TRY THIS SUN SALUTATION OF AWARENESS (MBSR, MINDFULNESS) | Feldenkrais with Alfons

Yoga websites list a multitude of benefits for the Sun Salutation, just for example (or google yourself, if you can't believe it, either): Strengthens the entire digestive system (including stomach, pancreas, intestines, liver, etc.) and cures, and prevents constipation. Invigorates the heart and will cure and prevent blood pressure, palpitation. Develops the lungs, gives you wind and prevents tuberculosis. Will remove kidney troubles. Makes you immune from disease by tremendously increasing your disease-resisting power. Will keep you away from sins. Helps lose weight. Gives glowing skin. Ensures regular menstrual cycle. Brings down blood sugar levels.
While I cannot promise these benefits (as I am a down to earth person with a science degree), I can promise you deep insights into the flexion-extension cycles that make up the sun salutation. You will be able to perform these way more profoundly than any other yoga guru, and you will feel yourself better, YOU will feel better. I also hope to arouse your curiosity in experimenting with these positions.
Somatic education is a field within bodywork and movement studies which emphasizes internal physical perception and experience. The term is used in movement therapy to signify approaches based on the soma, or "the body as perceived from within," including Alexander technique, the Feldenkrais Method, and Rolfing. In dance, the term refers to techniques based on the dancer's internal sensation, in contrast with "performative techniques".
This is my series of videos with beginner lessons of the Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education. This will give everyone with an Internet connection the chance to get to know the Feldenkrais Method, to learn more about awareness, mindfulness, how to take care of one's own health, and to become better day by day.
I recommend to work through the videos one by one, in the correct order, starting here: • GETTING BETTER DAY BY ...

Thanks to you and your videos , I'm finally able to fold my body up from a standing position to a sitting floor position and get up from the floor by rotating hips and un folding my body to stand . I had a stroke 4 years ago and bit by bit I'm regaining flexibility and movement . I now explore my body position and knowing how the body is structured I can instantly well almost choose the best way to move. Thank You

Oooh this lesson has so much in it! I’ll repeat this many times ;) Kneeling on one knee is pretty challenging for me right now - a strong indicator that will keep me motivated to see how stable and more aware I can become. Thanks again, Alfons!

I've done a lot of tabletop/cat/cow. Never have I felt my spine in such a way. I visualised that my arms and legs were steady poles; this gave support for my spine to move freely. A whole section in my thoracic vertebrae 'clicked' into alignment. I really connected with your comment of lengthening...I am now visualising curving my spine around a large ball and lengthening around it...this lead to uncovering where I hold tension...then relaxation. Thank you Alfons see you in the next lesson...

Fascinating lesson. Need to repeat several times to get it! Thanks Alfons. Ps sitting cross legged MUCH more comfortable afterwards. Don't want to get up!! Never had that before, change in the hips and straightness of the spine (have scoliosis issue that has benefitted considerably). Much more enjoyable than the hell of the previous lesson that made me very angry (in a good way) releasing the trapped inner child.

Thanks Alfons - really liked how you wrapped everything together from the previous lessons. At a break in the middle, the shoulders felt very relaxed (as much as from the Freedom for stiff shoulder's lesson with Jeanette), and the flexion and extension on one arm and one elbow felt great - working with different muscles, vertebrae, etc. Nice lesson.

Hi there Alfons! -If you can believe this, I could not do the sitting down movement (the first positions)! My mid-back was so weak that I could feel it shaking. I often find I can’t sit still in that cross legged position fo long, unless I am active and bending back and forth...but I just cannot sit still in that position b/c of the pain. So, I continued on by simply laying on the floor and doing Class 2 with the head and hands interlinked and this helped relieve that back agitation. I also found I weak on the last move, kneeling...felt a tightness in the left hip. I know my lumbar was very sore today and the left is ‘twingy’ with pain. I wish I could report better today! :) I feel better now that I’m moving about.

HI Alfons, back again this morning. The sun salutation was much easier this morning except in the hips during the up on the knee positions where there is a lot of wobble. Very interesting. I think at the end of this sequence I'll go on to your hip series. There was so much change today! It was very exciting. I could feel the movement of the spine for more of the undulations, felt the movement of shoulders and shoulder blades. When I stand up I feel that I am standing in a much more comfortable, might I say also dignified? position. Maybe that means that more and more of the old habits connected with pain and shame are being released through these lessons. Thank you so much!! All of it is wonderful and I appreciate your help so much.

HI Alfons, Good morning from Tampa Florida. I came to this lesson this morning and was not so happy that it was strenuous! I like that lying on my back and belly stuff, yet also glad as I have not been doing things that require.. how would you put it...the body to exert itself. First time ever, doing "table pose" that I was able to feel my spine all the way through and find some evenness and grace in the movement. Usually there is just straining to try to achieve a curved spine. I will be doing this lesson again ( and hopefully again). I think it will help a lot with the asymmetry in my hips and pain in the right one. Thank you so much! You are a wonderful teacher!

Fantastic class Alfons, thank you! My body feels so different that I can actually sit in the awkward position my computer is in to connect to my TV and write a comment. And thank you for the reminder sheet, that's a great help because I do need a prompt to remember the movements. I have a request - when we did the forward and backward flexion of the head, on our knees, I became aware of the tightness of the muscles in the front of my thighs. This has always been a problem for me. When I used to do yoga, the poses that stretch these front thigh muscles were really painful. Do you have a lesson that helps with that?

Oof! This lesson definitely needs more effort for me than the previous ones. Very interesting the way I started to feel all the different parts of my spine, but also can't help but feel a bit weak and wobbly. Is this something to be concerned about I wonder? Or is it just that gravity is quite strong and some of these poses mean we have to work against it? I think I shall keep repeating the whole series as I'm learning so much.

Saludos ✌️
