Trying to FIX: PANASONIC DMR-EX77 HDD/DVD RECORDER (QUICK VERSION)

Hi, this quick 'trying to fix' video shows my brother and I attempting to repair a Panasonic DVD player which will not power up. If you want the full length version then please watch • Trying to FIX: PANASON...
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

So glad I found your video, I had the issue with it just loosing power all of a sudden. I removed the case to get the disc out thinking the machine could not be saved. I checked the little fuse while in there and did notice a bulge and gunk on one cap. Not being an expert i just put the case back on. Later that evening i googled the issue with the EX77 and watched the vid. Sourced a replacement cap and followed your vid. Success for under £4 inc post 👍👍

Excellent. It is always good to see anything repaired rather than replaced, especially electronic stuff.

Either you have a twin or you have really good editing skills cause God damn you both sound very similar with headphones. I thought it was a voice over till I saw the hands

I would have changed all the caps to modern versions just as a safety point but really good job 👍

Have the same DVD player. DMR EX77. Just took my cover off. The same big capacitor is distorted and looks blown. Will attempt a repair. Thanks for sharing this info..

You are correct about those strategically weakened score marks on top of the capacitors. They allow a failing capacitor to gently open up and release pressure rather than exploding, which they would do otherwise.

Excellent, I seen some of these on eBay with power issues. I bet it is quite a common fault with them :-)

2 faults here. Voltage on a capacitor does matter. A slight higher value is OK But much greater than half again is not good ESR meter reads by a high frequency low volt signal so Ecaps do not need to be taken out to read. That is the value of the meter. You can protect the meter with 2 diodes in parallel across the probes 1 east west the other west east. Swollen caps are stuffed, they will leak and rot print and Note Capacitors age due to high ripple current so PSU go long before those in the other section

So when you install the new capacitors , you firstly solder them in then cut the excess wire ?

  • @andrewmorton9683

Yes, the excess wire will only cause problems. Just cut it so that it looks like the other ones on the circuit board.

Looking for some help/advice. My PVR records fine but when you want to record to dvd there appear to be a problem with the tray. It will come out but goes back in again. Sometimes it will wait but when i try to put a disc in it starts to close. If I do succeed then getting the disc out can be a problem. Don't want to scratch them. Has anyone had a similar problem and is it fixable?

Unfortunately the DMR-EX77 PVRs appear to eat capacitors for breakfast. Mine has failed for the second time and needs several more capacitors replacing. Often they fail under the Digital PCB VEP79157 and it's a right pain in the bum as you have to completely dismantle the entire unit to get the mainboard out... which I now have to do again 😞
