I was an English teacher. My instructor told us that although not so many Indonesians speak English, Indonesians have one of the best English pronunciations potential. Drilling pronounciation to Indonesians are relatively easier than doing it to students in other region. When Indonesians speak English, their pronunciation can be very good. That explains why interviewers here are confused with Deny's (the Indonesian) English as American English.

This is a really interesting video. Thanks for posting! I think the girl asked very good questions and the guy was very confident! Just a little note tho, to better read the vibe of people (and I am Canadian (Chinese) so coming from that perspective❤): I'd appreciate if the guy was a bit more conscientious with his words. I understand the video is a bit nerve-wracking, bc we all want to do well. Please don't say ppl have thick eyebrows just like that either 😮. I think the word off-putting was used mistakenly 😢. Just a tip to end off the convos on a positive note for the ppl, esp when commenting on their looks or style. And you can tell the Japanese girl really wanted to do well, and even asked follow up questions for improvement. It's a bit of a culture difference here so in America they'll just answer straightforwardly, which is why he didn't understand to answer in a way that is more affirming to her efforts. Just a note on these things bc everyone is putting themselves out there :) In any case, I do kudos everyone for being so multicultural and diverse in being in Korea. Very cool 😎

How to differentiate Singapore, Indonesian, and Malaysian abroad: 1. The accent, they have their own accent when speaking English 2. Unlike Sg and Malaysia, Indonesian will rarely/never say the word 'race' when describing the diversity in their country, they will say 'ethnicity/ethnic group'. 3. Regarding no 2, Malaysian will mention 3 races living in their country, Malay, Chinese, Indian (and tend to forget Iban, Dusun, etc living in East Malaysia). 4. @@odeychan9014 you don’t know what you’re talking about. On top of Bahasa Indonesia and local dialects, many Chinese Indonesians in Sumatra speak Hokkien and Mandarin, while Chinese Indonesians in Borneo where I come from speak Teochew, Hakka, and Mandarin. It’s the same with the rest of Indonesia. Things are different with Java because Chinese Indonesians there have always been on the Peranakan side. Even before Indonesia’s independence, their ancestors speak Dutch with the government, local Malay dialect with the natives, and local languages like Javanese and Sundanese at home. Because of this familiarity with the local lingo, Chinese Indonesian publications pre-independence were printed in local Malay, not Chinese like in Singapore or Malaysia. Even after 1928 when we adopted the name “Bahasa Indonesia” for the national language, Chinese Indonesian publications were the ones who first printed some of the most important documents around Indonesia’s independence, including the national anthem and the proclamation of independence, all in Bahasa Indonesia. This is something that’s very different with Malaysia and Singapore where the British maintained a divided society as part of their divide and conquer strategy, that’s been kept alive by the politicians in your countries to control the masses.

That's why I tell my non-Asian friends. It applies to other ethnicities. Like if a blond-ish German girl walks in and you have to guess where she's from just purely by looks alone, you can assume she's from the UK, France, Austria, Switzerland, etc. If a guy from Senegal walks in, you can assume they're from Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, etc. A Pacific Islander-looking person can be Maori, Hawaiian, Tongan, etc. Certain groups of nationalities can have very similar appearances due to shared history, ethno-linguistic, or even haplogroups. The best is to really converse with them, like the two Americans did, ask questions about where they came from, their food, religion, politics, languages, history, etc., which is really the best way to get to know people from other cultures :)

but from a macro-standpoint in general there are common characteristics for each of the inidivual countries even if they may not always line up in individual cases. I could personally tell British, Germans, French apart much better than a random guess, so there is something there that makes each nation unique.@@alistairt7544

