I restored my grandfather's a few years ago. Lucky there was no pitting after 30 years in a barn. took it out to a wet 1000 finish. Just added another 2-1/2 to the collection. Working in it now.

That’s awesome! All the best axes are found in old barns 👍🏼

I just watched this video, the dog put it over the top. I recently found an axe like that at an estate sale for $3. It needs some work and a new handle. My question is about the head, it is marked in three lines of text "True Temper" "PERFECT" "Kelly Works". All the other ones on the interwebs look like yours. Is mine earlier?Later? Thank you for any information.

I'm sitting here enjoying your vid. I've got a Kelly that I'm restoring and it's got the ribs in the eye. Six ribs. That's going to be hard to hang that sucker. I'm thinking of grinding away the ribs about a quarter of an inch from the bottom of the eye so I can get the size of the eye started on the handle. Then I can get the general size of the eye started on the handle and then deal with the ribs. Have you ever had one of those to do? and thanks for your vid.

Hey Douglas, there are a few ways to skin that cat, I’ve hung quite an few with the ridges. You can just remove material as usual and those ridges will create valleys, you may need to remove a little more than usual, or you can use a triangle file and create a valley for each ridge. Both ways seem to work equally well. Thanks for the comments!

@@13CrowsVintageAxes I tend to overthink this stuff. I'll push on through to the other side (as Jim Morrison would say. I wonder if Jim ever hung an axe? Nah?

just get a small V gouge, put the head on the handle and gouge where the ribs make the mark...easy....easier than removing the signature True Temper ribs.
