1972 C10 - 700R4 Installation - Part 1

This video shows the physical conversion of a TH350 transmission to a TH700R4 overdrive transmission in a 1972 Chevy C10 long bed pickup. The salvage yard 700R4 transmission I used for this video was not as good as advertised, and is currently being rebuilt. I will cover some details of the shifter linkage, and TV cable connections in the second part, once the transmission is back in the truck.

Thanks for great video. Props on camera positioning lighting and just overall editing alot of videos are just frustrating to follow for beginners to get a good understanding I find alot of content creators forget its not just about going threw the steps as much as how you explain it to a novice so they feel confident in actually attempting it themselves. Definitely earned a new subscriber...

Thanks for posting this. My '71 C10 already has a 700R4 but it was cool to see what it takes to put it in. I'm looking forward to the Part 2 video as the PO mickey moused a bunch of stuff and I don't think the trans is set up right. I think I blew the trans yesterday so I'm looking at a rebuild and then getting it set up correctly. I don't think the lock up was ever set up on it.

Thanks Rick. I just got the transmission back and re-installed into the truck. Now I just need some dry streets so I can get it out drive it. My plan for part 2, is to cover how I setup the TV cable. I've setup 2 other 700R4's, but the guy who rebuilt the transmission has given me some new advice on the setup. I will also cover the way I engage/disengage the torque converter lockup.

Thanks for this video, very pertinent information. I am planning to do the exact swap on my 72 Cheyenne. Did the swap from a pulse sending unit to a gear driven speedometer come as a kit or did you purchase the components separately ? If a kit, where did you purchase from ? What information did you need to determine correct gears, reared ratio, tire size, or ? Thank you very much in advance

@genequesinberry5933 Thanks for watching the video. To address your questions; I didn't get a kit, but that is not to say they aren't available. I got the speedometer parts on Amazon, from the "LA Speedometer Gear" store. All of the parts I have gotten from them have been perfect fit and cannot distinguish them from original GM. As for knowing what gears to get, I use a gear calculator on a transmission parts web site. This is also a great place to get parts, but I get the free shipping on Amazon. transmissioncenter.net/shop/speedometer-gear-calculator/

Hey there, do you know what the drop is on your truck? As far as inches in front and back? Or product for that matter? Sits very nice. Thanks!

The drop in the front is 3". 2" drop spindles, and 1" drop springs. The back is a 5" drop springs. I used a kit from Classic Performance Products. Here is a link to my web site documenting the changes. www.murfjunction.com/pages/c10_pickup/lowering.html

@@MurfJunction you caught me right as I was watching some c10 KZread videos :) I do feel like I see 5/3, 6/4, and even 7/5 drops on these trucks and honestly thought yours would have been more than a 5/3 drop…but as a guy would say, “I got to because I’m looking right at it”. Thanks for the info. I was planning to put a lower drop on it including spindles but maybe this gets me to start with 5/3 and add more if it doesn’t sit to my liking. I also feel like truck to truck, the way it sits can differ.

@@stephenvanvliet9812 I think the wheel and tire combination can make a difference in the look as well. I put the same drop kit on my cousins 72, but he used 18" wheels with lower profile tires, but it looks taller than mine.

@@MurfJunction That’s a great point. Sorry if I missed it but what is the combination on this truck? I believe mine are the 15x8 rally’s and I’d like to keep it that way

@@stephenvanvliet9812 I am running 15x8 rally's as well, and I believe with 4" backspacing. With the drop spindle, the rim is a tight fit to the bottom control arm. I had to clearance the brake dust shield, and have the wheels balanced without edge weights. FYI, my tires are P245/60R15. That is approx. a 26" diameter.

Did the speedo Cable work without any modifications?

  • @MurfJunction

Yes. The cable reached without any issue. The location was just slightly further than on the TH350, but it just made it a slightly tighter bend, but no binding.
