    Seth, I just wanted to say how helpful your podcasts were to my transition from Catholicism to Atheism.     9 years later... but ... Because everyone pays taxes to school districts. Only members of religious groups pay tithes. Religious people have a claim on schools (right or wrong) because they are forced to pay taxes to a government school.

    I went to a pentecostle church one time. I was very confused when they started speaking in tongues, I thought it looked fun so I started imitating Donnie from the Wild Thornberrys and everyone thought God had entered me LOL. These people are so deluded. I was 10 mind you.

    "He's a man of faith." That's something that scares the shit out of me when it comes to politicians, riding on that phrase like it's a good thing. How do I know that your faith isn't just schizophrenia? How can I be sure that the voices in your head are actually the voices of a higher power, and not just mental illness or personal arrogance? You have your thumb on the button...and I can't hear the voices in YOUR head...how do I know for SURE that you're not just a greedy sumbitch who wants nothing better than to see the world burn? The faithful really make my nervous.

    Regarding the statements made at 21:26 This is why, as an African American male, I agree with fundamentalist evangelicals when they say _”America was founded as a Christian nation.”_ *Founded on Hypocrisy and double standards* _”We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness…”_ 41 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were slave owners. Some of them became president, owning slaves while sitting in the white house. Though somebody’s plan backfired, that whole _”freedom, liberty, rights and happiness”_ thing *was not originally meant for black people.* Looks like Christianity to me.

    It's easy to show why "speaking in tongues" is rubbish. Because nothing ever came out of it. If a god would speak "in tongues" and convey a message, then the knowledge would be absolute astounding, and we would see those Christians be the most perfect human beings, with absolute wisdom and knowledge. But instead we get Ken Hem with his "If Noah’s flood were true you would expect to find millions of dead things buried in rock layers laid down by water all over the earth, and what do we actually see in the fossil record? Millions of dead things buried in rock layers laid down by water all over the earth!" - Except that the fossils are sorted by geologic layers exactly the way evolution have predicted.

    No, the simplest way to debunk speaking in tongues is that it's gibberish. If someone wants to speak with me, he speaks in a language I understand, so as to get the message or point he's making across. If God really were making people speak in tongues, then he's a fucking idiot, because I don't understand a single syllable of what I'm hearing. If there is a message in there, I don't understand it.

    It is common for intense study of the Bible and Christian history to leave the student no choice but to leave. I remember reading The History of Christianity and thinking that there is no way this is the history of the Church.

    Whilst in Asia, I met someone who was once a former student of WLC, and aspires to be a Biblical apologist. The amount of indoctrination he had undergone was a tad frightening, being able to disassociate himself from reality so readily.

    When I get asked 'what evidence will it take to believe?' I have a simple answer: Find the Garden of Eden where the angel waits at the entrance with a spinning sword. I see that and I'll believe.

    Try the YMCA summer camps. It's three fucking months of God. You start the day with prayer, you sing lots of trite God worship songs, then they finally let you out to have fun and play with other kids, but everything is so oppressively monitored and controlled to the extent that you can't even talk to other kids about your own interests, like Pokemon. As a child of the 90's, this seemed so ridiculous to me. I just wanted to share with my peers what my interests were, but apparently secular interests weren't on the docket. And it was expensive. Such a waste of the best times of my childhood.

    It is odd that any believer would even try to dodge the "extraordinary" label being put on their god claims since they are amazed themselves and think we should also be amazed at the awesome and very not average/mundane/ordinary things that their alleged god can do. Why the heck worship a being that can't outperform the average human being anyway? So, when theists ask, I define "extraordinary" as that which is above average/mundane/ordinary. Gods are claimed to do things that are as extraordinary it gets. Otherwise, why call it a god in the first place? Defining "extraordinary" this way, I find that I don't have any problem in getting theists to admit that resurrections, and virgin births are claims of extraordinary properties, because otherwise their god is just ordinary, not impressive or worshipable in any way, and they do so desperately want us to be impressed with their alleged god's alleged abilities.

