I was staying in a hotel in L.A. a few years ago, and beside the main elevators in the lobby, there was a plaque that said, "these elevators were used in the filming of James Cameron's 1994 film 'True Lies' with Arnold Schwarzenegger." Arnold riding the horse through the hotel and into the elevator to chase the terrorist is one of my favorite over-the-top action scenes of the 90s, and I was thrilled I got to use the same elevator.

I fucking LOVE True Lies. One of the best advernture films ever made, if not the best. So glad you rated Paxton as the best in it. The man is a legend. And as for that bridge stunt, I spent two decades trying to see how they did it and to find out here that they actually just did it? Mental.

I think the harrier effects in this film are some of the best I've seen on film due to how well they've held up, compare it to a similar scene in Die Hard 4.0 & I still think this film pulled it off better. I think Arnie also gives one of his best performances in this movie, I have to admit it's not one my fave Arnie films but it's in the higher end, it's entertaining with both action & comedy what more do you want?

For an action/secret agent/James Bond spoof - True Lies is still today pretty damn epiq. I loved it from the start to the end. In particular when it "slows down" and you get the whole Arnold/Helen storie where we almost forget about the terrorists - then BAM here they are again and we're back in action-land. A bit like a cartoon but in the best possible way. James Cammeron has always been an amazing craftsman. He knows how to cut and edit a movie as well as pacing and rythm. True Lies is no exception :-)

I think the golden age of James Cameron's career was between (and including) The Terminator and True Lies. That's not to say his subsequent films were bad, often quite the opposite, but there's something special about those films which he hasn't quite been able to replicate. I do view Avatar as something of a low point, not counting Piranha 2 obviously. Even though the special effects really were mindblowing I wasn't impressed with the writing in the least bit.

@Oliver Harper, thanks for this nice analysis. I just realized something and its a bit of deja vu. The restroom scene in True Lies; it echos in many aspects to the T3 restroom scene done almost 10 years later. The thing is the scene in True Lies is all practical. It is so honest and real when juxtaposed to the CGI way of doing things with the digital restroom in T3. Computers have their place but clearly, when practical scenes are superior to CGI, what is the point then with using CGI? Sadly, Hollywood cannot answer this conundrum to my satisfaction.

RIP Bill Paxton. He was in a lot of James Cameron movie's. He was known for being an amazingly kind and funny guy in real life. He's directly responsible for "Alien's " being completed . The set was said to be extremely tense and stressed a between Cameron and the British set crew. It got to the point the Crew wouldn't work or listen to Cameron or producer Gail Ann Heard.Paxton was able to get everyone to reconcile and resume production

True Lies I consider as the last great Arnie movie, nothing he did afterwards was in the same league as his work before. The movie closes up Arnie's great run which started in earnest in 1984. The 10 years between 1984 and 1994 was the Arnie golden era.

I found the stripscene to be one of the bests in the film! Doubtless one of the best actionfilms to this date. However, I agree that the film do change focus in the plot. It makes very little scence to how the criminals found Harry!

Some quick thoughts: 1. Jamie Lee Curtis is just arch-perfect. 2. Tom Arnold is excellent. 3. Charlton Heston is brilliant and hillarious. 4. Bill Paxton is perfect. 5. Grant Heslov shines really bright in a relatively small role. 6. Art Malik is nailing his performance of the villain. 7. Arnie performs really well and is funny as never before / since. 8. The camera "low battery" scene kills me everytime I see it. 9. The striptease scene holds up even today and is really very sensible to both male and female audiences. Arnie's recorder malfunction is timed perfectly. All in all, this movie is amazing in being action-packed / ridiculous and funny at the same time. Thumbs up :-)

Mr and Mrs Smith is not nearly as close to this film as is Prizzi's Honor. True in the mafia film they are assassins and not secret agents but the 'feel' is similar. True Lies is super great. I love it for all the segments. The comedy. The drama. The relationship. The spy work. It was perfectly balanced. And that Harrier sequence in Miami is FLAWLESS and leaves one BREATHLESS.

The music on the build up to Arnie firing the missile through the building, is identical to the music on the buildup to the explosion at the end of Aliens. Is it the same piece of music, or just so similar my ears are deceiving me? Great review, as always! I saw True Lies at the cinema and got it on DVD. Always been up there are one of my fav Arnie films! Oddly, I never really took notice that it was James Cameron who directed it until this review lol. DOH!

James Horner recycled a lot of motifs across many movies. You'll hear them in Wolfen, Wrath of Khan, Aliens, True Lies, and to a lesser extent the Rocketeer, Willow and others. Not that this is a bad thing. But once you recognize them in one or two of his films, you will hear them in everything he ever did.

I seem to recall seeing a glitch in the special effects. In the scene where the Harrier takes off, the CGI fails to cover-up the static prop momentarily and edges of the stationary plane can be seen even as the moving CGI version overlaps it in the print.

Excellent summary and review of my 2nd fave Arnold movie (NOTHING will beat Conan the Barbarian) and one of fave action movies overall of all time as well. While I don't think Bill Paxton was quite as standout you do, he absolutely fulfilled his role in playing a scumbag the audience is supposed to dislike and who eventually gets his comeuppance from the hero. The whole 'wife wants a little adventure' part of the movie did indeed take up far too much time and could have flowed just as well with at least 10-15 mins worth of filler segments trimmed off from that alone. The real standout of this film to me is Tom Arnold. He plays the Comedic Sidekick role to absolute perfection. I never expected the guy to show such charisma and acting ability from what I saw of him on Roseanne. Blew me away, and from what i've heard blew many critics away too. It's a shame he couldn't turn that success into a bigger acting career. I don't think i've seen him in a movie since.

Both kickass movies for sure, and sit high in my list too. I think the reason I loved True Lies so much is because it completely exceeded my expectations. I didn't think it would be anywhere near as good as it was when I first heard that Arnold was going to be playing an American spy, hehehe.
