Trying To Shoot Efren's Double Jump Triple Carom | Your Average Pool Player

Спорт

Welcome back to another installment of Your Average Pool Player. Today we are attempting to recreate an unbelievable Efren Reyes shot from an exhibition match against Vivian Villarreal. What started out as an interesting looking shot became a visit back to an old episode of Your Average Pool Player in which Alex Pagulayan taught us about double jumping the cue ball and object ball.

Rollie, have you considered recreating excellent *safety* shots? In particular, the complex kick-safes Efren is famous for in which the cue ball (after kicking rail-first into an object ball) slowly drifts in a particular direction, nestling neatly behind an obstacle. These are TOUGH to recreate and require a lot of experimentation with spin and speed.

Some time before this happened I watched Efren relaxing and practicing with Vivian. Efren played a similar shot as is shown here. It was much "easier" though. It shocked Vivian, a top professional player. She had never seen that shot and was unable to come close to replicating it on many attempts. I say this to offer encouragement. If a top professional has trouble performing that shot there is no shame for the rest of us. I'm making myself sound like an expert with this shot. To be clear, I am absolutely not. Anyway, that shot haunted me for a couple of weeks. Finally I found that video again and watched the the shot in slow motion. At that point I understood what was happening. Many years ago I could jump balls as well or better than many of the best of players in the Seattle/Tacoma area. When I started jumping balls there weren't any jump cues to be found yet so I used my full cue. Years go by and I start to see a few jump cues around. I thought they were just a fad and would never be part of the game. I was wrong. BTW not a fan of the jump cue to put in mildly. It takes away from the purity of this magical game and allows lesser players a better chance to beat better players. When the jump cue is used even by an intermediate player there is little doubt about the cue ball getting over the interfering ball. If that same intermediate player attempts the same shot with a full length cue the success rate drops precipitously. MUCH more skill is needed to jump balls with a full size cue. Jump cues are hurting the game because the player who plays the best loses more often now. The popularity of the game of pool is not helped when lesser players through the use of technology instead of skill, knock better players out of tournaments. The Championship Match has by far the most viewers. Those viewers do not want to see relatively poor players on that stage. If they do see them on "that stage" their interest is lost and they "turn the channel." Fewer people watching equates to less monetary profit. The reduction in profit diminishes the popularity of pool. Just my opinion. Cheers, John Noe
