Jonathan Edwards playlist: kzread.info_play_list...
Jonathan Edwards - (1703-1758), American puritan theologian and philosopher
Edwards was born in East Windsor, Connecticut, to Timothy Edwards, pastor of East Windsor, and Esther Edwards. The only son in a family of eleven children, he entered Yale in September, 1716 when he was not yet thirteen and graduated four years later (1720) as valedictorian. He received his Masters three years later.
As a youth, Edwards was unable to accept the Calvinist sovereignty of God. He once wrote, "From my childhood up my mind had been full of objections against the doctrine of God's sovereignty... It used to appear like a horrible doctrine to me." However, in 1721 he came to the conviction, one he called a "delightful conviction." He was meditating on 1 Timothy 1:17, and later remarked, "As I read the words, there came into my soul, and was as it were diffused through it, a sense of the glory of the Divine Being; a new sense, quite different from any thing I ever experienced before... I thought with myself, how excellent a Being that was, and how happy I should be, if I might enjoy that God, and be rapt up to him in heaven; and be as it were swallowed up in him for ever!" From that point on, Edwards delighted in the sovereignty of God. Edwards later recognized this as his conversion to Christ.
In 1727 he was ordained minister at Northampton and assistant to his maternal grandfather, Solomon Stoddard. He was a student minister, not a visiting pastor, his rule being thirteen hours of study a day. In the same year, he married Sarah Pierpont, then age seventeen, daughter of James Pierpont (1659--1714), a founder of Yale, originally called the Collegiate School. In total, Jonathan and Sarah had eleven children.
Solomon Stoddard died on February 11th, 1729, leaving to his grandson the difficult task of the sole ministerial charge of one of the largest and wealthiest congregations in the colony. Throughout his time in Northampton his preaching brought remarkable religious revivals. Jonathan Edwards was a key figure in what has come to be called the First Great Awakening of the 1730s and 1740s.
Yet, tensions flamed as Edwards would not continue his grandfather's practice of open communion. Stoddard, his grandfather, believed that communion was a "converting ordinance." Surrounding congregations had been convinced of this, and as Edwards became more convinced that this was harmful, his public disagreement with the idea caused his dismissal in 1750.
Edwards then moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, then a frontier settlement, where he ministered to a small congregation and served as missionary to the Housatonic Indians. There, having more time for study and writing, he completed his celebrated work, The Freedom of the Will (1754).
Edwards was elected president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) in early 1758. He was a popular choice, for he had been a friend of the College since its inception and was the most eminent American philosopher-theologian of his time. On March 22, 1758, he died of fever at the age of fifty-four following experimental inoculation for smallpox and was buried in the President's Lot in the Princeton cemetery beside his son-in-law, Aaron Burr.

Jesus said that if you abide in him, and his word remains in you, you can ask whatever it is you wish and it will be given you. I've recently been asking the Lord to give me the hunger and thirst for his righteousness and to love his word, and guess what -he did it! I have a newly found joy in the Lord that grows more and more daily. I Ask him for that hunger, and depend on him to sustain the hunger. It's then I realize I can call him my everything. Ask him for that precious gift! He will give it to you.

Just following up on what I said earlier and I'm still overwhelmed on a daily basis by how the Lord gives us the blessing of a heart of contrition towards our sin. I love how, as I go along with the Lord, I become more aware of my sin and more contrite and more broken and therefore more thankful and more joyful than ever before, and what's even more is through that brokenness and then gratitude comes further sanctification and spiritual growth in holiness, being closer and closer to Him through this wonderful work of the Holy Spirit of God.

I was at work listening to this sermon with my earbuds as I was working. When the sermon was over the next sermon that popped up on the KZread channel was from Joyce Meyer. I started to turn it off but I thought I’d give it a listen for a while. It was like going from filet mignon to a bag of skittles lol. Her sermon was all about “me”. What God can do for you or is going to do for you. Extremely self centered. When you hear a sermon like this compared to what we have today the difference is night and day.

