Seeing lots of guys here criticizing this and that on the conversion of this truck. This is not a high budget build. So lots of things are done differently. This is a low cost used truck, using many repurposed components at significantly less than new prices to create an affordable asset to do it’s needed job. Many are saying this truck is not speced properly for dump truck work. Frame to weak, axles to light duty, and so on. Before conversion, this truck probably had a tractor GVW of 46,000 lbs 12000 front, 34,000 drives. Axles were probably rated at 40,000 lbs. total truck factory GVW to 54,000 to 56000 lbs. GVW primarily limited by DOT highway rules verses actual truck capability and capacity. Depending on capacity of of drop axle, (let’s say a 9,000 lb capacity) that brings GVW up to about 55,000 lbs. depending on front axle, spring and tire/wheel capacity upgrades, can go from 12,000 to a 20,000 capacity. So that would bring total GVW up to around 63,000 lbs. that is still within the design parameters of the on road truck. In my mind, as long as you stay within those limitations, this truck will probably do ok. In highway use with a trailer, these trucks can be permitted and often are to weights of over 100,000 lbs. However, I do raise my eyebrows at welding the dump box pieces to the rear of the frame because the welding on the frame messes up the heat treatment of the frame rails and could cause future issues. But I am not an expert in this area. If he is going to be crawling around in the mud and other hard core off road stuff, this truck probably would not be up to the job, but if primarily used on improved surfaces, it should do ok. This is a case of good enough. Not what’s the best top shelf piece. Air ride suspensions are becoming more common on construction vehicles. They have there advantages and disadvantages. Those guys complaining about the paint work? So what. It’s a work truck, it’s going to get very dirty, dented and scratched in short order. The orange peal and less than expensive perfect surface preparation becomes a non issue. The customer gets a truck with some years of life left at an affordable price. If routine maintenance is performed and it is mechanically kept in good repair, and operated within its limits, it should be as safe and reliable as most other vocational vehicles out there.

TowME trailers We built trucks just like that for almost 20 years and there's 1000s of other people that do the same and we never ever ever EVER had any issues with axles, suspension, and frames breaking. Only way I can see that happening is if you're offroading 90% of the time, although this ain't and for the client we built it for all he's doing is hauling asphalt and gravel to driveways . Besides what do you expect for under $40,000 ?

As someone who drives tri axle dumps the past 30 years I just be a little concerned about the structural Integrity of it. But a nice build anyways

Hi Thats a nice looking truck , and built to a budget to do a job for somebody. If the guy that got this one wanted a $250.000 fancy heavy duty truck like others commented he wouldn't of brought this one would he. The only downside to the video is I came to watch guys build a truck not those 2 go at it. I was interested in how you did the frames and stuff , but basically got more of those 2 wasting time somebody paid them for.. I farm and do mechanical/ some fabrication here in my shop, but enjoy watching what others are building here on KZread. Thanks for posting and I'm gonna watch some more of your stuff, when I'm not so busy on cold days here in MB Canada during the winter.

I wouldn’t drive a tandem or a tri axle without a back window.. really helps out when you’re dumping concrete chunks or mud so you don’t tip over

Correct me if Im wrong here but a lot of guys are bashing the air ride and the cheesy light weight rear ends. But this Pete hauled that kind of weight before as a highway tractor. Yeah theirs a lot more twisting and crap and double frame would be nice but to fix the air ride just dump the dang air bags before you dump the load. Around here every one uses air ride dumps on single frame highway tractors. Works real well. The big issue is getting the load centred so the truck doesn't hang to one side. Easy fix is to add a second air ride levelling valve on the other side. Works wonders. I've hauled gravel and rock in that configuration many times. As long as you use common sense this truck would last years.

Man you guys do a great job. I notice a lot of guys in California are getting 18 wheelers and having them converted to dump trucks. Makes wonder if this cheaper or not.

I have cut 100's of frames over my life time. I cut the middle where you have a cross member. That way the frame won't flex where the weld is. The cross member bolts on each side of the weld. I would double the frame from under the cab back to the rear spring hanger. Your bed cyl. when lifting has over half the load in one place. That's a lot of weight in one place. This truck will tear out a lot of power dividers

I would rather have watched that girl sand down the whole truck than watch Boomhauer & Bill Dautreive spend 30 minutes on a 4 bolt job putting those steps on. In fact... I don't care if the video has a beginning, middle or end. just put up 1/2 hour of her using a palm sander and you'll probably have a viral video on you hands!

Fuel tank steps need insulators to stop rubbing holes in fuel tank....I’ve got one that did it....looks nice..

Will the metal cover panel for the old sleeper opening be covered with padding or some sort of interior covering? Seems like it would be cold in the winter with bare metal.

Seems like a light frame, I wouldn’t put more than 15 ton in that truck, especially after cutting an welding it. Trucks like that running 73280 have heavy spec single frame or double frame. The exterior turned out good but just doesn’t seem strong enough.

