Good video. You're obviously using soft sidewall tires. Try a using heavy/hard/desert tire. It is so much more difficult to keep from not pinching the inner liner; not to mention the degree of force and leverage required. Your method is sound however.

If the tire is hardened and dried out from having ridden a summer it is much more difficult.

Thanks for this - I'm changing mine for the first time tomorrow! I'm going to be mounting with soap and water - I see you use silicon spray. Does this make a difference? And are you putting any soapy water (or slime) in through the LP valve stem? Thanks!

I used to use the silicone but went back to just plain soapy water. It works the best and is ultimately the cleanest option. Carry plugs for leaks. Use more soapy water than recommended also, I added a third to a half more per wheel to what Nuetech say.

Hi Pindie, what tyre pressure do you run in the rear with Tubliss for a typical UK Hare and Hounds race?... ...also are you the same Pindie as on the KTM forums giving advice on jetting a KTM EXC 200? If so thank you very much. Gareth.

4+ psi. The sx5 has a flexible carcass so it needs air in it.

The Tubliss uses a rim lock as the valve, it's very different to a normal rim lock as it's hollow. If you are unlucky enough to suffer an inner core failure and the 360 degree seal is lost, the valve/rimlock keeps the tyre on the rim and the tyre from spinning. In 400 hours use I've not had an inner core failure though.

Thats interesting - I notice you don't use a rim tape to protect the inner bladder. Can you still run 0 psi like that? I thought the spokes would surely puncture the inner tube ? Good video

There’s a rim tape there. It’s the black pvc Tubliss one. Never try fitting without a rim tape.
