It’s so amazing that the first womens look (and the zip one) were designed so the sleeves and skirt could be long or short based on formality of the occasion. We’ve moved so far from that “dressing for dinner” way of life that Danny thinks the adjustable nature of the garments is for weather.

I’m a costume designer. The narrator says “for morning, afternoon, or evening” because social norms required different levels of formality based on time of day. If you’ve seen pictures or footage from recent British events like royal weddings or funerals, the gray striped pant and dark gray or black cutaway coat look is morning formal menswear, the way white tie and tailcoat (or, but slightly less formal, tuxedo) is evening formal menswear. In the 1930s that sort of specificity was still practiced by non royal middle class to wealthy people.

@@Alex-cw3rz Yeah! Still, my joke stands, I made it vague for a reason. Although I guess I could've been more clear. Hitlers influence on the average person was rising, as was the threat of war. In 1938 Japan's aggressive nationalism led to the construction of Unit 731 in the Japanese occupied region of Manchuria. I didn't say all this was new stuff, it was all brewing. I know fascism, communism and nationalism didn't just *appear* in 1939. However it began to be more mainstream, people in power with those beliefs, Shiro Ishii, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Josef Mengele to name a few. One of the reasons Hitler was able to gain so much popularity was because Germany was *still* suffering from the after effects of WWI. Hitler gave the Germans an easy target, Jewish people, given that Anti-Semitism has been around for centuries, it wasn't hard to convince a-lot of the world that they are the ones to blame. I don't at all intend this to be aggressive, I just wanted to make it clear that I know its not that simple :)

The weird thing is that they were pretty on point with some of it for today. See through shirts are common, people have mobile phones instead of phones tied to their clothing, there are unnecessary zippers on clothing, they were right about pants and wider based heels in women's fashion, and they seemed to anticipate an increased involvement of women in the business sector while misjudging what would happen to pockets. Also big hair was popular basically from the 70-90s, so that was on point too. Pretty good considering the lack of anything they had to really judge off of, so I'm kind of wondering if they're going to be even more right in the 2040s.

An interesting fact, the way that they spoke in old movies and commercials was actually an accent that was put-on. Actors were taught to speak this way. They believed that this was a more clear affectation that would be understood better by the audience, and it has a lot of British influence. If you look at old bloopers from movies in the 20s/30s/40s you can hear when they break character that they speak pretty similarly to us.