I have been driving tri axle dumps for over 15yrs doing mostly road construction for the state most of the time and pretty much every one of these conversion kits from standard road tractors to tri axle dumps usually end up being money puts with nothing but problems bc they don't have doubled frame light weight axles and air ride suspension on tri axle dumps is never a good idea air cab great but not suspension I would guess that truck prob had a 12 - 14k front end I personally will not buy a dump unless has 18-20k front axle with 40-46k rears with either a Hendricks spring or Chalmers suspension in rear air ride rear suspension on tri axle dumps they are always blowing out air bags they just are not designed to handle that kind of weigh twisting and turning on them but I do have to give credit where credit is due you boys did an amazing job with the conversion turned out to be a very sharp rock hauler

Ran a single framed tri-axle for years. It could haul 26 tons , and that extra 2 ton's. Made the truck a money maker. Thought to start out with, the single frame. Would not work. But it turned out better then I thought. Tn we were allowed 74,000 lbs on a Tri-axle. I know with other drivers. That single frame and lite-weight axles. Would have not have held up. But I ran the wheels off it, and made good $$ with it.

Pete kildow was it a complete air ride system underneath it every dump conversion I've seen with air ride suspension is a nightmare to keep under control when loaded but we haul 82,500 lbs in Alabama

Sorry no spring's. Should have put that, it was only a single frame low weight truck. I did run one air ride tri axle. And staying at 74000 lbs here in Tn. It did good, but sure make the pucker factor increase. Until you got used to the air ride on it. I was sure the truck was turning over all the time. Are you running a Quad or Tri axle to haul the 82,500 in Al? Seeing a lot more Quads here. But there so heavy, and limited to 80,000 lbs. That most low weight Tri-Axles can haul as much or more weight. But the Quad works out better on the Bridge law for those Quads on the Interstates.

did you use the stoc rear suspension

If you put a 17 n a half or 18 foot box on some you may sell a few in NYS! Shortening the wheel base hurts the bridge calculation up here!

I'll be installing my first frameless dump body shortly. Are all your hinge plates the same dimensions? If so, could you send me some specs please?

The first thing I do in s build is to pressure wash what I am working on. I know these guys are experts , l’m not, but a little engine wash and pressure would make those rails and engine look great. It’s cheap and really cleans up the look. One big question, why paint first before doing all the heavy cutting and welding? Looks like the build process is bass ackwards. But I am not the expert, it’s just the way I build vehicles.

Is it that had to find a day cab around there? Plenty of them running around here and most already heavy speced. That would have been a better start than a sleeper road truck.

what weight are your 2 drive axles as in the uk on 3 axles we can top pot at 24 tons on iron springs

What do you do with the old sleepers and tanks, could use a few of the parts

Aside from the obvious short comings of converting an ex hi way truck to construction for me the first thing I noticed is unless you are in a very warm climate would you not think some insulation should be in order for that back wall ?? Certainly help the air conditioner in hot weather also.

Looks nice, but unfortunately that's about it. Like many have stated here, the back end and front end are not rated for the type of truck that you have converted it into, and it's not doubled framed, really bad paint job ( orange peal effect ), and the list goes on,... esthetics don't really matter but safety does. You stated you did your best with what you have and I understand that and that you did your best however the truck is not safe to carry really heavy loads because it simply wasn't designed for that purpose, even after all the modification you have done it's still not done correctly. With all due respect, this is backyard mechanics way of doing things and the vehicle should not be allowed to be on the road before getting certified that it is safe in it's current condition by a highly qualified person that understands frame structures, stress loads, etc, not some clown at the DOT. P.S: your NEVER suppose to weld anything to the frame !! bolted yes, welded NO !! (there is even a sticker on the frame telling you this) But what do I know right,... I've only been a mechanic for the past 30 years (retired now) and have extensive background in this type of work, seriously, no BS. This is not meant as a bashing of your video, I just wanted to point out that there are flaws that are serious in this build that could turn out to be very dangerous and even fatal to the operator and others on the road. This truck should have been left as a hauler, not a dump truck.

With regards to the paint job, I expected it to be shitty orange peel when I saw that they painted it right in the grimy shop. No painter worth his salt would do that.

I love these conversion videos.....except!!!....Please Get A Tripod or have someone who knows how to use a video camera to do these. WAIT....are you on a boat while videoing this? I'm getting seasick. Big waves coming in... rockin' back and forth...left to right...

I don't have a camera or tripod I just use my smartphone and selfie stick . I don't think they're that bad when it comes to stabilization

next time there is sanding and banging.. you might want to invest in some hearing protection for employees. that was way loud. .

In the northeast the pete or kw dealers wont spec single frames for dumps. Even the heave spec single frame. Pete had to take back 6 trucks from one paving company cause frames were cracking, and twisting when they go to dump into paver with 23-24 ton on. Complete junk! They didn't last a yr

Depending on what state and weight laws for tri-axles single frame aint gonna last it will twist and flex to failure.I owed them for 14 yrs in pa and know well enough how they should be speced out.

It looks nice but it's really under speced for what it's probably going to asked to do. Plus I personally find the fact that you 1) didn't take the time to clean and detail the frame and motor objectionable plus the fact that you didn't do anything to finish off the insert to close off the back of the cab. It's really going to be loud and temperature sensitive with no insolation there That being said, depending on the sale price I suppose you can make anything work if you have to. I do agree with the gentleman that suspects it's going to eat the new owner alive with maintenance issues.

Randy Purtteman First and foremost ITS NOT A BRAND NEW TRUCK! You're awfully particular pal. Secondly we built trucks like that for our own construction company and had absolutely NO ISSUES with frame and axles/suspension. I ain't saying that we're professionals but for what we got to work with I believe that we do a pretty good job.

Friend of ours has got a double-channeled frame to start with. Nothing less than double-channeled. Former log-hauler. Canadian-spaced Hendrickson 48k rears and 28k up front. That truck looks nice but dare not take it off the paved road unless you're hauling Styrofoam.
