I'm going on 6 months with the same bottles, washing twice a week. I also watched your tutorial video on washing hair properly. Love this Redken set! Thanks Chris!

    I KNOW Redken makes some great products. However, my dermatologist told me not to use products that are older than six months, as I have to take antibiotics for nodular acne. I don't know if a liter bottle would be too much to purchase, but it seems to be the only way to get a deal.

    can you explain from a chemical perspective why drugstore shampoos “don’t work”? most drugstore shampoos use the same surfactants as professional shampoo, so it doesn’t really make sense to me that they don’t clean the hair. no shade, love your routine but interested if there’s scientific evidence to back up claims that professional shampoo cleans better.

    As far as I know the thing is that the drugstore ingredients are diluted with water. Ever had a little rest of shampoo in a bottle and to get it out you filled it with water? It still lathers and if you do it with a professional shampoo it still has cleaning abilities but not so much with drugstore Shampoos cuz they have the same ingredients but are this diluted version from the beginnig. Same ingredients (which is also not always true, professional products use higher quality silciones than most drugstore products) which can be washed out more easily and prevent build up and breakage) just way less concentrated. It's like comparing a fiat to a Ferrari. Both are cars. Both can drive. But one has more Power than the other.

    The stronger the chemical reaction, the cleaner your hair will be! Pro products aren’t diluted and so will have a stronger chemical reaction and clean your hair fully, drugstore products ar usually diluted with water which is why they’re cheaper, but it also means the chemical reaction isn’t as strong so your hair won’t be as clean meaning you will have to clean more often and get products building up over time

    Most “Drugstore” shampoos contain heavy conditioning agents like silicones which leave the hair coated and ‘Slippery’ so it detangles easily. You follow that up with the companion silicone conditioner and the hair is coated from root to tip and it attracts dirt, oils and grime so you have to shampoo more frequently.

    @@ubs16 Yes, I know “Salon Shampoos” contain Silicones. But they are usually better balanced than Drugstore Brands who are going for that ‘Shampoo + Conditioner’ feel and use more than is really needed. I don’t “Hate” Silicones per se’ but most companies use way too much and in EVERY PRODUCT they make, including ones that don’t really need them. Silicones should be a “Finishing Step” in my opinion and not just used as a general conditioning agent unless the hair is Color - Treated and needs some color protection during the shampoo.

    I can go longer than 4 days if it's not hot/humid. I'm in the northeast, so October through March is fairly dry and cold. Professional products do make all the difference, and a few lifestyle choices as well. -Silk pillowcase -Clean/wash brushes and combs every 2 weeks -Stop the 'auto- touching' the top of your hair and scalp. When you do, make sure your hands are freshly washed (I see so many people running their fingers through their hair from scalp to mids, just spreading sebum and whatever gunky oily substance is already on fingers and dirty hands). -Use a Twisty Turbie or other micro fiber towel, and WASH it frequently. Never use your body drying towel on your hair. -And of course, take Chris' advice on products and especially never use products on his 'do not use' list. You'll go 3-5 days or more in the winter, I promise.

    This is the biggest load of BS I have ever heard. I’ve been a stylist for 48 yrs and if you have a greasy scalp together with a greasy face, you cannot go 4 days without washing either unless you want to be a smelly dirty pig. Even normal skin needs to be washed daily. Are you really going to wash your face every four days? Regardless of how long your hair is how dry the ends are or how bleached they are the scalp will still get oily with the new growth and you want to keep that clean and your follicles clean and not blocked so you have to clean it every day with a mild shampoo, not one that last four days and you have to add the moisture to the hair and an oil to the ends of the hair because you’re never gonna get your scalp oil onto those ends but your scalp will be greasy and your ends will be dry in this case like I said, you need to wash your hair daily if you need to condition the ends and then add oil to the ends like Moroccan oil and all shampoos clean well you don’t need to get a moisturizing daily shampoo from supermarkets you can use a good professional shampoo daily I do. I use Ola Plex, Redken acidic bonding shampoo and Schwarzkopf’s goodbye, yellow shampoo, because I have bleach hair with a greasy scalp and a greasy face. I use Ola Plex conditioner, and then I use a leave in conditioner by Redken acidic bonding, and then I use Moroccan oil on the very ends. I’m adding moisture daily , but having clean hygienic hair as well.

    So, how to tell which shampoos are actually professional? Aside from the "sold in salons" answer - all salons don't carry all pro brands. But how do we determine which is professional vs overpriced "luxury" shampoo. The price alone is not a reliable determination of quality, and the labels all blatantly say "salon quality" or "professional quality."

