Troy SAR - Straight Pull AR

Our first look at the Troy Side Action Rifle. This is a compact varmint rifle that is very light at 6lbs and has a folding stock. It is compliant in all 50 states because it is technically a bolt action. I am still trying to work out some hand loads for it and I will be updating my review when we get a good load dialed in.

Nice. I always wanted a bolt action upper for an AR15. No gas system, just a charging handle on the side. Good video Chuckin'

When I built my 300HAMR AR I used a Bear Creek side charge upper. It became obvious that I didn't really need it to be semiauto so I blocked the gas port and use it as straight pull. Without the wasted gas I get higher MV and smaller SD's. I shoot left so my gun hand stays on the grip and it's a quick move to slap the bolt back and let the reduced power buffer spring push it back into battery. It was also much cheap to build than buying the Troy. The round that *really* needs this is .22wrm.

I did the same, got me an 18" BC barrel and a side charging handle upper, blocked the gas port permanently and left the rest of the rifle standard, with only an easy extract special bolt that has diagonal cuts on the front, which made the extraction so much easier. Shoots like a Swiss clock and extremely accurate. Cost was less than half the price of Troy SAR. I made a full wood stock non collapsing/folding for it and it looks like a classic retro rifle.

Straight pull rifles are common in the EU. Browning has a full line of straight pull rifles for the European market. You need to watch a driven boar hunt in an Eastern European country. Those men are experts at shooting game that's on a full run. The straight pull helps them quickly reload. Ha! We use bait and hunt from a ground or elevated blind while resting the rifle on the window.

I have been working on a 77gr TMK load and I am getting right around 2500fps in this 16" barrel. The data says 2500fps for a 20" gas ported barrel with the same charge. So It may have something to do with it.

Here in Aus, that is the best we can get, straight pulls and pumps. That said, they need to be made here. Look up Warwick Firearms and Oceania Precision. Two fine Aussie companies doing their bit:D

Troy makes these with a buffer tube if you don't want the folding stock. They also make a very similar version of this one but it's pump action. Pretty much everything is takes AR parts except for the actual upper and lower themselves. I may be looking to convert this to a 6.5 Grendel which would require a barrel and bolt face change. I'm not 100% sure if that is possible yet. I plan on emailing Troy about it to see what they say.

I’m surprised the fast twist barrel doesn’t like light bullets. I have a heavy barreled Stag in 223 with a 1-7 twist a so far it’s shot best with 50 and 52 gr bullets. Actually, it shot really well with Fiocci 40gr vmax factory loads. So well that I bought a box of them for it and I never buy factory rounds...

  • @ChuckinTV

Typically a fast twist does better with heavy for caliber bullets. At least on paper that is supposed to be the case. Maybe I'll load up some 53gr Noslers and just see what they do. Can't hurt I suppose. The 60gr and 77gr Sierra TMKs are showing some pretty good potential from what I've been testing off camera so far. I was actually surprised at how well the Frontier 55gr Match shot. Unfortunately I don't have more of those to confirm that though. And the availability of 223/5.56 is pretty dismal right now

@@ChuckinTV I think it’s more accurate to say a heavy bullet typically does better with a fast twist bullet. :-) I tried some heavies in that gun and was less than impressed. Those 40gr Fiocci loads and 52gr Sierra hpbt on the other hand were really impressive!
