Tuba Skinny, The Full Last Set @ Esplanade de la Jetée @ Andernos, France, July 28th, 2019
Музыка
An amazing set in many ways. Never ever have you seen so many smiles on the faces of the members of this team of outstanding jazz performers - they were in the groove! And so were we!
Touring France July 2019, this is the last set of their three day stop-over, Sunday the 28th, in the wonderful little sea-side resort of Andernos-les-Bains, right west of Bordeaux, before their last performance in Paris. How lucky we were to be able to find this gem and being able to record this set in one go, leaving it uncut, for the audience as well as for those who couldn't make it. The generosity of the band is outstanding, free concerts and allowing us to record so close. This is just one version of this set, many cameras were running. Enjoy! Buying two sets of their CD recordings, was just a small token of our appreciation, compared to all the great work Tuba Skinny does shower us with. Quoted from Pops Coffee: "Michigander Blues: composed and recorded by Jabbo Smith, 1929. Stavin’ Chain: a Lil Johnson 12-bar song from 1937. Black Rag: allegedly composed by William Ridgley in 1925. But almost identical to 'Down Home Rag', composed by Wilbur Sweatman and L. Brown in 1911. Recorded by Celestin's Tuxedo Orchestra. I Need You By My Side: Recorded by Merline Johnson in 1937. Interestingly, played by Tuba Skinny in the key of G - a key avoided by most bands. A Jazz Battle: Composed and recorded by Jabbo Smith, 1929. It’s on Tuba Skinny’s 2018 album ‘Nigel's Dream’. A tune in F minor. Rock Me: composed by Thomas A. Dorsey in 1936. It is on Tuba Skinny’s early album ‘Tuba Skinny’. Garbage Man Blues: Also known as ‘Call of the Freaks’. This is on Tuba Skinny’s album ‘Garbage Man’. For background info on this tune: playing-traditional-jazz.blogs... ."
Shaye Cohn, leader, cornet, vocals; Craig Flory, clarinet, vocals; Barnabus Jones, trombone, vocals; Erika Lewis, drums, vocals; Max Bien Kahn, guitar, banjo, vocals; Jason Lawrence, banjo, guitar, vocals; Todd Burdick, sousaphone. Videographed with a hand-held SONY HandyCam, FDR-AX100, in FH quality mode, at times in battle with a cluster of microphones and their stands.

Whoa ! One helluva band .. tight, hot, harmonious as an ensemble - absolutely in top form; each and every one of them playing brilliantly ... and they can feel it, they're having a ball ! A joyous, triumphal return to Andernos in this their 10th anniversary year. I could point out something superb for each of them, but one has to tip a hat to Shaye Cohn - her cornet is exquisite (and she's using that cup mute with such perfect effect) and she steers them through each arrangement so neatly. My thanks CANDCJ for a wonderfully captured video/audio, and for adding Pops Coffee's fine documentation. Yes, I missed Greg Sherman - guitar & vocals, and Robin Rapuzzi's washboard .. but they were playing so over the top ... ! We're bringing them into Philadelphia a month from now and I can't wait for the music and these great talented and generous people.

Wow, I'm hooked on this band! Thank you, KZread algorithms, for recommending this band to me!
Without question, the greatest traditional jazz band in existence today, and possibly EVER. King Oliver himself would be amazed.

WOW MAKE UP !
These people were born to make music , and they are so bloody good at it !!
You just can’t stop listening to them real music
Such a lilting, danceable rhythm . They all play so well - so "tasty" - "listening" to each other - as professionals do . I LOVE these people - they are so delightful - in an age where there is little "delightfulness" in music .

Glorious music This is the best group I have ever heard......please come to UK.
Shaye and Erika two beautiful young ladies that super impress me with their musical talents with the Trumpet and Voice plus the boys in the band are also super musicians and know their stuff - come back to the USA safe and sound and ready to do more music in your home town
I am so envious of the trumpet player I bought one, I’m 83 yrs old I believe I will play anything close to that gorgeous woman but going to learn

Sublime as ever. There is so much complexity in their music but never a fumble or a filler. Their repertoire knows no bounds.
Tuba Skinny...my drug of choice, at least one to be taken every day, more if required and it usually is😁
i absolutely cannot believe that there is a human out there who could not feel like they are in some strange and wonderful place when they listen to this band...whats the name of the first tune..absolutely perfect.

WOW Never Better
so awesome i watched it through twice..
I have written it before: This great band sounds like the old Masters I lay abed listening to in 1940, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45,46, and beyond way up into and through "modern jazz" with Dave Brubeck! Great original, old time jazz sound.
'"In the groove" is right! Blowin' red hot. Thank goodness these sets are now preserved for ever.
My favorite musical group by far!
They are all such individual talents. I love you all !
Bravo Shaye !!!!! You are really brilliant. Thank you
Natural people....great abilities...thank you for the real thing!
🇬🇧 My favourite band!
molto marvellosos et brillantinerami mit excellensos musicale triumfoerissima
Fantastic band in the tradition of the classic New Oleans bands. Keep up the good work guys and girls. Love You all
Wonderful jazz session which the late Ken Colyer might have used the word "symphonic" about (as he did on a 1972 recording of Canal Street Blues). The 'Skinnys' were tight and the cross melodic improvisations and understandings between were almost of magical syncopated perfection. Lets hear it too for the videography of CANDCJ-much the best filmed capture of the 'Skinnys' I have seen so far. No camera judder and some very special close-ups. Epic capture all round.

Hi Mr John Hills, always nice reading your commentaries. By the way, did you go to New Orleans in 2000, for the French Quarter Festival, with the Ken Colyer Trust? We were in a group of 140 aficionados, most of them from the UK. It was a smashing experience from all points of view. And we were hooked.

