    We got to the bit with the toadlets when my husband paused the video and asked me to explain how their jumps differ from the Leiopelmatid frogs that I got to help study in college. I gave him a nice, long explanation, and then we hit play only to find that that exact Leiopelma study was where Ze Frank was going next (and of course he explained it so much better). Brachycephalus fully deserve their win here, but I'm glad that more of the world will get a laugh from our beloved belly flopping Leiopelma 😂

  • @QuantumWaltz

    @QuantumWaltz

    @@neuralmute From what I understand, it seems to be that bamboo is such a terrible nutrient source that their bodies can't sustain estrus for much longer than a short 24-hour period... once a year. And, being that estrus also makes female mammals crankier, it's entirely possible for the female to kick the male's ass before any babymaking gets to happen. And wild pandas refuse to eat anything BUT bamboo. Other bamboo-reliant carnivorans are either much smaller, or have a wider diet, or both. Giant pandas just made the behavioral jump from an omnivorous diet to bamboo-only WAY too quickly and recently for their evolution to effectively keep up. Panda breeding programs often feed them "panda cake," a specially-formulated nutrient bar (which the pandas go gonzo over, so they do find it quite delicious despite a severe bamboo habit) that gives them a much wider estrus cycle. It's still only a few days a year, but enough to conceive relatively reliably, at least.
