Trudeau, Poilievre spar over carbon pricing exemption as topic heats up Parliament

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the leader of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre on Tuesday debated the government's exemption on carbon pricing for home heating oil, which was announced last week by Trudeau.
Despite arguments by premiers and the federal opposition that the pause on a price on carbon for home heating oil primarily benefits those living in Atlantic provinces, Trudeau said Tuesday that it is "used right across the country."
"It [home heating oil] is dirtier, more emitting than natural gas," Trudeau said, adding that the carve-out was meant to speed up the transition away from home heating oil.
"He admits that he's keeping the tax on cleaner and lower-emitting natural gas," Poilievre said.
"The price on pollution applied to natural gas does put more money back in the pockets of eight out of ten Canadians across the country," Trudeau argued.

And you think Conservatives are going to change that? They had 10 years in power and failed to deliver on affordability - 800,000 affordable homes were lost - the price of housing went up 60%. Poilievre pretends to care about Canadians struggling with the housing and affordability crisis - and yet voted 3X against building affordable & low income housing, voted 2X against raising minimum wages, and voted against dental care for kids from low income families - when he's had taxpayer funded dental care for *19+ years!* You're denying the economic threat that climate change poses. you think you can ignore the climate crisis and everything will work out fine? the most powerful financial institutions on the planet, the world's central banks, have warned that without urgent action to reduce fossil fuel CO2 emissions - climate change is going to trigger a global financial crisis that will render them "powerless." @@Anubis96699 The reality is - 13 US states have adopted carbon pricing policies either as part of a regional initiative or on their own. A price on carbon pollution works! And the largest ever study on carbon pricing proves it! The study looked at 142 countries over 20 years (43 of which had some form of carbon pricing) and the results show that countries with carbon prices on average have annual CO2 emissions growth rates that are lower than countries without a carbon price! A price on carbon pollution is just one tool in the climate toolbox and is an important part of any credible broader climate strategy. Conservatives need to be honest and admit that they couldn't care less about fighting climate change and couldn't care less about protecting our children's futures.

Thanks capitalism, through its toxic incentive structure to maximize profit for selfish gains, for squashing, suppressing and hiding real technological green, renewable alternatives that have been invented and could provide the world with an abundance of free energy. See how free energy is against the capitalist ethic? How can the capitalist economy function if people can easily access free energy without paying? It's like how capitalism hasn't figured out how to fully monetize fresh air. They have in some situations, in polluted cities, in fancy nightclubs or whatever. But they haven't quite got there. They have figured out how to make boatloads of profits from WATER, fresh water. Even just filtered water they are selling for profit. It's about time we looked seriously at the system and how to change it. "A Viable Society" by Peter Joseph is a good outline.

Such as Danielle Smith banning renewable energy projects, costing the province over $11B in renewable investments. Or like Scott Moe in Saskatchewan who says the province is going to continue using coal well toward and pass the 2030 goals of carbon reduction. Atlantic Canada cares about renewables, the conservative governments of Sask and Alberta do not. And also, Atlantic Canada uses the smallest amount of natural gas in Canada. Pierre Poilievre, Scott Moe and Danielle Smith care only about retaining investment from oil and gas CEOs, that's all it is about, oil and gas companies are conservatives largest donors.

It doesn't make sense to take the carbon tax off of the dirtiest wat to heat our home. If you are going to tax heating, they should be charged double but get a discount once they switch to electricity or natural gas. Heating is a necessity in Canada therefor shouldn't be taxed at all!

The tax has nothing to do with carbon and everything to do with the fact that without it, Canada can't pay interest on its loans. If that happens credit ratings go down and we owe even more. All these environment taxes are about barely keeping the country afloat. It doesn't matter if Pierre wins. If anything, he might tell the truth, but that will likely cause a bank run and speed up the inevitable collapse.

Dude, the countries deficit is no larger than it was most years under harper. And the main reason it exists this year is that the provinces demanded more health money and infrastructure. Its VERY likely that this year there will be no deficit at all, even with the increased transfers. Its 'fairly' likely thats why Trudeau is hanging on, because if he can brag in the spring that theres a federal surplus, thats a pretty huge feather in his cap. Either way, the notion that the finances are that bad is garbage. The country is nowhere near 'not paying its interest'.