    I've never attended Christian Summer Camp when I was a boy. I've heard of that sort of thing, but I've never attended. If there were Camp Quest camps in Washington state where I'm from, I'd have attended.

Look up Richard Madsen Skylar Fiction / Modern Day Debate / The Raging Atheist and you will find the beginnings of descriptions of why I do not have to deny any of the following; Science, secular morality, philosophy, personal and group experience, other ancient religions validity nor any part of provable reality.... and I can express why.

    After decades in the church, when I first had the realization that I didn't believe in bible god; I downloaded a book by John Loftus to my kindle and devoured it. That was an amazing experience for me. It was every bit as powerful as when I got "saved." And to the "you don't understand the bible" crowd - I challenge you to a test of knowledge of the bible. I taught Sunday school and other bible studies. I used to play bible knowledge games with ordained ministers and seminary students and always finished at or near the top. It's my deep knowledge of the bible that was instrumental in my leaving Christianity.

    I remember how dumb I felt when finding out that the apostles were not the authors of the gospels. Not only are they anonymous, but they were demonstrably not eye witnesses to what they are reporting notwithstanding who they might be. Really, the beginning of the end for me.

    To John W. Lofton As a believer my life does meaning. I do inquire and question. My views have radically changed in the 30 plus years since I became a Christian. Unlike some of the fundamentalists I sometimes argue with I do not consider the Bible as the Literal inerrant Word of God. I recognize the "bad" parts of the Bible and don't try to gloss over them. I do and have had a fulfilling life , and unlike the portrait some atheists like to paint when presented with evidence we do change our views( I no longer believe in Hades. I no longer believe the Bible comndemmes the LGBT community, the age of accountability, and have doubts about the Rapture.) Had I not accepted Christ, I have no doubt that I would be dead or in a very bad place now. Even after a major crisis of faith, I have no regrets. However if there was a real life "Davinchi Code" event, I would take a long hard look at my relationship with God. Keep watching!

    ***** Religion is rooted in ritual and doctrine, not necessarily in "faith" (a very broad term in itself, too). Some religions are rooted in faith, but that is not a prerequisite for religion in general. There are certain metaphysical ideas that have some merit to them in a logical sense, like the idea of a deistic God or some kind of "force". It's not intellectually honest to say "religious scientist" is an oxymoron. History disproves that notion. Also, try not to argue that in the mindset of a scientist, religion and science are separate, because that is demonstrably not true. They are constantly in flux - see one Charles Darwin and one Newton for examples on different results.

    ***** You're making assumptions you can only potentially justify case by case. Are you going to say Francis Collins is lying out of social pressure? Why and how can you justify that? Equally, Newton was considered a heretic for some of his religious beliefs. It seems he had no qualms about opposing the church on certain doctrines, going so far as to dabble in the occult. Your mindset is too dualistic to consider this reality that religion and science have a close relationship - not necessarily a non-hostile one, and not precisely on the validity of claims but rather on the influence they have on people and on themselves as systems. This is why I gave Charles Darwin as an example - he lost faith in his religious doctrines and rituals due to his scientific discoveries. If, in the mind of a scientist, religion and science had no connection, then one would not be able to influence or inform the other. The fact of the matter is that both religion and science are different takes on the same reality of our existence, and while some may use one to counter or suppress the other, they are both types of social and intellectual mentalities that are unlikely to be walled out from each other or to ever be rooted out of our psyche. In case you are wondering, I am an atheist and I oppose the adversity of religion. However, I don't support the notion that science and religion cannot co-exist.

    Okay so, as much as I am against Christianity, particularly the fundamentalist strains, and as much as I understand the frustration, isn't it somewhat hypocritical to say that women "shouldn't" believe in Christianity/the bible? They have a choice to make for themselves and of that choice happens to be to be a devout Christian, it shouldn't be up to anyone else to tell them that they "shouldn't" make that choice.