    Ik that since he didn't mention other hair types/circumstances/environmental conditions that may still need daily wash it can feel that it missed that point, sides and its solution here but he doesn't not know or not agree with what you say seeing how hes already made these two videos on different hair wash routines for different hair types (fine,medium, coarse hair) and may be even thats generalization but since general public needs that information,not every exception/perspective can be always explained in every video since it will just make it very long and hes probably aiming for short and precise tips for people with general hair care issues,who can watch it for their particular common issue set when they have little time/+ every persons perspective is dependant on their experience of what they have dealt with more and they will speak more about it. and when its an exceptional issue he makes a seperate video on it, so it helps when ppl also check the person out to reduce any misunderstandings and list their exceptions in the comments so he can make a video on the people with exceptional cases and their solutions too. Types of hair and how to pick shampoo for them. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pn5ny8aKmNW0n9I.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/ooSFr5Jtk6TbgJs.html So I dont think hes implying that everyone shouldn't wash their hair daily if they need to when ppls hair types/circumstances demand it,or forcing them to do so because i have seen his other videos and he always keeps saying that many things from how long one needs to go without a wash/types of shampoos n products needed differs,for different people of different hair types etc. (Idk if you have watched his other videos especially from hair care playlist, which also have tips on how to manage the hair while exercising: idk if it will help since your conditional is exceptional but still, if it even helps a lil. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d5aburtsp7eogrg.html And for humidity may be a dehumidifier + humidity monitor to not take away excess moisture will help, even tho ik not everyones in a situation to get it but if/when you are, may be it will help, and shower cap in the hold or cold shower even if one doesn't live in humid areas: a tip i got from him) but they are really good, but if you have watched you ll know what i mean), especially his video where he explains why leave-in conditioner and oiling the ends of hair lightly is so important. but he might mean that when for certain other external reasons like bad shampoos people are forced to wash their hair daily which are controllable factors and hence if we can control that external factor and other than that for ppl that dont have other circumstances/hair types that dont affect how often ppl wash the hair then he wants to give people atleast the option to do it. I understand that other ppl may do this and ppl keep shaming each other into Washing either too frequently or infrequently depending on their own beliefs, pushing what works for them because of their hair types and not because of external factors on to other ppl without realizing it that its ok to have different hair routines. but even if it seems similar, not every creator is the same and it really helps when we don't misunderstand a creator/video when they dont approach every perspective since they could be helpful to us,ik it can feel frustrating and like being left out which i can relate with because lot of ppl talked about diys which cant be used consistently, while no body talked about basic detailed haircare techniques for reducing frizzy and damaged hair he describes in his other videos without which any other diy hair care routines would fail.which made me feel alienated because the videos didn't apply to me,while this channel is the first one that tackled these core issues that most other channels dont, and while its not necessarily giving every information out there i feel like it has a lot of potential compared to many diy channels, that basically do same thing or miss out on lot more info than this one,if the audience suggests the topics and the videos are made accordingly it will grow even more. However yeah i understand both sides.

    No one needs to wash their hair everyday. ESPECIALLY if you have curly hair. You wash hair to clean the scalp and product build up on strands. With curly hair it’s even harder for sebum to travel down the hair shaft. It often feels drier than straight hair because of this. Unless something else is at play your hair shouldn’t need to be washed every day. This could be excessive oil production or heavy product build up like gel. In your case it seems it’s because you work out. As a fellow curly girl, from the Caribbean, I can tell you, you still shouldn’t NEED to wash it everyday. You may be using too much products or scented products. Avoid anything with added fragrances, when it has to mix with sweat the smell is never pleasant. You may also want to reconsider the shampoo you use. I would also recommend seeing a dermatologist or trichologist if you feel the need to wash your hair everyday.

My questions are: do these rules apply the same way when you apply other styling products to your hair? Or what do you recommend for us? Do I buy a professional shampoo? And if the answer is yes, should I use it to wash my hair every day? My hair is not too short and I have an oily scalp, so if I don't wash my hair every day it looks really dirty. Apparently professional shampoos are formulated with Water-soluble silicones can be easily rinsed out of hair and won't cause buildup or dullness over time. Basically, they provide the benefits of silicone without the negative side effects.

  • @alexandramcnamee9912

    @alexandramcnamee9912

    @@fatimapatel4367 But pro shampoo formulates with water-insoluble silicones too alongside water-soluble ones. All 3 of the pro shampoos Chris recommends contain water-insoluble silicones (aminopropyl triethoxysilance, dimethicone and dimethicone polymer). That's because shampoo, whether it's drugstore or pro, can formulate with them for conditioning benefits, as long as their cleansing agent is strong enough (sulfate, sulfosuccinate, sulfonate) to remove it. Something being water-insoluble means nothing more than, you need something stronger than water to remove it.... like a strong cleansing agent. So the argument that pro shampoo uses only water soluble silicone and that's what makes it better, is not true at all. Both types of shampoo use both water soluble and water insoluble silicones. I think "all drugstore shampoo leaves a film on your hair" is a myth -- because most drugstore shampoo uses strong sulfates alongside their water insoluble silicone. I think it's simply that pro shampoo is better at cleaning your hair, because their combination of strong cleansing agents and insoluble silicone is more *sophisticated.*
