We had just graduated college, he was looking for work as a technical writer, he wrote brilliant fiction and cooked the best noodles in the world and loved doughnuts and now he's dead, and he died alone and afraid, and the grief has made me almost numb, and yet somehow that gddamn pen clip still had me shaking with rage. I'm voting for my 97 year old grandma who's not a citizen, but has been living in America for a long time now. She's in a care home and visits have been cut and limited due to Covid, and she and so many other senior citizens in these care homes are now feeling abandoned by their families. I went to see her a few months ago and we were only allowed to see and talk to each other through a window. She was fucking crying when the staff wheeled her out to the window, because she saw us, and we were the first family she had seen in months. Now the home she's in is limiting any family from coming in because they had a Covid outbreak and wants to limit the spread. My grandma and other seniors deserve better. Vote for Biden. Trump's denial of this pandemic has been nothing short of a disaster.

My sister died 3-2-20 from Covid that she contacted in February while Trump was saying "nothing to see here!" It took her husband until January 2021 to get the tests done to determine that she did in fact die from Covid. She never had a chance to protect herself.

My entire family is highly at risk for dying if they get it exept me and my dad. So me and my dad are sent out, like it's the fucking apocalypse and we're the least injured, to get food and shit. This is so dystopian and scary. I couldn't see my family for two weeks because one of my dad's coworkers who he had seen in person recently had tested positive, and his job only gave him an email like: "oh by the way... might wanna get tested bro :/" so we all had to quarantine. I don't know where I was going with this, maybe this was me just ranting, maybe this was me trying to say I understand you. But all I know is that life's shit and super dystopian rn.

People talk about the rising cases and the risks but they don't know what it's like to be a Doctor that has to choose which patients get the dwindling ICU beds that are available to treat serious COVID cases. I am truly sorry for the people Mr Bowen can't help, but not particularly for Mr Bowen himself. He's one of those Leopard ate my face people, as in, he voted for Trump, expecting to get some contracts to his company. I am glad he had his Come to Jesus moment, but that took the pandemic and a sociopath in power, and a sence of total helplessness. I'm only viewing this in Jan, '21. I've always appreciated just how Mr. O. can get to the point by slowly changing the balance between humour (heavy at the start) to reality (heavy at the end) just before the real knife comes out - and his delivery of the death blow is as worthy as any Shakespearean denouement. John, this is Emmy/BAFTA quality material, and I would be extremely sad if it doesn't get recognition: script, staging, and presentation are - as ever - top quality.

I've been binging johns videos for the last couple of weeks, and this one genuinely hurt to watch. Not just because, 2 years on, we know how bad the situation got, but because of the pure emotion in johns voice. His other videos he may get passionate about, but so many times you could hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes that he was flitting between the barrier of outright rage and hearbreaking grief.

I have never seen John Oliver so angry. He was actually shaking after the freaking pen clip. I feel him. I feel him so much.

I you are implying that it is Trump supporters who need to watch this, then I totally disagree with you. Those people are far too gone. This is fake news to them. We lost a co-worker to this disease just a few months ago. A very beloved one. And because of widespread doubt about its severity? He didn't get vaccinated. His wife doesnt have a husband now. His kids don't have a father. It's been a year and people are still dying, and watching this? Man, I'm still so angry.

I saw this when it first came out but I forgot how powerful that ending was. Seeing it really brought me back to that initial period of worry, terror and confusion. Not that the pandemic is no longer serious but now we're more adjusted to living with it in our midst. In those first few months it was absolutely terrifying

It brought back a lot of deeply rooted trauma I didn’t know actually stayed with me, and that coupled with the contents in the segment itself brought me to tears multiple times. I had honestly forgotten how horrifyingly bad it was in America during “The Corona Spring”.

My parents, over the past year, are those people who endlessly defend trump and his handling of the pandemic, they get so angry at me for pointing out anything he's done that they don't like being brought up, and insist it's all somehow Obama (4 years ago), the democrats, and the media exaggerating it. It's honestly been such a shock to find out my parents are these kind of people, they were obama supporters years ago, but now they fight with me, with their friends, even strangers online about their conspiracies. Some days it's honestly hard to remember who they were and harder still to remember how to love them. covid may not have directly taken anyone I know from me, but sure has killed a lot of love.