I’m upset as well… because Mr Zach right here… couldn’t guess MY country (🇧🇩) properly. When the Bangladeshi girl Aksa walked in, I instantly knew she was Bangladeshi. Even after she said rice is the staple food (of Bangladesh), Zach guessed wrong and assumed her to be “Indian”, even after she asked him “why ?” No matter how “sorry” he is, this wrong guess won’t fix anything ! Bangladeshis on average, consume more rice than their Indian neighbours. While Indians are mostly vegetarian, Bangladeshis are mostly pescatarian. Zach should know, Bangladesh and India are 2 separate states. Just because these 2 separate states are similar, doesn’t mean they are the same. Bangladesh and India are both ethnically diverse. Present-day Bangladesh had always been a part of India for thousands of years and continued to be, a part of India… even when the entire Indian Subcontinent was under the British rule for 400 years which, ended in 1947 when India became an independent state and their Punjab state became what we know, as Pakistan today. Before Bangladesh ever became Bangladesh, Pakistan kept this territory occupied for a couple of decades (from 1947 to 1970), calling this territory, “East Pakistan”. During the occupation period, they tried to replace our language and cultural identity (Bengali) with theirs (Urdu). Before the British left in 1947, they divided territories of this Subcontinent based solely on religion and that’s exactly how Pakistan took the chance and kept us occupied for a couple of decades because like us, they’re also a Muslim-majority territory; the only difference is : Pakistan is an Islamic Republic and we’re a People’s Republic. A liberation war between my people and the Pakistani soldiers broke out in 1971 and guess who won that war ?? WE DID !!! 🇧🇩 (and yet, 7 months after fighting with them) We wouldn’t have been able to drive those Pakistani soldiers out of our territory if India never lent us a helping hand. Bangladesh has been in existence for 53 years, we did come a long way even if our history is brief. Our Independence Day is this month, on the 26th… just 3 days after my birthday. I was born, just 21 years after we became independent and free from Pakistani occupation. Everytime Americans mis-identify us as “Indians” and on top of that, continue to spell our names incorrectly, it’s NOT okay and it seriously hurts. It’s time for Zach and his female friend to read more history books and more geography books before they make any more mistakes and embarrass themselves further in the near future.

The sad truth is : many Americans don’t give importance to history and geography like the rest of the world; they aren’t even aware about the 400 years of British colonization and the partition of India that happened in 1947. Not only do they confuse us with “Indians”, some of them can’t even pronounce our names right. Ask them to pronounce my name, they’ll call me “Asfara” instead of Afsara. How will they know that rice is our staple food ? They don’t go through history books and geography books.

Most Asians I’ve met can’t really tell. My siblings and I have often been mistaken for Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and a few times Filipino. When I was in Japan they were super, super friendly but very "quiet". When I was in the Philippines they were friendly and more outgoing. In Taiwan they treated me, a white guy, as if I was Chinese or one of them. Each one of them has their own world compared to the other nations. I realize we classify Europeans in a similar way but for some reason it seems weirder to lump the Asian countries together when they are not unified in the sense the Europeans are (so to speak) and they are so different.

To be honest, a lot of people think Bangladeshis look like Indians and I get that a lot as well but I think that eventually people will start to notice that Bangladesh is a completely different country when it comes to the culture and religion. Not even south asians know the difference between Bangladeshis and Indians which actually shocked me when I went to secondary school because everyone thought I was either Indian or Pakistani. Some even thought that I was Sri lankan which was a first because I generally have more fair skin (not to be rude). But hopefully people will start to realise the differences, especially the accent is a dead giveaway. Bangladeshis have a more americanised/british accent when they speak english, so it's quite easy to tell. Also, I hope you enjoyed my little rant I was so bored so decided to comment for a good 10 minutes. You're welcome.😊

lol those islands in sweden are just like bunch of floating rocks also those are basically land covered by water haha, can't really see it on maps aswell. i wouldn't consider sweden as an island country with the most islands cause the people in sweden don't even live on those small floating rocks😂😂

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world, Sweden is the country with the most number islands. These are two different things.

Very understandable confusion with the people you got wrong. Bangladesh was once part of India, then East Pakistan, before becoming independent, so understandable mixup thee. Also interesting that you said the Mongolian lady looked like she was from Kazakhstan, as they share a deep historical connection.

The accent difference between Indian English and Bangladeshi English is pretty obvious. Bangladeshi have a very different and unique accent of English which is not very popular as Indian accent. So understandable people mixing up. But if they notice the accent, it is easy to differentiate.