Preachers of the past are my preferred audio teaching . GOD always has a remnant, so there has always been sound teachers. William Arbuckle (1600's), Charles Spurgeon (1800's), A.W. Tozer(1900's) , and so, so many more! And Puritan teachers cut deep and with ease. Anointed teaching. Bless this Ministry for their content.

@@TheRealRenn Well Samuel heard God many of the prophets of God Adam and Eve heard God In terms of hearing God It comes in different forms there is a rare audible form of hearing God. The download of God meaning do you know something you didn’t know before there is their intuition signs and wonders confirmations from other ppl saying the same word to you over and over again These are all forms of God speaking There is more ways than just those that’s an example. Feeling God Also comes in different forms goosebumps crying and weeping feeling his presence often his presence feels like heat The Bible says that God is a consuming fire the heat of his presence is felt when you are connecting yourself to him do you want scripture The apostles of God carried such anointing which can be translated into presence of God to deliver demons set the captives free captives Heal the sick even raised that God has used me to do many miracles such as this. On a regular basis living a devoted life consecrated life is a must the Bible says you can do nothing of yourself you need God the Bible says Jesus is the vine we are the branches with out him we cannot bear good fruit but later on it says with Him we can do all things. Relationship with God is the basis of Christianity trust loyalty belief faith love hope fearlessness boldness and courage it’s all part of the walk. Don’t fall for religion it is a form of godliness but it denies the power of God and in the end it’s dead works that don’t produce life eternal

@@proof2.073 , Thank you for the reply. I am reminded of the letter to the Hebrews Chapter 1 where it says; “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;” …. and with that being said, I will leave emotion and experience out of the equation, which in my opinion is the go-to for many of our modern day Churches, and go strictly with what God’s Word says to the body of Christ, and that being in these last days, if we want to know what God says we should read what He said, and if we want to hear what God said, then we should read it aloud.

I love the supernatural essence of knowing Him in a tangible way so I agree with you on His word being essential but if you took away the supernatural you would have a Pharisee mindset on we know how Jesus dealt with them . Your comment reminded me of when I was a new believer and became aware of my pride through reading "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis. I asked Jesus to remove my pride. He showed me a picture of a plant in a pot and when he pulled out the plant, almost all the soil came with it because of all the roots. He said, "Pride has a long, deep root - all the way back to the Garden of Eden. If I removed it all at once, there wouldn't be anything left." I knew then that it would be a very long process to overcome pride. So confess it every day and be patient with Him. He is faithful. Walk with Him. Trust Him. He WILL get the job done.

When you fast you are denying your body one of its most needed need which is food and this humbles your body to become silent and your flesh to become quiet and your spirit which is in connection to God is able to operate with greater power. Keep in mind this was preached at the time of the first great awakening and Edwards in particular had a keen interest in the genuine convert vs the false with the extraordinary numbers that were responding to the gospel at the time. Therefore, sermons, as God obviously used mightily, we’re “crafted” with the particular gifting of Edwards to decipher between what he would called “affections” and “affectations” for God or a true spiritual understanding of the loveliness of Christ in hatred of sin or a mere fanatical emotionalism that dies out as they eventually go back to the world and sin. He spent a great deal of time with “new converts” to make sure they understood the gospel over a period of at least months of professed faith. This was no “easy believism” of our day. Thanks for reading the sermon!

"Therefore it is this seeing the loveliness of Christ that makes the difference between the saving grace of the Holy Spirit and the experiences of demons. This sight or sense is what makes true christian experience different from everything else. The faith of God's elect people is based on this. When a person sees the excellence of the gospel he senses the beauty and loveliness of the divine scheme of salvation, his mind is convinced that it is of God and he believes it with all his heart." This part was so clarifying and edifying, and brought back memories. Thank you for this.

What Edwards says about 'experiences' reminds me of something that several highly suspect people like Bill Johnson claim, which is that they felt a huge surge of electricity passing through them, incapacitating them for hours. Why would anyone automatically presume that this is the work of the Holy Spirit when the demonic realm is perfectly capable of supernatural phenomena?