Trump, like Ronald Regan, turned many normal Americans into far right conspiracy theorists. All he uses is anecdotal evidence and straw man arguments combined with his business brand prestige to win them over.

July of 2023 . John was so visably angry over Trump's mismanagement or lack of any management outside of managing to tear down every safety measure at every turn that I could feel the rage . I almost couldn't finish but, John (and his team; those well enough) really has a way of getting you to stick with him until the end. I'm sure he's expressing what we all feel (felt). It's unconscionable. Sad and enraging.

I think the saddest part of continuing to watch these (of which I mostly certainly won't stop doing) is being able to audibly hear how done with everything John is. Honest props to him and all his staff for still being able to even do this each week.

John oliver is great. Funny as hell while hitting the nail on the head.

I just spent a weeken with my sister, brother-in-law and his family. They're all religious, all anti-vaxxer, anti masker. I was pulling my hair out. Logic & facts go nowhere. Jesus & Trump go anywhere. I love them. But it was difficult to not have a shouting match at times.

This video is spot on. I’m a physician and the beginnings of COVID in the hospital with lack of PPE was possibly the most anxious time of my life. Not having enough protection, not having enough testing materials, not knowing who had it, becoming paranoid that I could be an asymptomatic carrier having been in and out of so many COVID positive rooms and I could potentially spread it to my family when going home was definitely weighing on me. The response by the Trump administration was abysmal, which brings me to my question... why do so many people feel like the president of the United States couldn’t have done more? Why do they give him a pass with 240+k dead? Why is this election as close as it is?

What would you have done differently then? For example, Europe is going through its second wave of cases and lockdowns right now and he ain't president there. European governments have been pretty consistent with mask mandates and lockdowns and yet their numbers are still going up. Maybe, just maybe, Trump isn't the common denominator here… Instead realize that we are dealing with a new virus, an infective agent that is so small (even smaller than bacteria) that is difficult to control. Also, ‪only a fool would take the # reported by the🇨🇳Communist Party at face value. It defies logic for only ~4.6k dead in epicenter: 🇨🇳's 9th largest city w/a 11+mil population, and a level 4 bio-safety lab. Leaked vids show corpses on street, long queues at crematoriums, whistleblowers were silenced: dead/disappeared. But sure _we_ have 40% of global cases, we have more cases and deaths than the epicenter, a country of _1.4 billion_ lol ok, if you believe that, then I have a bridge to sell.

I feel that John was close to actually crying at the end. Damn, this has never happened before.

I started crying about 20 minutes into this.... my uncle needed heart surgery desperately, his condition has been getting gradually worse and there are signs of an impending failure if he can’t get some sort of intensive help.. but they had to pre-test for Covid, and this Friday we learned that he has it. He’s been doing his best to stay safe, but god it’s just really scary. I’m so sad and angry that this got so so out of hand, this shouldn’t have happened.

He was doing the best he could, but his best was borderline disastrous. Not as bad as how Cuomo bungled nursing home citizens though.

It’s hard to know whether to be just profoundly disgusted, baffled, terrified, heartbroken, absolutely enraged, or depressed by this pandemic nightmare and the human shitstain in the Oval Office while it killed so many. So far I guess I’ve opted for all of them.

I find it so hypocritical when trump mentions hunter and how he allegedly colluded with his dad, while Ivanka and Jared nepotically openly hold offices within the white house. How do trump supporters not see this???? Chinese President Xi jinping isn't even brazen enough to put family members in office.

When you mentioned the pen story it actually made me question myself because yes that didn't shock or surprise me anymore. The last 4 years have been so batshit crazy that I feel cynical and apathetic to everything happening and I hate it. Thank you for reminding me it isn't normal

Same. TBH I was surprised he didn't mutter something about the nurses/health care workers being "suckers and losers" under his breath while handing out the pens. The fact that he didn't say anything like that to their faces is what surprised me.

My brother in law just died of Covid a couple of days ago. My sister is left with a 10 year old son to raise alone. I squarely blame Trump for his mishandling of this pandemic.

