True crime special: Who murdered Marea Yann?

This Sky News Australia exclusive true crime documentary examines the shocking 20-year-old murder mystery relating to the brutal death of much-loved mother of three, Marea Yann from Healesville, Victoria.
Marea Yann was 69-years-old at the time she was murdered in her own home in September 2003.
As the years went by the case turned cold despite the fact a senior police member described the crime scene as one of the most “horrendous” he had ever seen.
In ‘Who Murdered Marea?’, investigative journalist Denham Hitchcock explores the crime with close family members and senior detectives, unveiling disturbing revelations that have never seen the light of day.

Because sometimes the refusal to answer provides as much information as an answer. Both police officers were very professional and did not want to do anything that could jeopardize the case but they gave you enough information if you think about it. One of the first things they made clear is that most homicides are committed by people the victim knows. There was only one suspect in the first investigation and they refused to say that he was no longer a suspect (because he still is the suspect). James had motive, he has no alibi, he had opportunity. And there is no evidence pointing to any other friend or family member and it's very unlikely a random stranger did it. Really, what more do they need to say?

Hiring a private investigator is better than facing danger, heartache or theft. Immigration should do a better job of vetting people to keep out sociopaths and psychopaths. He should have been deported for domestic violence and death threats once there was proof. Why are witch doctors threatening death allowed in the country? It's a privilege to be an immigrant in Australia. Immigration should deport people such as these, locking them up prior to a hearing and not to be allowed out where they can commit violence.

Gaye Inggs governments of the different countries in Africa claim they don't have the money to catch people who commit crimes like that. There is also a child market there. Children are stolen from their parents and sold to other people. They say if we want to stop it we have to pay them. Where I live people make a profit from arresting people and putting them in jail. The African government needs to learn how to do the same. Our prisons make a profit. They don't loose money.

You should watch 60 Minutes Australia. In that show, they feature murderers, pedophiles, serial killers, torturers and every manner of human depravity. Most of the criminals are white and born in Australia. Every race has murderers, pedophiles, serial killers and torturers and practitioners of human depravity. Racists just use such cases to prove their point: see, he's black. They have different values. Nope. Only the small-minded would think like this.

My point exactly. The fact that he's a murderer and a very dangerous man aside, the cultural differences here seem to be abysmal. No regard for the sanctity of marriage - the cheating hound had three different children with three different girlfriends WHILE HE WAS MARRIED TO PAULINE. That in itself is shocking and unacceptable by Western standards. The man should have been deported back to Nigeria where l imagine that sort of behaviour is accepted?🤷 And what is mother-in- law doing standing up for him and protecting him so extremely, even with the knowledge of his adulterous behaviour. Was she in complete denial, or such a goody-goody that she was soft in the head. Such very bad decisions made by an extremely naive group of people.

Agreed - it wasn't clear to me why so much evidence was withheld from the jury. I guess this programme had to be careful not to go into too much detail, and endanger imminent new proceedings against the same murder defendant. His guilt is clear - it's crucial nothing happens to jeopardise another prosecution. This man is incredibly dangerous - I'm only surprised he hasn't killed again in the last 20 years he's enjoyed undeserved freedom in Australia. And yes, Marea desperately needed legal protection from her son-in-law. He was stalking and harassing her, and had made threats to kill her. He knew where she lived, and that she lived alone there, she was a sitting target. If I were a close relative or friend, I'd have urged her to move in with me for a while. Why didn't her children encourage her to seek a restraining order, banning him from contacting her or coming within a mile of her home? She was clearly very vulnerable! Her daughter Pauline is a disgrace, supporting her ex husband and denying he murdered her mother. She clearly cannot handle the guilt! I suspect she has children with that murdering scumbag - and perhaps remains afraid of him, having had to maintain contact over their kids. Very sad she shows such disloyalty to her mother - and such casual disregard for the safety of ALL women while he walks free!

It was very difficult to remain more or less serious throughout the whole episode. There is a "slight" difference between a German marrying an Italian woman and an Aussie one marrying an African, a Kozak, a Saudi or Peruvian, a North Korean etc. The important cultural gap might cause every now and then unpleasant situations. One better keeps that in the back of one's mind, before making a United Nations on a micro level. It's already difficult enough to make it work all the time between two people from a relatively common background...

Thank God the stupid double jeopardy rule has now been abolished - may justice finally prevail for this beloved woman. And may people learn a lesson from this and other murders by narcissistic abusers. Their MO is always only too predictable - they target giving empaths like Marea and play the victim to take, take, take. They will bleed you dry if you let them - and sometimes, literally bleed you dry, as happened in this case with the victim's murder. The Cycle of Narcissistic Abuse should be on school curriculums, so kids grow up knowing the red flags to look out for in these dangerous individuals.

Yes, that is exactly what happened, the brother danced around the subject. Lastly, they were so worried about the mother, sister, coworker, friend, that they did...what? What did they do? The only thing I can say about the daughter is she is either still fearful about him, she's embarrassed, or she's a piece of crap. They should have released that piano playing friend on him, she is scary as hell. I don't like my mother but she lives with us because where she did live became dangerous. It's refreshing to see how much this family loved their mother. ( sarcasm) . The Nigerian is a vile human being and the family has to live with the fact that everyone knew it....and did what??? I allowed a person to live with us who I thought had mild mental health issues, depression, anxiety etc. However it became an absolute nightmare, putting her medication into my coffee, CLR, an other time and lord knows what I haven’t discovered yet. Destroyed so many of our belongings. It was dreadful. Be careful who you invite into your inner life. It can be very dangerous.

the Australian legal system sounds wack...clearly the family had totally relevant information that should have been heard by the jury. And hard to say but the mother clearly had a bit of a screw loose to be so blindly trusting during her life. End result is sad.

@@JohnSmith-tx1hfThis. Many people in this thread are trying to deny that this man displays traits that are typical of a lot of African men, calling it racist to suggest this about him. I say BS. Cultural differences are HARD FACTS, and people should beware of who they bring into their families to be intimate with them. These Australian people were trusting and naive to a foolish degree, IMO

I don't believe in it myself. I'm married to a man from a different European country than my own and have spent my entire life coming to terms with it. Most of the time it's good, but we have had some terrible rows over silly cultural differences, and both of us have stubbornly defended our own customs. We're still married and have grown close now. My three children have grown up in my husband's country and consider themselves to be from there. They have partners from the same culture and l'm happy for them. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be tied down to somebody from a completely different ethnicity with a completely different world view, and who was cheating on me to boot, in the most egregious way, having children out of wedlock with other women. Too much to take in. And finally murdering my mother after stalking & harassing her and pulling a knife on my brother - absolute madness.

@@Faristol7 I agree 100%. I have observed that generally where such relationships are successful one of the partners has conformed to the cultural customs of the other and suppressed their own cultural customs. Must be very difficult, and that's even with the same skin colour and basic religion, for example an English-French couple. Also very confusing for the children when torn between which cultural custom to adopt, mother's or father's.

This is what happens when people look at race before much more important factors, such as content of character, social class, and the importance of homogeneity. No matter what those say who worship it, diversity is not always a good thing.

After criticizing the few on dark continent, maybe those that have the first hand knowledge, should be believed. This is soo tragic. How in heavens name could the daughter even entertain such a relationship. Terribly sad. Who else would murder for zilch? It’s him the low life criminal.