It is the LOVE OF SIN that keeps us from salvation! I CANNOT clearly see the beauty of Christ "for we see as looking through a dark glass" or dirty window. Do I have to wait till I can come up with a vision of the beauty of Christ before saying, "Lord, have mercy on me a sinner?" That seems like a works salvation right there! BUT, I CAN see the ugliness & destruction of even the "smallest" of my sins much more clearly, that's glaringly obvious as that's where I live! And though I fail, I ABHOR/DETEST my sin & want nothing more than to have NO part in ANYTHING evil. I am eternally grateful for the blood of Christ that cleanses us from all sin and washes us white as snow! I'm grateful for 1 John 1:9 when I do sin. You may call this "self love". Well, "no man ever hated himself". The hatred for sin, too, is an evidence of salvation. Plenty of religious people talk about the "beauty of Christ" and may have some "picture of him" hanging in their home or church, but they care nothing of having His beauty in their own lives! To say a person can't be saved until he has a clear vision of the beauty of Christ is like saying a blind person can't be healed until he can first clearly see! Heal me first, THEN I can see!

What if I don’t feel convicted? Bad bad bad What do I do, what if I die? How do I not sin anymore? Like how do I forgive and have a forgiving heart? Like how can my heart be softened, what do I do? I have to feel convicted when I sin right, don’t I? What do I do? How do I feel convicted every single time I sin? How do I get out of sin like how do I forgive? How come I’m not feeling guilty or and convicted? Like is the Holy Spirit still with me?

Thank you Lord you do have a few faithful Elijah's: Paul Washer, Vodie Baucham, Alistair Begg, James Coates (Greacelife of Edmonton), John MacArthur (except for his teaching on the Sabbath), RC Sproul, Sinclair Ferguson, W. Hey brother. You should wonder about your salvation. I praise God he keeps us on our toes. Always testing. Always teaching. Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. We are in the hands of a mighty God! He is the Shaper, the Author, the Alpha and the Omega. Job 12:7 But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: 12:8 Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. 12:9 Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? 12:10 In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. Jesus died because of us, and when we look upon the cross, it is a mirror that reminds us what we deserve. Yet, God is full of Mercy. Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 2:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. So we love God with all our hearts, and he works in us the perfecting and conforming of our hearts unto the image of his son, in whom he is well pleased. 2 Peter 1:17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. We love God by being obedient to his commands, but we are powerless with Christ to do ANYTHING that can please God the Father. John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. We are sons of God, but a son of God is elected as such. A son of God will be chastised (punished for the purpose of correction), that he will be properly conformed and perfected for the Glory of God!!! God takes the raising of his sons seriously. He doesn't ALWAYS punish of course, but our walk will not be without blemish. Hebrews 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 12:6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 12:7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 12:8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 12:10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. 12:12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 12:13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. So we are STILL. We wait in earnest expectation for the perfect WILL of GOD to perform works in us, that our lives will be to the GLORY of GOD the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ!!! Psalms 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Pray for continued obedience Michael. It is the only thing we can pray for with any true fervency. When we love God, we obey his commands. When we obey his commands we also love others. When we love others, we are full of good works. Obedience and loyalty to God are likely the greatest blessing outside of our Lord Jesus we could hope for. 2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 1:7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1:9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: Keep wondering sir. Your wondering is a Gift from God. Your wondering keeps you seeking the ALL IN ALL with all your heart. Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. IN ALL THINGS GIVE GLORY TO GOD. IN ALL THINGS ARE THE GLORY OF GOD!! May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ bless and nourish your days if it be his will to do so sir.

1 Timothy 3:6 is about Overseers and Deacons. It has little to nothing to do with the message. For people who struggle with thinking that they should be changed completely and immediately, this is extremely detrimental! For example, are not new believers hardly distinguishable from non believers? Are there not stages of spiritual growth? This sermon seems to say that once you believe in Christ as your Savior, you will always walk by the Spirit and never by the flesh; never giving to fleshly pleasures and sin. Or, am I missing something?

