I was living with and taking care of my senior parents at the time, in Northridge. I think we saw it on the TV news, sitting in the kitchen. My cousin and his wife were visiting from Maui and we planned to go to Los Torros Mexican Restaurant that night for dinner, not far from the crash site. Instead, I think I got some prepared food at the local market, which unknown to us at the time, was a lucky decision. Had we actually gotten into the car at about 4:00 p.m., we would've wound up in the massive traffic jam in the area, just as the crash was happening. Los Torros sent food to all the first responders at the crash site, so you know the kitchen was fully preoccupied with doing that. I've often wondered what that night was like for everyone stuck at the restaurant who couldn't leave for several hours!
This also shows why you don't text and drive. Also the engineer, Sanchez was warned 2 times prior to the accident for using his phone inappropriately while on duty.

I seen the video of the collision but it has since been taken down UP comes in the siding METROLINK spads the signal UP hits him passengers and crew killed. This is why we need PTC.
Most people usually overlook the whole Metrolink consist other than 855, which goes as follows: 185 - Later Welded Coach bought in a 27-Coach Order (183 to 210) to prevent shortages. Was telescoped in the accident, leaving nothing but a shredded frame. Total loss. 207 - Another Welded Coach. Stayed on the rails and only suffered minor damage. Was repaired, and is still in service as of this day. 617 - Also stayed on the rails with minor damage, repaired, but soon retired after being replaced by the Ugly Rotem Cab Cars. It's Bell is now on display as a memory of the crash, and the car itself is said to be sitting in storage in an unknown, out of sight location. It will presumably either be converted into a Blind Coach or scrapped. Also, I noticed that during the Simulation, the Metrolink Cab Car changed numbers. In the first shot, it was 632, but then in the other shots, it was 631.

Insane that you couldn't figure out that cell phones and megaton trains are a bad idea, except in emergencies.
On the simulation of the UP local, I counted 20 freight cars instead of 17.

Sad, I still remember this. It was breaking news at 430p on ABC 7 that day like 25 Dead Rip victims of crash of SCRAX Metrolink 111 Ventura county line Sadly last journey for Metrolink F49PH 855 it was beyond repair and scrapped. Every time you hear a Metrolink horn. Take a moment to remember the loss. Rest in peace 111.
On September 12th, 2008, Metrolink Train 111 collided head-on with a Union Pacific Freight Train at 4:22 p.m. and 23 seconds just outside of Chatsworth, California before sunset and midnight, 25 were killed in the collision and 135 were involving injured the crash collision. In the end, 2 Union Pacific SD70ACE locomotives 8485 and 8491 and Metrolink F59PH locomotive 855 met their faith under the scrapper's toruch.
i was 11 years old living in Palmdale at the time watching it on the news with my mom then the next year in 2009 I took the metrolink for the first time and I was terrified because of what happened in Chatsworth
I remember seeing this on the news when I was three years old.
Most awesome vid!!!!
I respected Sanchez being a fan of us railfanners, but I think he was just too nice. Well maybe not the word I'm looking for but he should've at least texted the fanners when he was stopped. Not while the train was in motion. He probably would've got away with it. RIP to everyone that passed away in the crash.