    Sure women can believe in Christianity all they want but it wouldn't make sense because biblical Christianity treats women horribly. There's modern day inequalities as well even though they aren't as terrible as biblical Christianity. No one is choosing for them, it's just that we're pointing out why should women believe in something that treats them terribly?

    @cameron yu (can't reply on my phone, sorry) Sure, I get the point being made, of course, but literally anyone, of they want to believe the bible, has to pick and chose and to gloss over parts they find repellent. Even the WBBC aren't going out stoning people for working on Sundays, even Ken Ham et al aren't killing disrespectful children. Everyone has to pick and chose or interpret parts of the bible in more favourable lights, why should it be surprising that women are able to pick and chose a little bit more? That position is no less contradictory than that of the average bible-believing Christian- it's a quantitative difference not a qualitative one. And of course I recognise that he doesn't actually want to force women not to believe in the bible, but the manner in which he was talking about women specifically oh were Christians seemed somewhat condescending to me. I don't understand really why *anyone* would want to be a Christian, but that incredulity is no greater for women than it is for men.

    The very fact that you have to try hard to find the better parts about the bible might mean that there are more worse things than good things. History is certainly bloody. You can't simply ignore parts of the bible's history you don't like. Some of it probably did happen whether we like it or not. It's probable and nearly certain than it was worse for women than it was for men. Women trying to find good things in the bible are like how some women today try to find good things in their asshole husbands or boyfriends because they have low self-esteem.

    There is an extremely rare condition where a virgin can give birth. I don't think this was the case with Jesus but it is theoretically possible

    No, I have to agree with #theclipreaper because I don't have a lot of time to be on this laptop. I do not mind admitting I am a visual person and shorter, visual presentations are more effective for sharing also. I am not on here for entertainment and that was a bitchy comment, #koltrasrip.

    One of my favorite personal stories, was a man I was visiting quite often, mainly because he was a scientist / biologist and never believed in God. We talked often about Science, and often about religion. He told me he was never afraid to die, and by science, everything has a lifespan in which it returns to the earth from which it came, and thus is the process of the circle of life. Understandable, he had devoted 50 years of his life to his research, and although I would talk about Jesus and God randomly with him, he always shrugged away from the topic. I came back to the hospital a month later to investigate another patient, when I was told by a nurse that the Scientist wanted to speak with me. I went into his room, and when he saw me, his eyes flared up in desperation. He went on to tell me that two weeks ago, he had a stroke, and was dying. When he was dying he had a vision, in which he could see his own mother and father smiling at him, and behind them, and older man with a warm smile. He told me he recongnized the old man, to which I responded..... Uncle ?, Grandfather ?. He just looked at me, shook his head, and reponded with, Jesus, that he had a picture when he was just a boy in his room of Jesus, and it looked exactly similar to that picture I couldn't believe it. Since this man was not religious in any sense, and devoted his life to science, but for the first time he told me he was actually afraid of dying, and confront an entity which he spent his life trying to de-bunk. And it was the first time he asked me, still very hesitant, about the Bible, and the exact teachings of Jesus.

    @@barkYdarkATFB My grandmother said that Jesus told her she was going home before she died. I've not only witnessed deathbed visions, but also family members that had premonitions of a loved one's death that happened shortly after their dream, and family that knew a loved one had died either telepathically or by seeing an apparition of the deceased before they were notified. No one knows what exactly happens until they die or transitions from this realm to the next. I prefer to believe that we came from something rather than nothing. The more science tries to figure out the universe the more complicated it becomes, and that is why they will never be able to disprove God. Our Creator meant to keep it that way.

    @Veda Slayton my grandmother thought birds were flying in the house. And, what you prefer to believe isn’t evidence of what is true. BTW, science doesn’t try to “disprove god”. It just so happens that with every discovery, every understanding of a fact, every breakthrough, the notion of a god diminishes. Again, your original story is completely made up.