Simply fantastic. Thank you all, Tuba Skinny!
I love everything TS does, but this version of Stavin' Chain absolutely blows me away. The best they've ever done it, IMHO
What a GREAT set! The fastest, hottest Jazz Battle I've ever heard...
Oh yes! Erika doing 'plain voice'(w/o intonation or inflection), and the multi-instrumental Shaye Cohn to guide the changes. Incredible!
Thank you CANDCJ !

They're so good they're unbelivable!
Bliss! Nearly as good as being there!
Superb in every way. They are an outrageously talented band. They also really enjoy their music and this enthusiasm transfers to their audience wherever they play.

how nice ... Shaye's memory of her "Bicycle -Tour de France" 10 years ago as street musicians ... ;-) ... Tuba Skinny on top, bravo ! Thanks a lot CANDCJ for the video from the enchanting Andernos / Gironde !
very good music
Agradezco a la vida haber visited a New Orleans y disfrutar de toda esta juventud que tocan musica de 80/90 anios y con una dulzura y precision que asombra. Gracias muchachos por todo lo que nos regalan. Dios Los bendiga
Amazing is the only way to describe Tuba skinny. You can see how Shay and Erika just seem to float when they perform.
The talent!! Each musician could stand on their own abilities. How lucky we are they are all together in one amazing group.
Angry! Angry! Angry! This Tuba Band Skinny show loves that drum, (vocal) the horn is played or the trumpet girl who makes the mark and sometimes plays the piano. Bravo very beautiful !!!
Amazingly talented musicians and singer.
By far the best New Orleans band playing jazz the right way. Just wish they would play Chicago someday. They would be great at our annual jazz festival on the lake.
Just love the way Erica Shades the beat (lags a bit) That's pure jazz and I doubtt it can be taught but needs to just be felt

I so love watching that cornet get played that it makes me want to learn how but then I remember I'm old and have no breath so I guess I'll just keep watching and listening. It's a shame more music isn't watchable as that gives music context and identifies who is making the beautiful music.
Swingt de pan uit !!!!! Heerlijk.
WOW, watta raid!
Thank guys this is music great voices musicians who play from the heart

CANDCJ ... Thanks for the video..Perfekt! shown length without cut
Superb quality video! And what a performance from the band . They are smokin for the whole set. Never sounded better.
Erika Lewis is one of the few musicians (or women of any description) who get to sit on their instrument while playing it. What a captivating voice she has. Dead pan expression is so perfect.
Going to New Orleans November 14 - 22 Hope to see them ! Won't have my tuba though...
Again they contributed to my happiness!... Incredibly talented and coordinated, this is a true BAND - all focused, competent and enjoying their fine art. Again, Shaye’s right leg is the rythm master, setting the mode and preparing us for the tuned-up enjoyment.
Cant beat New orleans Jazz . I love tuba skinny . I also love the old new orleans . Played by pete fountain and al hirt .
fabulous !! listen for the key change in the second song after craig's clarinet really kicks it into gear... bliss !!
While busking TS videos are so much fun--dogs wandering through the players, dancers gyrating in front--it is unalloyed joy to have a video of this quality. We can see the players so well, and the audio is superb. While I've never seen a disappointing TS video, this one is a gem. PS: the encore gives Todd a chance to play an extraordinary solo.

@@stewartfenton7660 yes, yes! The camera work here is sometimes a bit giddy, but that's because CANDCJ are trying so hard to give us great closeups of band members. And while I regret the absence of Robin and Craig, what cannot be denied is the great affection Tuba Skinny has for Andernos. That little town, I've heard, won the hearts of band members on an early busking tour that had some low points. TS and Shaye love Andernos, and this lovely set is their valentine to a city that helped them become what they now are.

@@stevegrooms1142 I even get a feeling of "Elvis has left the building" at the end, the audience seems to be sitting there thinking "have they really gone?" I wasn't fully aware of the story behind this concert, but yes, it's the only time I've heard Shaye say anything like that. And the camerawork is noticeably good, I think C&CJ may be unnecessarily working to counter some unkind comments they've received. I tend to feel grateful to be able to sit here doing nothing, reaping the benefits of other people's efforts.

@@stevegrooms1142 I love that Pismo Beach concert too, though never have caught up with all of it. "Over in the Glory Land" is a favourite for me, especially the moment when Shaye(that woman again) cuts in with her solo. Just for you Steve, I've just watched "How do they do it that way" 3or4 times, and it's noticeable that Robin credits Shaye, they don't do a lot of that. Her solo on this reminds me of Satch, me not being a knowledgeable historian or musician, however. But I find there's always another great performance with this band, it's just endless with all the songs and versions thereof that are out there. I could never have an ultimate favourite, there's always a new one to listen to.

@@stewartfenton7660 thanks for the great comment. An issue that fascinates me about Shaye is how a classical pianist found her way to the cornet, an introvert playing an extrovert's instrument. Louie Armstrong was a stud extrovert playing an extrovert's instrument, and he revels in showing off his high notes. Shaye plays more like Bix (another introvert) with many gorgeous notes in fascinating patterns, not strident and assertive. There are exceptions. When Shaye and the band marched to start the American Folklore Festival (Bangor Maine, 2000) she couldn't use mutes, and she really cuts loose. God, I love that woman.
Ointment for the eyes and ears....they’re tops in my book....
Thanks for your time and effort, the audio and video is broadcast quality
Wow ! One of the best sessions I've heard from this group . I agree with CANDACEJ ( above) .
