The reason the self-defense mode didn't work was because the room was too bright. It's intended for low light environments, because of the constant, rapid shift between light and dark being difficult for the eyes to keep up with.

Regarding the point at 11:12, you can get prescription sunglasses. As someone who has worn glasses just about all their life, I've gotten a pair of regular lens glasses and sunglasses whenever I've got a new prescription. So while it's a good reason, it's also kinda avoidable.
