Korvmoj is Swedish slang that means "hotdog stand". Lördagsgodis means "Saturday candy", as kids here are told we only get to buy and eat candy on Saturday. Belöning means "reward". Daim said as dime was spot on! I'm one of those people who adore salmiak/ammonium chloride/salty liquorice, and I have done as long as I can remember. When I was around 6, I begged every weekend to walk into the city centre so I could buy my Saturday sweets at a shop there. This meant I could choose all the candy myself and they had a whole wall of liquorice pick-n-mix and I always just picked form that. Now as an adult I go for sour gummies and salty liquorice, and at the bottom of the bad there's usually some salty liquorice like the ones you had but with some sour residue on it, amazing! What makes pick-n-mix unique, other than the format, is that we have so much more gummy candies than what you can get anywhere else.

Saw too many kids just stick their hand in the Brachs, lick a few candies and then throw them back in. Often 2-3 year olds but sometimes 13-14 year olds. Nope. Never did that. I do love and miss the Brach's Burnt Peanut candies, but always got pre-packaged.

Those veggie dogs are served there with a sweet, purple pickled cabbage, thin fried onions and a little mustard. Another way to get the sweet and sour crunch is to top hotdogs with a little coleslaw and a little sauerkraut and Dijon.

Here in Sweden, pick and mix candy is huge! Every (there may be few exceptions) grocery store has pick and mix candy, usually close to the checkouts. I really like Djungelvrål, while yes, it tastes salty initially, but when you get through that salty cover, the licorice has a vanilla undertone to it (at least for me) I'll have to say though, the candy you got at IKEA is not really what a typical candy bowl would look like here in Sweden, we just have so many more options and often also include bite sized chocolates or chocolate covered pieces of candy (often the candy itself is like a firmer version of a marshmallow) Swedish candy often play with your senses through textures and combining sweet and sour and salty flavors. Usually freshness isn't an issue with pick and mix candy if you buy the more popular ones, it simply sells so fast that it doesn't really have time to become stale while in the containers in the store. Less popular stores or less popular types of candy, can however have issues with stale candy just because there's not enough rotation (and/or the store just doesn't give a damn and don't change out candies that have been in the containers for a while)

Agreed! Once you get used to the ammonium chloride it starts to taste sweet rather than salty. It's a kind of "grown up" sweet, like comparing milk chocolate to dark chocolate. This is the most amazing aspect to salty licorice, it transforms your sense of taste :D And tasting other things afterwards transforms those tastes too. Drinking coke after is a really different experience!

Fun fact for you, Emmy: the name of those sweets, "Lördagsgodis" (Lohr-das-go-dis) = "Saturday Candy" and refers to a traditional idea of eating sweets only on Saturday, as a practice for good dental health :) The pick-and-mix candy wall is hence a common treat for the saturday grocery shopping trip, when you want to get a little bit of everything for your one cheat day.

They didn’t say anything about being sick. They said they had a fainting episode. There’s various medical conditions where you might feel faint. Maybe they have issues with blood sugar and just needed to sit down and eat something. And they didn’t say anything about driving. Maybe they use public transportation. Also Where I work, if someone had a medical emergency (which I would consider a fainting episode), we would probably have called EMS and would certainly have been checking on them at least periodically until they left. What if their medical condition changed and became life threatening? Management dropped a major ball there, IMO.

I live in rural Western Massachusetts USA. A year ago, I was driving my daughter home from work around 10pm in my Prius. I came around a bend going uphill to meet a moose standing dead center in a smaller road. I think my Prius wasn't even up to his belly! I flashed my lights and honked the horn to no avail. I adore IKEA food. Here with the family card you get 50% off their cafeteria food on fridays which is insanely low, and kids eat for literal pennies. The food is very filling too. Their hotdogs are the cheapest you can get here! And I really like their hashbrowns too. Easy McDonald's dupe. And yeah, sadly the pantry section got smaller in general. I miss the bread you could bake in the carton :( but one thing I can recommend are their oat cookies, especially the sugar free ones - they have sweetener but I like that they have more of that salty quality I personally adore in oat cookies. Also I like that they have three types of meatballs now - the classic (though you can get different types of meat in the frozen section), veggie and plant-based. Veggie are vegetable-based, not trying to be like the meat ones or anything, just a vegetarian option. But plant-based are actively trying to be like the meat ones, which is a good option too.

