R.C. Sproul: If God Is Sovereign, How Can Man Be Free?

The Scriptures teach that God is sovereign over all. The Scriptures also teach that man is responsible for his actions. Are the two teachings contradictory? In this session Dr. R.C. Sproul will address the perennial questions surrounding the relation between the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man.

My aunt Norma was a follower of R.C Sproul. She was saved as a young girl in a Sunday School classroom. She married and they had four children. Fast forward 20 years, and her firstborn daughter marries and two years later her husband is killed in an automobile accident. Three years later her 13 year old little girl dies from Reye's Syndrome and then two years later their only son joins the US Air Force after graduating from high school and he is killed in a motorcycle accident. Several years later we were alone for a few moments at a family reunion and I told Aunt Norma that I admired her more than any other woman on earth. She was astonished when I said that and asked me why I admired her so much. I said because you never abandoned your faith in God, you stayed the course. She said "All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose. To believe that God is not sovereign and that He is not the almighty God of love will make you bitter and hateful." She is with her Savior now and her loved ones also.

I'm sorry to hear about your. You stay strong inverted within the Lord and his word. No matter what suffering but we go through trials and tribulations and our life. I know there's some things we're not going to understand in life. Why did God take my family or why God couldn't save one of my family members from but I know that the Lord knows all things from the beginning. Our human minds are limited by our capabilities. I know that the Lord is going to work everything out for good even the looks bad. We have to do our best as true Christians to stay away from evil and to keep ourselves walking with the Lord day by day. Isaiah 41:10 fear not for I am with you be not dismayed before I am your God I will spank that you I will help you I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Amen amen! LORD bless you brother, and what a marvelous testimony, that even through such calamity and suffering, you have borne witness to such strength and fortitude and perseverance in our Lord Jesus Christ. Even though alllll the noetic effects of the fall of Man do indeed affect us in all sorts of TERRIBLE TERRIBLE ways, our Father in heaven is so incredibly gracious and kind to reveal Himself to us in His word and His son Jesus. In the book of Isaiah, I think in the 9th chapter, the words of YHWH Himself (😍) is said to have been recorded, saying "Fear not for I am With you; be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. " And in another passage, I believe in James, it reads as follows: "count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds. For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And then, let steadfastness have its full effect, making you perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." And of course, one of my very favorites, found in one of Paul's letters to the church he founded in thessalonica, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances..."Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for THIS (nonspecific, meaning WHATSOEVER this might be) is the will of God in Christ Jesus FOR YOU” Lord bless you brother.

@@taylor-gq4rg Thank you Brother. "All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure." Ephesians 1:3-5.

Great blessing can come out of great sorrow. Covid for a lot of people brought fear and uncertainty. I was out of work and at home when God called me back to himself. I discovered R.C and John MacArthur and it became so clear how profound and alive the word of God is. I was raised in the word of faith and prosperity “gospel”. Listening to the word of God in its correct context and meaning was so life changing. I’m more than blessed to know the true Gospel of my lord and savior Jesus Christ.

I would hear John on the radio and it would hurt and sting to hear his words explaining the Scriptures. My heart was convicted, and I truly gave it to the Lord at the age of 56. @@df224 I called Grace To You and ask them about this. They said actually sent me something in the mail, explaining what John meant. I think he might regret having said that, but his point was any heart that is truly repented has the ability to be saved. Because nobody completely sold out to the devil can be truly repentant. I think that might’ve been his point. No one is going to sell out to the devil and then turn around and repent. Too bad that was confusing for many and me as well. But I think his main point was if you can call upon the Lord, the Lord says anyone who calls on him, he will not cast away. It was probably not a great idea to mix it with that mark of the beast. God bless you and it’s so great to hear RC preach.

