Trying Ube in the Philippines | The World's Most Colorful Root Veg

Dig into the rich history and flavors of Ube, the world's most colorful root veg. In this video I'll be taking you on a journey around Manila, the capital of the Philippines, as I explore Ube in a bunch of different forms. I'll be trying Ube from hole in the wall bakeries and home kitchens to modern interpretations. By doing so, I’ll hopefully answer the question: "what on Earth is Ube?" Coz, it might be familiar to those in the Philippines, but perhaps not the rest of the world! Whether you're a food enthusiast or simply curious about Filipino culture, this video offers a great intro to a slice of South East Asian food heritage.
Keen on getting some Ube Halaya, head to Aling Rose's:

@@FirstPiper No. We wanna thank you for actually doing proper research about ube. I've watched a couple of videos about ube and how the world reacts to it and I was so disappointed with some Filipino Americans introducing purple sweet potato as ube to the foreigners lol. And to think that you as a non Filipino person did this is really to be appreciated.

In 1st grade (1991), I lived in the SF Bay Area, CA. There was only one existing Filipino bakery at the time. My mom got me my first Ube cake and drove 6 hours to get it. She did that every year until more Filipino bakeries started popping up. It’s wild to see Ube “trending” now because it was always part of my childhood in CA and significant in the Filipino community. But nothing beats going back to the motherland and having fresh ube treats back home 😊💜

The purple rice cake or biko you got from Market Market has no ube in it. It is traditionally made with pirurutong, an heirloom variety of sticky rice with purple to black color but since it is rare and expensive, they are mostly made of regular sticky rice dyed with food color.

Great video! Only thing missing is you did not visit an Ube farm. You should try next time, to see how it is cultivated ;) Btw, you should try Ginataan Ube Bilo-bilo, to try it as a warm snack form.

Ube ice cream is my favorite. I think it was magnolia brand that made me love it when i was like 6 or so. I love its coconuty and earth flavor and most of all, its aroma! More than color, i love ube for its smell. Now, im craving for ube ice cream! When it turns melty and soft, ugh.

Ube ice cream is my favorite, and my second is ube cake (the round birthday cake version or the log version are really good). Coming at third is Cebu's diced hopia ube, followed by empanada bread with ube filling, and Iloilo's piyaya with ube.

I love Ube. They are hard to find them at Asian Supermarkets in California. Most of the time we find the Japanese Taro. It's very light purple not like the Ube which are dark purple color.

I loved Ube when I was growing up in Cebu Philippines. My dad's family grows different kinds of Ube in Panglao Bohol. Ube was my favorite root crop. Here in the U.S. you can only buy frozen smashed Ube or powder Ube..

Ube is appealing to the eye that's why is a hit overseas in foodstuff. Who would've thought something purple would taste so good when prepared in various ways.