Politicians here are paid by healthcare and big pharma. The worse the pandemic gets, the more patients need to visit the hospitals. The more patients in the hospitals, the more money hospitals, healthcare, and big pharma makes. Then politicians subsidize treatment with tax payer money. Healthcare, big pharma, and hospitals, can then give even more money to politicians. And if you or your friends and family can buy stocks for Hydroxychloroquine early, or Regeneron, and then peddle these "cures" to the public with your wide media coverage for extra profits on the side, well, that's just icing on the cake.

I can only speak for myself, but I feel so stressed out about this election like never before. I felt this same thing when Trump ran the 1st time and wept for America when he won. Even then, I had no idea how horrific it could get. I've felt dread, have butterflies in my stomach, and whole lot of trouble sleeping. This is not the America I know. THIS is what happens when a narcissistic sociopath with utterly no redeeming qualities of the mind or spirit becomes President.

It's disgusting that the MAGA hat wearing Trump supporters can't bring themselves to question this President in any way. They watch Fox News and get brainwashed into believing that Trump isn't really the brutal corporatist mercenary who supports big CORPORATIONS and billionares over human beings in all of his policy agendas. Trump's greed for wealth and power is his only true focus. He continually undermines the rights of consumers, workers, unions, and patients for the benefit of big business. He's made it easier for corporations today pay workers less, rip off consumers, block unions, and deny coverage for patients. Trump and Fox News have duped people into voting against their own best economic interests. In fact, Trump supporters even risk their own health and safety going to rallies, where no masks are worn and no one socially distances. Trump supporters are tragic because they are victims of fraud. They believe that Fox News is ETHICAL, fact checked journalism. The actually believe that Trump is not a con man and a complete fraud. They seem to think he cares about working class Americans, even though he clearly doesn't. A new study has found that because of Trump rallies, over 700 people have died from covid-19, and over 30,000 have been infected. It's insane that Trump feels no responsibility for the over 230,000 Americans who have died from Covid. Thank God Trump is going to be voted out of office over the next several days. America needs to heal. Finally, we will get the chance.

I've been up since 3am today and didn't know why. I think it's just a ridiculous amount of anxiety. I was never this concerned for my safety even during deployment to war. It's been an entire year of avoiding a pandemic already. And now there's a handful of Trumper terrorist plots caught just this week. I'm so tired.

I am glad I stumbled on this post.This man actually makes sense.

In a more sane universe, trump supporters would be legally obliged to watch this video.

The pen thing legitimately made me tear up. What an awful human being. I don't even have words. He seriously doesn't care about people at all. I really hope this country can be turned around. I still have my son schooling from home. I'm still able to work from home, thank goodness. You can't trust anyone but yourself, and having to rely on the rest of the country to see through this malarkey is absolutely terrifying. Hope everyone here has voted or plans to do so tomorrow.

Storytime from the Netherlands... One of my nieces' fiancee works security, this week he was working in a closed room with this guy who hadn't called in sick while catching COVID. The guy basically joked about how he got it while on duty with my niece's fiancee. Result is that the whole company is now having to be tested, as well as the client company that they were providing service to. The guy spreading it would've been a typical Trumpcultist had he been in the US. The guy's whole reply... "Well I'm not dead so clearly it's a hoax". Meanwhile my niece is now forced to stay with someone else (still in a light form of quarantine) while their kids who had already been in contact with their father that day are forced to stay at home with their father... their school which was only recently able to re-open after being declared covid-free got shut down again, and the two local stores where my niece and her fiancee do their groceries shut down even when they already had strict measures in place to previously be allowed to stay open. My elderly mother (who is nieces' grandmother) no longer able to get any visitors because oh, covid in the family... so we can't do her groceries anymore, can't help her keep her home clean, can't do shit if she slips and falls in the bathroom... because one fuckless fuckwith believes that it's just a hoax. Never before in my life have I wanted to visit gay men with covid so they could give it to me, just so I could pay that moron spreader a little romantic visit. Fuck these imbecils, if covid ever becomes a thing of the past I hope a bunch of big dudes with aids run a few trains on them... then tell them that aids is "just a hoax" too.

My dad was a doctor, we lost him to the virus in April. I know it’s not good to wallow in what-ifs but holy shit it kills me that a more responsible president could have at least helped him not die before I graduated college in June.