To whom it may concern: For several months now I've been struggling with this issue and have sought out debates, talks, messages, letters, documents, etc..., anything that may help me reach a conclusion for myself. Not what was taught to me as a child, not what I was raised up around and to believe, but I desired to form my own opinion on my own and found my answer through this message. I'm not sure who RC Sproul is except a preacher of course, but I've never heard the man before this video and I watched every second of it and I'm convinced God is Sovereign above all else. The way he described what free will is "Self-Law" / "Self-Rule" made it easy for me to understand and comprehend it all for myself. Maybe that's not profound for many of you who got it 50 years ago I know, but it did wonders for me:)

People need to stop thinking that God doesn't want you to have adversity. Having adversity is inextricably linked to picking up your cross and following Jesus. I hear many people wax on and on about how God loves us unconditionally, and that couldn't be further from the truth. How can God judge us if he loves us unconditionally? How can he even love us if he loves us unconditionally? He can't. That is the biggest snare in the church right now. We all must come to terms with the fact that God expects us to have adversity, and there's nothing he can do about it. This life is short, and compared with eternal life, I believe we can deal with our cross.

  • @sold4ChristJ

    2 жыл бұрын

@@georgeluna9729 God loves you fellow believer in Christ Jesus. I know this sounds very cruel and unjust of God to predestinate some people to hell and others to heaven and I get that, I do; it kind of makes God look bad and we would never want that. You and I we both have solid confidence in the goodness of God and in His Holiness. There was a time I was very much against this doctrine but now I thank God for graciously revealing His attributes to me. I therefore urge you and plead with you to not let your prejudice rob you of the divine knowledge of His attributes. I do admire your zeal for His name. Coming back to your question. ( Does God choose some people for heaven and others for hell ? ) if you really think about it and ponder on this question, what you are trying to say here is that God shouldn't choose someone's destination or God shouldn't choose to send me to heaven/hell. It indirectly implies that I should choose or I should 'deserve' heaven or hell inorder to go there. Well, no one deserves heaven and everyone deserves hell. God is being gracious to me and to you by showing His mercy and His Love in the Cross of Christ. And this grace was justified by crucifying Christ on our behalf, we escaped rightly deserved wrath which Christ endured for us thats why it says, 'that He might be Just and the Justifier' ( Romans 3:26 ). On the other hand, when God sends people to hell He is again being just because they justly deserve hell like we did before we got saved. Both His Love for us the undeserving and His wrath for the deserving is just. So you see God is not choosing for them to go to hell, they are choosing it for themselves ( Roman 1:18-32 ) but for us God is choosing to be merciful for He says, 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion' ( Exodus 33:19 and Romans 9:15 ) Roman 9 is terrifyingly beautiful chapter. So by not choosing to be merciful for some, is God predestinating them to hell ? you might ask, and for that my friend please please read about God's sovereignty, infact this video must have cleared many such doubts. I pray that you read and study about His attributes, this has given me the most joy. The Bible verses you requested as given by Dr John Piper on his podcast - ( Ephesians 1:11 , Proverbs 16:4 , 1 Peter 2:7-8 , Jude 4 , 2 Peter 2:3 , Romans 9:11 , Romans 9:22 ) Roman 1 and 9 will help. I will end with this, I understand if some doctrine hurts our understanding of God we reject it by becoming defensive. I would say let His word defend Him. Sometimes it is beyond our understanding and it is our inability to grasp the magnitude of His attributes that clouds our judgement. With much prayer and help from the Holy Spirit Christ becomes more beautiful and His word more Loving. No one can find fault in Him. 'This God-his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true' ( Psalm 18-30 )

Thank You R C Sproul. In the fullness of time, God prevails. I have been wrestling with this idea for a long time. If someone can explain how God could allow Eve to rebel and go against the word of God, then I can believe man does not have free will. While he was explaining the story of Joseph and his brothers it came to me. It was the word, "Before the foundation of the world". Eternity did not begin with Genesis chapter one verse one. Eternity IS! Satan was thrown out of heaven before that. He was present in the garden before Adam. God did not create something void and without form. There was evil and God wanted to deal with it. Satan had the power to choose while yet the covering Cherub. He chose to elevate himself to be equal with the sovereign God. That is what caused war in Heaven and he, and those that followed him were thrown out of their first estate. Man is created for good works, and that is to follow God and be instruments in his hand. To overcome evil, not by the strength of man, but by being willing to allow the sovereignty of God work through him. Yes, I can by my fallen nature resist but God will prevail. Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

