Noah’s Nakedness: Themes from Genesis with R.C. Sproul

When Adam and Eve sinned against God in the garden of Eden, they realized they were naked and were ashamed. Humanity’s sin has been exposed ever since, unable to be removed or hidden away. In this message, R.C. Sproul looks in Genesis 9 at an instance in the life of Noah that helps us understand the basis for our shame and the grace of Jesus Christ in covering our nakedness.

    I was blessed and encouraged in listening to this--and being reminded of something that happened when I was 17 years old. My father was dying of cancer. Within the routine of family members sitting at his bedside (this was in 1962 where there were NO niceties of either staff or equipment in small rural hospitals....), it was my turn to sit with him for 5-6 hours through the small hours of the night. At a certain point, I roused myself a bit to glance at him laying on the bed, now uncovered. He lay on his side, with his backside totally exposed to view. I immediately knew what I would do, quietly got up, walked across the room, gently covered him with the sheet. And I never told anyone about that. Ever. It blesses me today, now 79 years old, to be able to identify the honoring that I showed my dear daddy in those moments. It had meaning. It HAD meaning that I honored him. I'm so glad to have that understanding. And now I am so much closer to seeing him again--closer to seeing him again--not near as far as I am from the last time I saw him. Dear daddy---I'm coming home. Yes. I'm coming home.

    This is the essence of expository preaching and teaching; unfolding the inexhaustible riches of God's word verse by verse, and in so doing, fulfilling the apostolic mandate found in 2Timothy 2:16: "Be diligent to present yourself approved of God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth". Even though he has gone on to glory, sinners and saints alike, are still reaping the fruits of his labor in ministry for Jesus Christ. "Though he is dead, he still speaks" (Hebrews 11:4)

    Wonderful message! Thank you Ligonier for keeping RC's messages alive. *The first act of redemption, IMHO, was that the Lord God killed and skinned a couple of animals to cover up Adam and Eve's sin.* And then the Lord God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us, which covers our (my) sin. Praise be to God for His plan of redemption!

    God does not make plans. Men make plans and most of the time those plans get messed up. God has a purpose of salvation, not a plan. Rom 9:11-13: "For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. This may be nothing, but at 24:19, Dr Sproul mentions that we want God to overlook us and that we are looking for those proverbial "bushes" to cover us from the gaze of God. Then the burning bush popped into my mind. I've never gave the meaning of the burning bush much thought until that connection was made in my mind.

    I think Noah was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome because of the tragedy of the Flood. Perhaps Survivors Guilt is also a part of his mind set, in that the millions of people who died in the Flood, the lost of his own previous life and home, the total destruction of his previous society, having spent a year or more in an Ark at sea. Yes, he had much to be thankful for that he and his family survived with all the animals and believed in the Lord’s Word even more having seen the Lord’s prophecies come to pass. Then, to see the entire landscape to be totally changed and the overwhelming sense that he has to start all over again building a new life for himself and his family, after having spent a hundred years building the Ark and at his advanced age.

    This is amazing! I just want to know if there is a sermon from RC that explains why the curse fell on Canaan and not on Ham directly. And if it had to fall on his offspring, why did it have to be the last born and not the first born of Ham? This video just got posted right after I rivaled for hours on this topic until I gave up.

  • @jenkinsmatthew

    @jenkinsmatthew

    5 ай бұрын

    Perhaps Ham's firstborn had already received a blessing, so he could not than be cursed, but Canaan had not yet been blessed? This also somewhat explains why it had to be Ham's son, hot Ham himself. If Ham was cursed, then it would have been just him, but if Ham's son was cursed, that would carry on throughout generations. If Ham was cursed by Noah, it wouldn't seem to make much of a difference, because he doesn't seem to respect his father anyway, and Ham would still have his sons. By cursing Canaan for his father's (Ham's) actions, Canaan may grow up to resent his father (Ham), thus punishing him indirectly. Not sure if any of this is the objective truth, just some arguments that I've heard.

  • @mandla.christian

    @mandla.christian

    5 ай бұрын

    @jenkinsmatthew Well, it would not make much sense to me too for the curse to go directly to Ham. I do agree that it makes sense for it to go to his son. My problem is how the son was chosen. Ham had 4 sons, and Canaan seems to have been the last born. If the curse fell on the firstborn, that would make sense because of how firstborns were viewed by God and the Old Testament. But why skip all the older 3 and go to the last one? Is it because he was a favorite child like Joseph? It doesn't seem to hold up in that way. There's just that missing piece I'm trying to figure out. Also, if the firstborn had already been blessed, what about the other 2? If they were already blessed after being born, then why wasn't Canaan blessed yet? It's all still a mess in my head.

    Adam wields the fiery sword. Noah treads the winepress of wrath. Joshua... leads them into the promised land. Adam and Noah are clothed from the nakedness of the day of the Lord as the sacrifice of being made to be sin. In the same way, God always went about in a cloth tent. After a fiery judgment, the Column of fiery and Column of Cloud are created. The way of the Lord in the desert needs to be put into context with the previous passage: Sacrifice - Indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins. Resurrection - Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our God! (Isa 40:2-3 NABO) Just as it is appointed that human beings die - be judged - appear a second time, (so also Christ) Heb 9:27-28 …as the (Red) Dragon (Demon Sin) stood before the woman about to give birth, to devour her child when she gave birth. The entire reason: The only reason Jesus came into the world was to appease the wrath of the Father toward us so that we might be saved. Jesus came so that we would know him and the Father. He told us that it was God, his Father, who had sent him. Only this is eternal life (John 17:3). Jesus said “all that the Father has is his,” because God has placed all things into his Son’s hands (John 3:35), but it is God's power and spirit alone in Jesus that does all. Jesus said “the words that I speak to you, I speak not of myself, but the Father, which dwells in me, HE doeth the works” (John 14:10). God walks and lives in all who belongs to him (2 Corinthians 6:16). Jesus is not God.
