R.C. Sproul: Eternity

Right now truly does count forever, and the choices we make today have eternal consequences. In this message, Dr. R.C. Sproul reminds us not only of the importance of our present thoughts, words, and deeds, but also of the fact that all that happens today is part of God’s plan to make known His glory in history and leads ultimately to the revelation of His glory to His children into all eternity.

Not even ten minutes in and the guy shows he clearly knows his Kant. I gotta say, as both a Bible-believing, born again by God's grace alone Christian, and as a Philosophy minor, I'm thoroughly impressed by this guy. He's hitting all the reasons I hate about today's "post-modern" society, Darwinism, and Socialism/Communism. Without God, we think that everything's relative. As a Christian, I'm an essential Realist. That means I believe in Absolute Truth, and the Eternal God of Truth Who is Truth Himself (see John 14:6). Needless to say, that's not a popular view these days. So be it. We weren't called to be popular.

Wouldn't trusting god be a work of FREE WILL! Isn't that a no no? I don't think John Calvin would approve of a work like that. John Calvin said. Of this, the very term in question [free will] furnishes too strong a proof…I think the abolition of it would be of great advantage to the Church. I am unwilling to use it myself; and others, if they will take my advice, will do well to abstain from it.” (John Calvin, Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 2, Chapter 2, Paragraphs 7-8) There is no FREE WILL so how can we trust John Calvin said “…it is very wicked merely to investigate the causes of God’s will. For his will is, and rightly ought to be, the cause of all things that are.”…”For God’s will is so much the highest rule of righteousness that whatever he wills, by the very fact that he wills it, must be considered righteous. When, therefore, one asks why God has so done, we must reply: because he has willed it. But if you proceed further to ask why he so willed, you are seeking something greater and higher than God’s will, which cannot be found.” (John Calvin, Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 3, Chapter 23, Paragraph 1) “…we say that God once established by his eternal and unchangeable plan those whom he long before determined once for all to receive into salvation, and those whom, on the other hand, he would devote to destruction…he has barred the door of life to those whom he has given over to damnation.” (John Calvin, Institutes of Christian Religion, Book 3, Chapter 21, Paragraph 7) Because man has no FREE WILL we are little more than puppets just like John Piper says on his website. Quote: "God . . . brings about all things in accordance with his will. In other words, it isn’t just that God manages to turn the evil aspects of our world to good for those who love him; it is rather that he himself brings about these evil aspects for his glory (see Ex. 9:13-16; John 9:3) and his people’s good (see Heb. 12:3-11; James 1:2-4). This includes-as incredible and as unacceptable as it may currently seem-God’s having even brought about the Nazis’ brutality at Birkenau and Auschwitz as well as the terrible killings of Dennis Rader and even the sexual abuse of a young child . . ." TRUTH IN LOVE

Moved to tears by RC’s brilliant, simple argument for the eternality of God and thus the value of each moment of our temporal existence. By the grace of God and in Christ alone I am not frightened to death to see my maker when the last appointed grain in my hour glass is gone. Remnants of secularism still in my bones were exposed and frightened to discomfort. Lord have mercy on us all!

Judy,a habit I have used in my life is to practice, due to my belief that Brother RC is a gift. A precious gift from God. When I read the Bible, and study it. I will use time stamps God has created to discern that for example: John 1:1-2. IN The beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and The Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. I firstly must say, that there is not any form of a mistake in your comments, nor especially The Written Words Inspired by God. I always change the “ was” to is. It is a choice I make to help me remember that our Triune God is not bound by time. So in my own mind I believe RC is a gift. We can watch him preach today. We can see Jesus today. We can hear The Holy Spirit today. Now. Without any ceasing. I must add, there is not any error at all in John 1:1-2 because as written According To Jesus Christ. Time was used to bring back to life what truthfully transpired. But especially in John 1:1-14 we know Our Triune God is not subject to time. I could try and delight myself in how I perceive myself. That is not at all my point. In this context just knowing without hesitation that Pastor is Because God is,and always will be🙂

So what does it profit a man to question the universe, the ins and outs and physics of our world? So what does it profit a man to study, praise, seek to know and embrace the living God. To passionately devote their lives exploring God's infinite wonders, thoughts and ways? This world is only here for a short time, our God is eternal. Man got in trouble by wanting answers to questions already answered but doubted by the enemies deception. Look what that got us; death. Have we not learnt? Salvation through faith ,grace and repentance is all we need to know. Song of songs tells us that without our beloved we have nothing. To find Him all we need to do is praise Him. Describe Him. Our salvation is always tending his garden; going about His Father's work/will. What else do we need?

To give us such a macro journey into complicated themes, cosmology, theology, ontology with background bibliography, and anecdotes like the Carl Sagan letter and response was fascinating. But what’s a sermon without an application? His ending , the last 10minutes leading to the subject of time in view of the certainty of eternity put the fear of God afresh into my soul. Yes RC great preacher but…. For crying out loud, his congregations have absolutely no interest in evangelizing. They say, since they are Calvinists, there’s no need. And RC and his designated assistant and current pastors act indifferent to His Great Commission. 😢

I thank God for R C Sproul. Such a brilliant mind. I have never heard of such a ‘simple’ yet so deep and convincing ‘argument’ - in fact Proof - about eternity, as R C Sproul says so clearly: If there is a here ‘now’ there must be an eternity, otherwise, the ‘now’ must be gone as soon as it is contemplated. All our experiences must have a ‘meaning’ only because eternity exists. God Bless Legonier ministries.

Thank you for the video. Dr. Sproul is blessed indeed, now being in the presence of the Lord. It is difficult to describe the immutable, all-powerful, all-loving, God, Who can exist in eternity and the individual heart of the believer at the same time! How awesome He is! 🕊

This includes-as incredible and as unacceptable as it may currently seem-God’s having even brought about the Nazis’ brutality at Birkenau and Auschwitz as well as the terrible killings of Dennis Rader and even the sexual abuse of a young child . . ." Amen, and praise God for his marvelous works, some of which are given through men such as this. I loved this man for his joyous human side, but more so for his revelation of the scriptures, both old and new. He had an extrodinary gift. Such gifts make me weep for joy as I come to understand the truth of Gods holy word. Thank you Lord.

In a post that I wrote a few days after Dr. Sproul died I made comparisons to him by naming great Christian theologians such as Jonathan Edwards. And in my mind I could see folks shaking their collective heads and saying, "R.C. Sproul was no Jonathan Edwards." I saw myself answering, "That may be true. But then again, Jonathan Edwards was no R.C. Sproul." And, as Steve Brown would say, "Yoooooooou think about that..... Amen."

I am currently delving into Jonathan Edwards because of RC Sproul...RC was highly impressed with Edwards...two very distinct men united with a passion for the great divide of God’s holiness and man’s sin nature...they knew who they were and they knew who God is.