I love Sproul. He never ceases to capture my heart with his messages. I love Sproul’s delivery of the story and principles from Joseph, and how he artfully connects it to the larger story. However, on the main point regarding God’s sovereignty and man’s freedom or free will, did anyone notice an equivocation? He used the story of the Garden of Eden to illustrate that man’s freedom is limited, and God is “more free” than human beings, but later he used this “less-free / more-free” idea to say that this means man cannot choose good or choose God. He later said with conviction that no one chooses what they don’t want, or that every choice a person makes is what they *want* to choose. While I agree with this, it seems to contradict the earlier idea of limited freedom. The Garden of Eden story demonstrated man’s ability to choose for or against God’s good will, and doubles down on man’s freedom by saying that God had to put a flaming sword at the entrance to the garden to keep Adam and Eve out of it so they can’t get in and eat from the tree of life and live forever. They are limited, yes, but in terms of power, not free will. Why did God do this instead of simply limiting Adam and Eve’s free will to enter and eat from the tree of life? The point is we seem to have limited *power* over our environment, whether inside our body or outside. But this does not seem to limit our free will choices. Again I love RC Sproul and deeply respect him and his ministry, but I cannot seem to agree with him completely on this topic.

I used to go to John MacArthur's church when I was at UCLA and I remember watching RC Sproul's video series on the holiness of God. So amazing and so beautiful. I was crying during this video. What a gift of teaching RC Sproul was given. I think the primary problem that people have is accepting that human beings fall short of the glory of God's love. We think that we would have been good like Jesus Christ if only Adam had not eaten of the fruit in the garden. But of all human beings, only Jesus Christ is capable of perfect obedience to God as God alone is good. The rest of us can only be good with the help of the Holy Spirit dwelling within us once we have accepted Jesus Christ. If it were otherwise and human beings could be good independent of God's help through the work of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, why would God inflict us with evil? This is the fundamental contradiction that people see. They think that human beings can be good without God and that God, therefore, made us evil. If we take what the Bible says seriously and believe that God alone is good, a better understanding of God's plan is possible: ajourneyoffaith.ca/2020/09/23/the-plan-of-god/

What deep wisdom given to RC by the Most High...and what an excellent teaching and message that few even contemplate upon. Thank you Lord God Almighty for giving us wisdom and understanding and insight and comprehension, in Yahshua the Messiah and his free gift offered to those predestined to become Sons and Daughters of the Almighty God!

We make day to day choices. The irresistible Force does not choose to move all of us toward Him, and none of us have the ability to choose Him because we are dead in our sins. He chose some of us before the foundation of the world. He will return when He has gathered all the saints in His time.

A souveren Father that gives you free Choice between good and evil and is patient with you even if you rebel against him is truly a loving God, because he even provided a Solution for Salvation. Men are indeed free until their Clock is up. Then comes Judgement / Responsibility with Freedom and giving Account for your Works. That is true Freedom.

FEW people are able to relay the word of God as eloquently, naturally, and lovingly as RC. I truly feel God's love seeping through this man's voice. If you don't feel uplifted after listening to him I pray for you to seek out and form your relationship with God the way I am because we desperately need it

I suppose you can spend your whole life trying to figure this out. I'm certainly not smart enough. The only way I can somewhat make sense of it is to imagine it as a book or movie. The author has written the story and decided all that will happen. But within the story, the characters make their own decisions as well. It's not a perfect illustration. But it's the one that helps me stay sane when I start thinking about this. (Once again, it's amazing to see R.C. here and realize... he now knows / understands these things better than we ever can in this life!)

Can't explain it in this tiny space... but I 'got this answer'. And there are no restrictions to our freedom. God has NO FREEDOM - He has made promises that He CANNOT break. His 'power' is demonstrated in accordance with OUR 'obedience'.