  • @iesika7387

I want to try those hot dogs! My favorite veggie sandwich patties are always the ones that don't try to taste or look like meat, like a spicy black bean and corn patty or a big falafel. They make for a good quick, easy, self-contained plant-based meal when you're in a rush or dealing with a work lunchroom "kitchen."

Lordasgodis means Saturday Candy because it is/was a custom to let the kids indulge in candy one day a week and to hold off the rest of the week to help keep their teeth healthy. My Norwegian family used to send me a Barne Possa (child’s bag) filled with a mixture of candies for Christmas. If you have a chance to try Freja chocolate, it’s the best in the world. It inspire Roald Dahl when he wrote Willy Wonka. At IKEA you can find Maribou chocolate sometimes and it’s the best approximation I can find stateside.

Especially in the USA since there seems to be a culture of getting what you want when you order food or drinks. I mean that you can take out and add things and that is very normal so choosing the candy you want should be a thing too! Emmy you should come to Finland (or Sweden) to experience the pick and mix sections! :D Also, it would be nice to see you taste fresh nordic bilberries, lingonberries, cloudberries and strawberries!

People tend to wait for the price by weight to decrease and then everyone flocks to "the candy wall" to pick their favorites.

Just know that the after taste is the licorice it self. Licorice root tea is a natural sweetener. That is the aftertaste you get. Try Stash tea that’s licorice root

I always love perusing pick & mix candy in any store. This love started with Brach's candy back in the 70's & 80's (I still have a soft spot for their root beer barrels and sour balls), which got supercharged when I discovered various ethnic delis had their own imported versions. While I have yet to find a black licorice that I truly like, I have managed to find a few that are somewhat tolerable - usually owing to the fact that other flavors have been mixed in, such as rhubarb or huckleberry.

Lördagsgodis is "The Saturday Sweets" In Sweden, candy-eating is reserved for Saturday, when parents take their children to the candy shop to pick their week's choices. The candy is usually bought by weight at the candy shop or grocery store from big bins.

My cat Oreo has a sweet tooth. Anytime we open a candy bar, cake, ice cream, and believe it or not cotton candy, she tries to eat it. She would have enjoyed herself quite a bit. We unfortunately dont have an Ikea here in western NC. I think I would like it.

One of my favorite Ikea food items is the Blueberry Dryk! It's a concentrated almost syrup to mix with water, and it's wonderful with seltzer, lemonade, cocktails... I've been craving it to make some iced tea with! Really nice to make your drink as sweet or not as you want. Sadly it doesn't ship tho

I miss the Ikea candy wall so much! To get the equivalent swedish candy today online cost around $30-40 😢. I want to say they got rid of the candy wall during Covid. There bagged candy isn't bad; especially the one with the rhubarb gummies!

A funny anecdote about the veggie sausage: I think Ingvar Kamprad (IKEA's founder) wrote in his will that a hot dog should always only cost 5 SEK at IKEA. Last year, IKEA lowered the price of the veggie hot dog from 10 SEK to 5 SEK and raised the price of the normal hot dog, but there was a big outcry in Sweden and now both the hot dogs cost 5 SEK, lol

My favourite Ikea foods are the hotdogs and the seafood balls i.e. vegan fish roe. The seafood balls are not always available when I visit, so it it really grab when I see them. There is also their oat biscuits and ginger snap biscuits which are really nice and worth buying the big packets. But logistically speaking, it is not easy, as it is a minimum of two buses to get there, or a taxi or Uber.
