Truck Camping in Cold Weather | Staying warm tips & tricks

Ойын-сауық

I will show you what types of heat sources I use to keep my truck shell warm in cold weather and how I stay warm sleeping.
Note: The "Propane/Butane mix" gas canisters I mention can be refilled with "Butane" using the proper adapter.

    Another suggestion: If you're having a campfire in the evening, find a large rock (about the size of your head) and put it in the fire. When you're going to bed, use two sticks to lift the rock out of the fire and place it in a frying pan. Take the frying pan into your tent or truck and place the two sticks underneath it to prevent the heat of the rock from burning anything.

    I use an enclosed candle holder. It holds up to three lit candles. It keeps my truck cap toasty warm down to zero degrees. Also, I have three quarter inch styrofoam in the walls, floor, and ceiling. I went winter camping with friends in Yellowstone one winter. They froze in a tent and were amazed each time I cracked the window and they felt the blast of warm air. Insulation is the key to success! I would be afraid to use any type of fuel. A childhood friend died a few years back from carbon monoxide poisoning.

    Terrible tragedy about your friend. The dangers of a fuel heater really gets in my head and worries me too much to sleep while using one. I haven't tried the candle heater but wondered how well it might work. I don't have much insulation but the candle heater may be something I will try. Great Yellowstone story - Thanks!

    Hey Keith, great video about a topic I myself have thought a lot about. Although not an expert, I have some modifications/additional ideas I’d like to share. I get the bulk packs of the chemical hand warmers whenever they come up on sale, then I wrap a foot-long length of wide blue painter’s tape around the wrapper. When getting ready for bed, I remove the tape, unwrap and activate the hand warmer then tape 2 on either side of my lower back, one behind my neck and one over my heart. I find this keeps me warm all night. I like the Coleman camping heater and will look for it on eBay. Just like the adaptor you have to fill the green propane tanks from larger tanks, there now exists a similar adaptor to fill those iso-butane backpacking canisters. You buy the butane cans from Big-5 (or in bulk at Sam’’s)

  • @geenote

    @geenote

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's a great idea with the hand warmers! Someone else in the comments mentioned the adapter to refill the iso-butane canisters. I assumed they couldn't be refilled because it is a mix of propane and butane. So thanks to good people like you I now know I can refill with straight butane and work fine on my camping stove and heater. I purchased the adapter from Amazon but haven't tried it yet. Thanks so much for the tips and suggestions!

    Another way to keep warm with the Chemical hand warmers is to put them in your socks. Layer two to three pairs of socks and put the hand warmer just inside the outer pair.(Let me explain: chemical hand wamers can get a little hot right next to the skin, so you don't want it touching the skin (especially if you are sleeping) and So one to two pairs of socks keep them from touching the skin and the outter layer of socks just keeps the chemical hand warmers in place, next to your toes all night long. Most of the time backpacking, an extra pair of socks is worth the weight!). I have also done this with gloves as well.I know a lot of people are different, but for me the keeping warm enough to sleep well, the problem was keeping the fingers and toes warm. i also highly recommend a small sheet or coat tented over your head. (This keeps warm exhaled air, near you, but it can be helpful to have a piece of string to tie it up to the tent so that it does not touch your face.

    I enjoyed your informative video and friendly manner. I have used the Mr. Heater Little Buddy for years and agree that even the low setting is a little too hot. You can press down and reduce the flame a tad to get slightly less heat before it starts to flicker and go out. If theemre is not enough gas flow it goes out it just stops like it usually does, gas does not flow, but try at your own risk! I ran it like that for years with no problems. Another thing you could try would be to try running it on the pilot flame only. It emits heat like a candle but without the smoke or odor of a candle and a good bit of heat is emanated but it may or may not be enough but it will allow you to get a lot longer use out of a canister.

    Running the Mr. Heater in pilot light only mode is a great idea. I used that in a small slide in truck camper, and found it gave me 20 degrees warmer than the outside temperature. For me, that was enough to take the edge off the cold. I ran it at night while sleeping (I had a carbon monoxide alarm) but with as drafty as the camper was I knew I had air movement. Sometimes, I left a window cracked to get rid of humidity. The main concern could be rolling over in the middle of the night and having a blanket fall down next to or into the flame so positioning it to avoid that threat was critical.

    As far as actual car-camping outside of a campsite are concerned, the low-tech things like the hot water bottle and heat pad are really the only viable options. Pretty much anything with a canister has the realistic potential to kill you in your sleep or at least leave moisture or frost on the inside of your vehicle. And most of us aren't carrying generators around. And for those who are curious, you really can't plug a heater into a Jackery. I've got that small heater. It requires too much juice at 1500W. The biggest Jackery is 2000W. It tripped my 240 in about 3 seconds. I'd assume that it would likely drain that 2000, optimistically, after 80 minutes? I'm not sure. The math can get a little janky when you're talking about electricity. But if a person is building a fire, there is some potential to throw together a fairly safe and efficient heating unit that employs hot stones. I may have to effort on that.

    Regarding the 12 volt heating pad, excellent idea. I bought a 12v car seat heating pad & use it to heat my bed. Mine has 3 heat settings & I can run it off my battery pack or my cigarette lighter. I also put reflectix under my bedding on top of my mattress. Not the cheapest option but I already had the scrap pieces available. You can get it from places like "Grainger". Worthless info as far as I am concerned, but for the general city people it could be of some value

    You can get an adapter to attach the 1 pound propane tanks to the Coleman tent heater (isobutane cartridges). Test it first, but should power that heater well and be much cheaper since you refill your bottles.

    I had the same idea and tried it. It would not light very easy then after I finally got it to light, it didn't seem to burn very good and had bad fumes. I'm not sure why it didn't work very good and was afraid to use it that way. Thanks for the suggestion.

    @@geenote Good to hear about. I don't know much about the difference requirements of propane burners versus isobutane burners, etc. Sounds as if the Coleman heater isn't able to deal with propane. Too bad.