The subject at hand is pride, which is why 1 Tim 3:6 is cited. @ 40:34 the text reads: "False spiritual experiences have a tendency to cause pride, which is the devil's special sin. 'He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil.'" (1 Tim 3:6) 1 Timothy 3:6 and not a new convert, so that he will not become conceited and fall into the condemnation incurred by the devil. (NASB)

Where I humbly believe you may be misunderstanding Edwards is in the definition of the word "distinguished." The distinction is not in quantity - as you have placed it, but in quality or kind. The experience of "devils" or close hypocrites is not that he has less good works than a truly regenerate sinner, but that all his good works are poisoned because there is no affection to God whom he supposes his good works are done for. This will manifest itself in time. There is no self-abhorring, no groaning being burdened, no real flesh lusting against the spirit, because there is no "law of the Spirit" present in someone who is still at bottom unregenerate. No proper inclinations, no holy affections, and no spiritual mindedness. NONE. So, take the least saint keenly aware that his good works are sin stained, still the least of such saints has that makes it a live spiritual plant is the fruit of the Spirit - love. Week as it may be, it is the immediate affect of a change in the governing disposition of the soul.

Behold, the Lamb of God… he tried… but he failed and now needs us to do him a solid and return to living under the law and the Old Covenant. Because as it turns out, the blood of Christ wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Christianity is state of being “of Christ” as an act of Christ. christianity (lower case) is the pretension that we have a hand in it. Coupled with the delusion that we can fulfill the law. God did it and it is finished. Amen?

One question. I am of the mind that Demons and fallen angels cannot be redeemed even though they believe in God because they were never Given a kinsman redeemer because of the blatant blasphemous nature of their rebellion against God. God never sent a savior for them. Mankind being Born of water and the flesh God sent to us Christ Jesus so that by believing we might be saved. Now i fully understand that a simple rudimentary acquiescence as to the existence of God or jesus does not equal saving faith. But then Abraham simply believed God and God saved Abraham. God knows the weakness and inability of man to do anything to remedy his situation and so has preordained that By believing man can be saved. I also understand fully that Genuine saving faith produces fruits of repentance , hatred for sin , Prayer , a knowing that the Bible is true ,and obedience. as well as peace , Love , joy , grace , forgiveness , patience , longsuffering and humility to one degree or another. Because the antinomianist who Claims Christ and yet throws the bible away and carry's on following the world the flesh and the devil is by no means saved , but will suffer in hell along with those who openly Reject Gods Word made flesh in Christ Jesus. I would appreciate a few thoughts on this.

All the wicked will perceive is His wrath, like a criminal doesn't see the authority, power, justice, knowledge of good and evil, and all the characteristics of a moral and right judge. So too the wicked will know that God is Almighty but will only see that in the Just and Right and True judgement that they are evil and deserve eternal punishment. Be careful about "spiritual experience", Satan who can mimic a light and loves to give false "feelings" and "experiences" that they claim with genuine sincerity, devotion, spiritual godly truth and yet be fully deceived, totally wrong and these devotes are the most difficult to show them their evil ways as they are sure they are right, be it LDS, JW, RCC, Pentecostals, and even "Protestants" . The devoted atheist is just as certain about their rightness, but don't attach it to any "spiritual" attachment, so they call their godness different names but blasphemy never the less and it will only when they are confronted with God at judgement will they know His eternal wrath is what is in order of eternal justice.

Only those that live by the law of liberty James 1:25 are true Christians. Everything else is a form of godliness that denies God's power. Problem is no one knows what the law of liberty is. Not a single person. Don't believe me? Ask around. Ask anybody. See I told you

  • @benwalsh5840

The way to know if one is a true Christian is if that person adheres to the law of liberty. James 1:25. The law of liberty is involved with hearing the living word of God and obeying what it means. It is the only way to be saved. It is different than merely assenting to the existence of Jesus to find salvation. I don't know does Jonathon edwards teach the law of liberty. If he doesn't it means he is a false teacher along with everyone else.
