If we don't hear what God says from our pastors, then we will have to turn to the Petersons, Pragers, Shapiros, and others out there. I've become disillusioned with Prager and the Daily Wire (though I still like Peterson). Honestly I see them as not conservative enough, but essentially as right-liberals. I think conservatives and especially Christians need better representatives to the popular culture. I think the Davenant institute is doing especially good work here but we need more lay-level Burkean conservative/ national conservative/ post-liberal social commentators.

Long gone are the Wm F Buckley Jr and the Barry Goldwater types. Unfortunately, actual "conservative leadership" in the US been an abysmal failure. Every GOP president since Teddy Roosevelt has had at least 1 recession. 4 GOP presidents had 2 recessions. Ike had 3 recessions. 10 of the most recent recessions occurred when a GOP was president and from their policies. Every economic crisis and catastrophe for over 100 years has occurred because of GOP economic policies. It is also a fact that the states that have the highest populations of "Christian conservatives" lead the nation in infant mortality, maternal mortality, obesity, violent crime, teen pregnancy, poverty and many other societal ills directly caused by their leadership. These reasons (and many others) have caused believers (like myself) and non-believers alike to conclude, we are better off without Christian leadership in politics.

5 signs a society is about to collapse, taken from How Then Shall We Live? by Francis Schaeffer (who took them from The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon): 1. A mounting love of show and luxury that is affluence. 2. A widening gap between the very rich and the very poor. 3. An obsession with sex and sexuality. 4. Freakishness in the arts masquerading as orginality. 5. An increased desire to live off the state. 4 signs that a society is about to breakdown, taken from "The state of public affairs" (1731) by Jonathan Edwards: 1. A society is invaded by a foreign army, threatened by their own supreme government, or are their own enemies through foolishness and poor management. 2. Government frequently changing more likely leads to societal instability. 3. When there is no unified power and authority in government but instead there are multiple powers and authorities with their own agendas or with competing agendas in government. 4. When there is strife between different persons and parties for the power of government.

Your examination of this sermon by Edwards was fascinating. You may also find interesting a piece that appeared around the same time as Schaffer’s called ‘The Fate of Empires’ by Sir John Glubb. He also died in the mid-80’s, around the same time as Schaffer. He divided the total trajectory of an empire into several ages and noted that nearly every empire in history has followed some variation of this model. It starts with the Age of Pioneers in which a people first settle a place and begin building and growing on the land. This causes a population outburst in the area due to people settling permanently in a new place. From there the ages are: Conquest, Commerce, Affluence, Intellect and Decadence. Glubb goes on to describe the Age of Decadence in every empire throughout history as being marked by pessimism, defensiveness, materialism, frivolity, an influx of foreigners, the rise of a welfare state, a weakening of religion, selfishness, the loss of a sense of duty and an obsession with eroticism. Sound familiar? One can’t help but wonder if Edwards, Schaffer and Glubb are either laughing or crying in their graves. Glubb’s essay is available as a free pdf these days and can be found pretty easily. In recent years, it has been finding a new audience.

Schaefer sees affluence as a mania for things, possessions, not just wealthy things. It may already be too late but the point Schaefer makes is that when a society puts humanism (makes man the center of all things) as the rule for society then the inescapable result is a decline into chaos, violence, and a total collapse of society. When God is center you have absolutes, morals, that provide a firm foundation for society. When humanism is the central rule of law there is no firm foundation because everything is subjective and different from one person to the other. Lacking any stabilizing factors, demise is the eventual result! That’s the thumbnail version.

For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. There has always been a client nation throughout history which has had the honor of custodianship of God’s Word and in particular presenting the Gospel to a lost and condemned humanity. The United States has been God’s client nation for over two hundred years, but with this sudden, recent turn for the worst, that may be over now if we do not repent.

I also read many of Shaeffer's works. Then I studied theology and philosophy from primary sources (rather that commentators like Shaeffer) for many years. What i found was many many inaccuracies in Shaeffer's works. I understand he was writing for "the masses" but too many of the inaccuracies were (for me) unforgivable. Eventually i gave them all away to a charity. By the way "rational Christianity" has been tried many times, it has failed every time.

@@manager0175 By “rational”, I’m meaning that “it has to make sense”. The simple Truths of God made Man, Man fell from Grace, God provided a way to redeem Man, and the process of accepting that redemption explains the 4 big questions in life: • Where did we come from? • Where are we going (ultimately) • What is the meaning of Life? • How does one live morally? Those questions are answered by Christianity and Schaeffer provide(d) a framework for discussion

Someone once said civilization is about 4 meals away from collapse. We've weathered worse before. There is a difference. Before, we had no social media, no internet. So we stood up and fought. These days far too many Americans have become fat, lazy and spineless. Content to simply whine on social media. So if we, as a people, are too weak-willed to turn our devices off, and stand up and confront those who ARE the problem, our society will most definitely fall and we will have deserved it. You all know who is at the root of our destruction. What will you do about it - sit there and whine?

Carroll Quigley, a US historian, wrote _The Evolution of Civilizations_ in 1961. He argued that for a civilization to endure, it must have fundamental cohesion within it respecting a number of key features These, according to Quigley, are: intellectual, religious, social, economic, political [and military]. Not that everyone will agree on the details, but that there is agreement as to the form these take, and of the rules of engagement. If there is a break down in cohesion regarding any or a number of these features, the civilization is in danger of dissolution. Quiley gave some evidence of his contempt for the middle class of America in his book _Tragedy and Hope_ (1965), and in a recording the he made in the 1970s, he expressed his concern that the West was doomed.

Very thoughtful study, Matt. Edwards would have known the English Civil Wars and the Glorious Revolution, which informed the War of Independence. The Bible has many passages on predestination. So, if earlier editions of the Institutes were not as complete as later edtions, what does that have to do with the fact that the Bible is the final authority? Secondly, Calvin is not the only Reformer to emphasize Augustinian predestination. Jerome Zanchius and Martin Luther are just two. One key point to keep in mind when pondering this topic is that God is always using cycles of depravity reprobation rebuke and repentance to continually renew the church and then that has the effect on society of being salt and light. Far too many see these signs of degradation and assume things are linear and never going to change for the better, when history really doesn't bear that out. The kingdoms of this world are falling - and they're falling to the power of the risen reigning King Jesus Christ. I guess you might say there's a continual flow of destruction but that it is the overthrowing of Satan's deceptions & working creatively to build the church as people both as people groups nations or even locals, states and counties are becoming more consistent with the truth - while at the same time other groups are becoming more consistent with the lies that are their own undoing ! Look no further than the fact that in the C0VIDIOCY episode that was foisted upon us for the last 2 to 3 years, different parts of America responded by either falling to the fear and locking down hard and basically destroying their society and others - like here in the Bible Belt South, we actually stayed free and open and retrenched our commitment to freedom, liberty, & constitutional principle and the bill of rights. I know because I was at the forefront of that and our county sheriff declared our county and Texas to be putting freedom first and foremost and not allowing globalist or corporate control systems to dominate our society ! How refreshing that was ! Truly this was the gospel commitment to the rule of law and to truth in daily practical life. Whereas, the pagan blue big cities all responded in fear and hurt many of their citizens and ruined much of their society - the long term the wreckage of which remains today ! God bless you brother and Jesus name Amen.