    That's true. I've read it too. It just shows how little the anti-abortion Christians know about the Bible. The Bible is a paperweight in most Christian homes gathering dust on the shelf, but the nonreligious have actually read it and understand it.

    Many atheists celebrate Christmas because we enjoy family and friends as much as religious people do. The difference is we don't inject god and jesus into the equation. You can pray whenever you want to at home and be as loud as you want in church even though it doesn't work. Theists are busier than atheists as we aren't building churches and trying to influence every part of society with false promises.

    People forget or just don't realize... Christianity was always persecuted... Jesus clearly says.. This world hated him, and will hate those also who support him.. But This world will love those who are of this world.. Which is the prince of this world.. As a Christian I feel peace when I remind myself of Jesus words. One just has to read the gospels and focus on Jesus teachings and parables that's the most important thing.. Once you do you realise it all. Atheism, Judaism, Islam, is all the same.. They don't believe in Jesus the Christ in some way. Just look in that way how it aligns with what Jesus said about the narrow path of those who are saved and when people are taken up when it's time

    +Herakles It is highly unlikely that the words you read in the gospels are in fact the words of jesus but it is far more likely that they are stories about a character that people talked about and embellished over the decades before the educated Greek writers wrote the gospels long long after the supposed events. Scholars know that the sermon on the mount could not have been words of jesus as it refers to the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. The first gospel the bishops later titled Mark ends in the oldest versions with the women being afraid at the tomb and running away, not telling anyone what they saw. If that were the case, no one would know anything about the event much less be able to write a story about it. Then the gospel titled Matthew embellishes Mark and Luke embellishes Matthew and finally John just goes wild with embellishment of the story. There are many contradictions and none are written in the first person. They are made up stories. BTW muslims do venerate jesus in the Koran. They thought he was a prophet, just not the last one. LOL

    Thank you Mr. Loftus. I have read all of your books (save one) . I just purchased your newest one and can say that my faith in Christ and the bible have been strengthened because of them. By researching scripture deeper and putting the bible to the test I appreciate His Word even more. I will say you do have a strong bias toward Christianity. You are very bitter. It is sad. I have been saved close to 40 years now and have seen my brothers and sisters in Christ doing great things in the Lord. You will always have a bad apple here or there no matter what group of people you are dealing with whether it is Hindu's, co- workers, neighbors, atheists, customers, Christians, etc.I agree completely with Dinesh D'Souza. You will not get an argument from me on some of the things that have been done in the name of Christ such as the Inquisition. But remember. Most of the people killed by the roman catholic church were bible believing Christians. As far as the Crusades go much of it was political and not doctrinal. Much of your fighting today can likewise be attributed to political differences and not theological ones (catholics/ protestants in Ireland).They are not attacking each other over transubstantiation and soteriological differences. The Jesus of the bible never tells any of His followers to attack people physically.When people have done so in the name of Christ they have done so by misrepresentation. The fault lies with the individual not the scriptures. Remember that atheistic leaders have killed far more .The immediate argument I get from atheists is that people like Lenin and Stalin didn't kill in the name of atheism which may very well be true but I will guarantee that had they been genuine Christians they would not have killed at all. The same can be said of the bad popes or any other person in Christendom that used Christ as their means to justify their sinful action. I agree with you that atheists can be moral. There are good atheists and bad atheists. The same can be said of all people. But if you are honest you must admit that atheistic ideas can lead a person to do deplorable acts since they could use their power to do evil and feel they don't have anyone to answer to in the next life (since atheists believe there is no God and no afterlife). Such was the case with Lenin and Stalin.

    Randy Pacchioli All of us are imperfect human beings. Look if you want to take a self deprecating view of yourself and put yourself down for things out of your control, you have every right to. I just don't accept that kind of cultist mindset that we are born broken. It is a sickness, and depressing view of life. The only person who can save you is yourself. Grow up and take responsibility for your own actions and stop using a scapegoat to free yourself from your personal obligations to be a decent human being.
