How To Record Music On HiFi VHS - Analog Technique’s

Музыка

In this video I run through how you can use a Hifi VHS machine as an analog mix down recorder. It’s a step by step tutorial so will hopefully be useful if you’re doing this for the first time.
Most HiFi VCRs have really good analog audio recording capabilities (kinda like a poor man’s reel to reel machine). With a bit of careful planning you could use a VCR to help produce a completely analog release where you track to an analog multitrack, mix to HiFi VHS, then copy/distribute on cassette or vinyl. Alternatively you might use the VCR as an analog processing stage in a digital recording, as an alternative to 'analog style' plugins in a DAW.
This video shows how to do this process with a PAL VCR.
If you’re using NTSC VHS, you may need to input a video signal to enable
audio recording too.

Hey thanks for checking it out! Could be useful if you ever do a fully analog release? You could mix your material down to a VCR and then transfer to cassette tape for distribution (at least that’s my current plan 😅). 👍

My Mitsubishi S-VHS HiFi VCR is still connected to the component AV system. I don’t think I have recorded any video to VHS in years but I still use it to watch movies I have on VHS and I use it regularly to record audio only. A standard 240 tape gives me 4 hours of extremely high quality audio, and I have many vinyl albums recorded to HiFi VHS meaning I don’t have to wear out the stylus or the records., and I can play a double album - both sides without having to turn records over or swap to the second record.

No kidding, the most blown away I've ever been by any kind of home media was when I finally got a VCR with hifi audio and plugged it into my amplifier and put in my well-worn copy of Star Wars. The THX ident, which had made the tiny single speaker on my old 70s telly rattle and raspberry, was deep and full and bam. The film starts and wow. Given the quality I went through a period of recording radio broadcasts to VHS and would use long play since there seemed no discernible difference between that and standard play on the audio side. Bad move as playing those back 20+ years later on a different VCR the dropout is astounding.

I still have a sizeable collection of used VHS tapes that of course never gets used anymore. Might give this a try as I much prefer the warmth of analog tape versus digital. As someone else said, it would be great to find a way to multitrack record using VHS tapes but, tape speed would be a hindrance to fidelity. OP your recording sounds great, nice distinctive tone.

It should be a VHS with manual setting of the recording level, not one with automatic recording level

I don’t own one unfortunately but it would be preferable.

Honestly, I don't understand why you copy from a cassette tape to a hi-fi VHS and then to digital. The sound will probably be worse than if you had digitized sounds from the cassette tape all at once

Yes, that’s a fair point and it would be higher quality. I was producing a fully analog album at the time though, so was testing out the process.

Not really, I’m just demonstrating the process of recording audio with a HiFi VCR with this video. I’m currently doing a fully analog album so I’m personally interested in how VCR’s have minimal generational loss when doing mix downs (for much less money than reel to reel recorders).

@@wehappyfewmusic well i guess feel like an idiot, I stumbled upon this vid, because of watching vids showing the high fidelity of vhs, and figured this was another video demonstrating it the hifi capablities of vhs. . so i was mind boggled when you recorded a low fi casstette source to a hi fi vhs ,
