TTA Performance - 2004R Overdrive Conversion

In this video, I show you how I convert a TH350 to a 2004R automatic overdrive in a customer's 1980 Turbo Trans Am pace car.
Follow up video here showing the how the lock up was installed and RPM at speed with the 3.42 gears:

Great video . I put a 200r4 in my 1967 GTO with 400 motor and 3.73 gears. I never got the lock up convertor sorted out so I just unhooked it. It shifts and drives fine.

Very good video on the 2004R trans. I have thought many times of doing that conversion on my 461 ci 81 TA pace car. I have done a lot of research with big cubic inches engines destroying the 2004R due to big torque and many guys have had great success. I currently have a built turbo 350 that so far has held up to the torque of the 461. Works well with the 3.08 rear gears. For the most part it’s fine for cruising on the country roads but occasionally I get on the freeway and a overdrive would be nice for 70 -75 mph cruising with traffic. 👍

Joe, this was outstanding and thank you for covering the functional aspects of the Rallye shifter. That's not terribly common knowledge nowadays. Bummer that the ratcheting feature is lost when moving to the 2004R plate and good reminder that there aftermarket alternatives. It'd be fun if a Hurst Dual Gate or better yet, a Lightening Rod were available.

Really enjoying watching these videos my first car was a 1976 455 4 Speed Trans Am My Dad had gotten brand new my oldest brother drove for a year and my drove until I got my DL the car was so much fun I still Love the The Trans Ams for my graduation my Dad got me a 1982 Z28 Maroon Really Good l looking car first year 3rd generation I had always wanted another T/A but 82’ the first time I saw the Z28 as a better looking then the 82’T/A it’s funny on this video you were talking about the Metric 200 Transmission that was in my Z28 with a very weak 305 V8 that metric transmission was as bad as the 305 it had plastic parts I remember first time I had to have rebuilt there was a law suit against GM over that Plastic Transmission should have had one also for that 305 not long after having that drove a 243 v6 not sure about that number but that v6 had so much more guys then 305 V8 had but the 82 Z28 Handling was a big improvement from the 2nd generation Cars

Just did this 2004R conversion on my 80 TTA, and I love it. Also swapped out the 3.08 rear end gears to 3:73 gears. Runs at 1800RPM at 60MPH with TC lockup. The question I have is regarding the shifter itself. It is very sloppy when in OD and D. I pulled the center console bezel and can see the shift latch mechanism stop in each gate of the new shiftworks plate, but there is no firm detent holding it, so it can be moved the width of the gate for each gear position without pushing the shifter button. There are small reliefs in each gate, that I assumed were the detents, but they are too narrow for the shifter button mechanism to detent into. I assume with the original plate that the detent was achieved by the ratchet mechanism. I was thinking about removing the shiftworks plate and filing out the small reliefs so that the shifter mechanism locks into them. Did you have the same issue?

I've been wondering when you were going to do this. Any particular reason why you don't want to go with a 3.73 vs. a 3.42? I know these engines don't rev really high, but it also seems like you might be able to sidestep some of the lag with a lower ratio.

Can you give more details on what you mean by can't find reverse? TV cable and lock up wires shouldn't matter. It should at least engage reverse. Are you saying you can't find reverse with the shifter?

@@impala-wf2sd I would recommend disconnecting your shifter linkage first and see if you can shift just the transmission from under the car and engage reverse.
